Plate Tectonics

Over the past few weeks in Earth Science, we have been studying about Continental drift, Seafloor Spreading and Plate tectonics. You will now use all that you have learned and you will create a model. You will now choose one idea from the list below, to make a model, and write about how it was created in nature. Use your notes on Chapters 4 and 5 for information when creating your model. The assignment will be broken into several steps for you. Be sure to complete each step as it is assigned. Step 1: Choose one from the list below in order to create your model. __Continental drift __Seafloor Spreading __Divergent Plate Boundary __Convergent Plate Boundaries: (choose 1) __Transform Plate Boundary __Ocean to Ocean Convergent Plate Boundary __Strike Slip Fault __Ocean to Continental Convergent Plate Boundary __Reverse Fault __Continental to Continental Convergent Plate Boundary __Normal Fault __Rift Valley You do not need to buy expensive materials. Step 2: On a separate sheet of paper (we’ll call it the Project Work Paper), make a drawing of the model that you will be basing your project on. This drawing should be carefully drawn, labeled and neatly colored, and include lots of details. (This part of the project should be ready by Dec 2)

Step 3: The model should not be bigger than a piece of paper. (8x11) The model should not be smaller than a piece of paper (8x11). Step 4: Create your model. Remember how big you decided to make your model. Your model should be similar to your drawing. Whatever you chose that is what your model should look like. . Do not forget to label the features of your model, and color it carefully. Think about the material you will use to make your model. You do not need to spend money in order to do an excellent job on your assignment. Be creative and use recycled materials like boxes, plastic bottles, heavy paper, cork boards, etc. Once your materials have been collected, use your drawing in step 2 and build your model. Once built, add some final touches to your model so that it resembles your drawing: Use colored paper, paint, felt, or other art material to decorate. Do not spend money at a copy shop to enlarge or shrink a matching part for your project. Step 5: The final step is to write a two-paragraph summary (half a page) on your Project Work Paper. In the first paragraph you will describe:

• How was it working in this project? • Who helped you make this model? • Was this project easy or hard? Did you like it? Why or why not? • Did you learn something new?

In the second paragraph you will tell me about your topic:

• Tell me about your model. How is it created in nature? What are the forces that create

it? You should use many vocabulary words to explain your chosen topic!! (example: convection, subduction, type of stress…) You should tell me as many details about the topic (idea) you chose. I will have to take points off if you are not able to explain it fully and clearly.

• Look through your notes on Chapters 4 and 5 for information. • You can also go to Mrjimenez.weebly.com and see the PowerPoint or watch the movies

on Brainpop.com to get ideas or information. • You also have your science book, which has a lot of information. • Don’t forget to use punctuation (capital letters, periods, comas…)

Project Due Date: __________Dec 6_______ You will turn in this assignment sheet, your summary, your model, and your drawing on the due date.

I have shared this project work with my parent. _________________________________________
