How to identify potential customers
Typical HPC request are from the engineering departments (commercial organisations) or the scientist/professors/researchers (academic/R&D)
Seldom from the MIS or central IT administration (they deal more with IT infrastructure like emails, web, etc)
Target organisations :
Universities, govt R&D labs, Institute of Higher Learning, polytechnics
Engineering companies: aerospace/car/ship building, electronics (design of CPUs, circuits and chips), oil and gas, manufacturing (process optimisation)
Others: Lifescience, digital media, finance

Qualifying Questions
Starting the conversation:
Does the customer have SMP machines in production? IBM, HP, Sun, SGI, DEC
What business applications are running on their SMPs?
What is the nature of the application? Batch? On-line transaction processing?
Is it compute intensive?
How long does it take to run? Would it be of benefit to run faster?
How often does it run? Would you run it more often if you could? Why don’t you?
What is the growth projection for the app? Will it be processing more data in the future?
If the customer is technical:
Is the application CPU intensive? I/O intensive? Or is there a large volume of compute workload?
Does the application have an analytic profile?
Does the application “parallelizable”?
Can the application components be scheduled?
Can the application or data be broken into smaller chunks?
Can the application technically capable of faster performance?
