‘When is

something goingto happen?’

“We are still waiting for response a from

President J acob Zuma’s office, they said on

Monday a letter was posted, but we have

not received anything.

We are also waiting for the National

Council of Provinces. We handed our

concerns to them in black and white when

they visited the ar ea earlier this year at

their big tent in Praktiseer. Since then,

nothing. The war d committ ee does not

actua lly function, we never see our ward

councillor, and we are wa itng for the

Greater Tubatse Municipality, nothing ishapp ening. We are wait ing for everybody.

Nobody makes a move, we have no wat er,

the electrical pump is broken. Only the

rich people can afford electrical

connections.

Look at t his place, the RDP housing

project stands abandoned. People want to

build their own houses on the stands where

the toilets are erected. The Governmen t

said th ey will come back to us. They did

not. What mus t we do?”

This is the question Mr Joseph Maboi

and Fra nk Seerane (right an d left at t he

dry water point on the bottom photograph

respectively) wrestles with every day.

Their village, Malaneng, are next to

Mapar eng village accros trhe river as you

turn from th e Ohrigstad road to Graskop.

Mr Maboi is the chairman of thecommunity committee tha t tr y to better the

villagers’ plight.

“We invited you h ere becaus e people

delegation from this village recently

tra velled to the Un ion Buildings together

with a delegation from Mapareng to bring

attention to their plight to the President.

Ready forthe future

Not too lavish, but quite comforta ble will be

the most accurate description for the new

counci l chamber of the Greater Tubatse

Municipality in the building up on the h ill in

Burgersfort.Tuesday sa w the first council meeting in

the new building. Un fortu nat ely the Mayor

and Acting Municipal Manager could not

att end becaus e of other commitment s. The

first thing that literally struck visitors, was

the cold ai r f rom the very ef fect ive ai r

conditioning.

The (figuratively) hot seats a re ra ised and

every councillor ha s a comforta ble high-back

chair. The sound system seems to be state-

of - the-ar t and everybody (Counci l lors,

bottom left an d visitors, above) stood quiet

and on attent ion while a decent instru menta l

version of the national anthem played over

the loudspeaker s before proceedings sta rted.

Councillors struggled a bit with theirmicrophones, but should be us ed to it soon.

The public gallery is on the sma llish side,

but also comfortable.

Unfortunately everything was still very

new, and officials were clearly not really

geared for the media. Platinum Gazette left

with a p romise from officials th at n ext time

everything will be running smooth.

Given the standard of the new building,

bad decisions can for sur e not be blamed on

the conditions...

4  NEWS 8 OCTOBER 2010

Tensions flareAnd so the leader of the ANC Youth

League, Mr Julius Malema, visited

Maandagshoek last week Saturday.

His visit generat ed quite a lot of

interest from the local commu nity, whule a

large number of the audience was also

bused to the venu e from other r egions inLimpopo. Par t of the au dience were also

prominent local politicians, a num ber of

them a ttending in their individual

capacities, to come and hear what t he

Youth league leader had to say.

As promised by the posters of the

meeting, he made quite an emotional case

for th e nat ionalisation of mines. While part

of the programme was a lso the handing

over of memorandums to representatives of

foreign minin g compan ies, most of the ra lly

was spen t a s a goold old fash ioned political

rally.

But, the National Union of

Mineworkers was not so impressed with

Mr Malema. After the meeting they issues

the following statement:

The National Union of Mineworkers

(NUM) is highly pertubed by theuttera nces attr ibuted to the ANC Youth

League President in saying that “ ...mines

that are not cooperative to the

nationalisation concept will have their

operations disrupted...” Not only does the

NUM finds the utteran ces unacceptable,

but such reckless utterances threat en the

livelihoods an d secur ity of jobs of the over

400 000 mineworkers employed in the

industry. The NUM remains stea dfast

that nothing about the mineworkers it

represents will be done without th eir

involvement. Whilst the NU M supports

state intervention in stra tegic sectors of

the economy in order to alleviate direpoverty within the populace, we refuse to

be blackmailed, indoctrinated a nd

manipulated by juveniles.

We strongly support t he Nat ional

Genera l Coun cil ‘s resolution th at pr oper

research be done on the n ationalisation

concept and that such findings be

presented t o the ANC ‘s Na tional

conference in 2012. We however call on

the ANC to provide the much needed

leadership and to reign in on its youth

wing to ensure that in the process serious

damage is not done to the reputa tion of

the country an d image of the South

African mining industry in the face of the

investor community. such ut terances

create unnecessary tension and

uncertainty amongst workers.

As far a s th e NUM is concerned, nomining operation will be disrupted by

anybody and we call on th ose who want to

disrupt operations to come forward and do

so.”

As could be predicted, this Cosatu

Union’s view resulted in m ore verbal

fights dur ing the week, but had died down

by the t ime of going to press .

Platinum Austr alia Limited has announced that the perman ent connection

of the Smokey Hills Mine to the national power grid was completein

September.

The entire operation, including the pr ocessing plant an d undergroundmine have been operating on only grid power since without incident.

The completion of the permanent connection to the grid has allowed

Smokey Hills to cease ru nning t he diesel generators which ha ve been

supplying approximately half of the power requirements of the operation

since start up. This will result in a net saving of approximately $0.5 million

per month and will also provide a more reliable power source.

The operation will however retain its sta ndby diesel generators to provide

back up in t he event of any issues in t he future with the supply of power

from th e nat ional grid.

10  NEWS 8 OCTOBER 2010

Is racism still a big problem inRacism in South Africa came under the

spotlight this week when prof Johanthan

Ja nsen of the University of the Free Sta te,

and Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe

s p o k e a b o u t t h e i s s u e a t t h e A h m e d

Kathrada F oundation in Johannesburg.

Both men were worried about poor progress

to bring unity to a country filled with ma nyraces an d colours.

It was said that unity was achieved for a

sma ll period of time dur ing th e Soccer World

C u p , b u t i t q u i c k l y d e r a i l e d a g a i n

afterwards.

Prof. Jansen feels that especially young,

whi te South Afr icans have an angered

att itude and messages such as “only black

candidates m ay apply” or “it is only a ma tter

of time before your farm s will be repossessed

and given to previously disadvantaged

people” is fuel for t his a nger.

In his opinion racial ten sion in South Africa

is like a vulcano that could errupt at any

time.

Deputy President Motlanthe also feels

strongly about the youth. He believes that

the focus for a n on-racial society should be

instilled from young and the youth mustgrow up with ideals of unity.

In Cap e Town Archbishop Thabo Makgoba

of the Anglican church this week said that

people should not forget about the wounds

inflicted to especially white men who were

forced to fight for apartheid. He feels that

t h i s i s a n i s s u e t h a t n e e d s c a r e f u l

c o n v e r s a t i o n t o b r i n g h e a l i n g a n d

understanding of the effect apartheid had

on both wh ite and black.

We asked readers if they feel racism and

racial tension is a problem in our a rea. They

also told us why they felt this way and wha t

can be done to bring unity.

Me.

Mr Lennox Mphogo said: “No, I don’tthink racism is a problem in our area.Apartheid is over and we can all do thesame things with all kinds of people”.

Mnr. Bertus Verdoes sê: “Ja, hier is nogbaie rassisme. Ek glo nie dit kan regkomnie”.

Ms. Thembi Motau said: “No, even ifpeople speak different languages theywon’t point fingers and let arguments getout of control. I’ve never experienced ‘youblacks’ or ‘you whites’”.

Mr Tshepo Mashile said: “No, mostly weall interact and work together with no fuzzlike during apartheid”.

Mr Patrick Mandi said: “Yes, there istention, but colour does not matter, itmatters from where you come. People callus from other areas in the country‘incomers’ and other names. I find thatblack people are the most racist of all”.With him is his daughter Buhle Mandi.

Me. Charmaine Maré sê daar is nog rassisme en mense moet mekaar beter in agneem. Mnr. Gerhard Maré sê: “Nee, ek dink weer dis nie so erg nie. Ons almal werksaam en dinge is al baie beter as wat dit voorheen was”.

Me.

Ms Singret Letsoalo said: “It is not thatmuch of a problem. We all help eachother and we all queue together in shopsetc.”.

our area? What do you think?

Mnr.

Mr Adam Tjale said: “Ja , there is a lot ofracism. It goes into judging people.Whites feel undermined when blacks areempowered and especially in some caseswhere the black person do not deservethe position, the whites start to bear agrudge”.

Ms Mpho Tlagadi said: “The racial issueis not a problem here. We are all differentpeople from different places who camewith one vision to this area - to work. Weall just click”.

Mr Given Mokgothu said: “In Burgersfortthere is no problem. We accept that weare different but living together in onecountry”.

Mr Calvin Mncwango said: “Everything isgoing well. It is good to be united. I amworking with white people and thecommunication is good. Even on thefarms everything is good”.

Mr Golddollar Mtheza said: “In our area Idon’t think racism is a problem. Theblack, white and Indian people are gettingalong fine. Sport is bringing peopletogether”.

Me.

Me. Priscilla Baird en mnr. Theo Baird sê: “Dit is nog altyd ‘n probleem. Mense moetsaamstaan en so moet rasseverskille opgelos word”.

Mr Johannes Molapo and Mr Edwin Boshigo said: “At Burgersfort there is no racism. There are people from Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Mozambique, Zambia and many othercountries working here and the white, black and indian people all get along very well”.
