Aluminium hydroxide (ATH) and magnesium hydroxide (MDH) are produced and sold by
Alpha Calcit under the brand name ALFRIMAL.
Four product families of ALFRIMAL© are available:
ALFRIMAL aluminium hydroxide Standard ATH
ALFRIMAL aluminium hydroxide Steep ATH
ALFRIMAL aluminium hydroxide Fine ATH
ALFRIMAL MG magnesium hydroxide Fine MDH
Aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide do function extremely well as flame retardants due to
the fact that they give off a third of their weight in form of water at specific temperatures.
1. This decomposition reaction is endothermic, it uses up energy and by doing so it cools the
fire down.
2. The evaporating water hinders oxygen to get into contact with the flammable gases
from pyrolysis.
3. The remaining oxide stays on the surface of the solids forming a non-reactive protection layer.

The following table shows the standard ATH grades of ALFRIMAL©.
Standard grades ATH can be used as flame retardant for all applications or they can be combined
with steep and/or fine ATH grades.

ALFRIMAL© 104
ALFRIMAL© 104 represents a fine particle-sized product. Whereas standard ATH qualities
show spherical structures, the fine quality is composed of primary particles in the submicron
range which recombine as clusters.

© MG-H 4
ALFRIMAL© MG-H 4 is based on natural magnesium hydroxide (brucite). H means hydrophobic .
Magnesium hydroxide shows a high pH-value of 10 in combination with a BET surface of 7 m²/g. This
results in a high activity in formulations and as catcher of acid fire gasses in flame protection agents
as well as in PVC formulations. ALFRIMAL© MG-H 4 is temperature resistant up to 300 °C.
ALFRIMAL© MG-H 4 is required for products with compounding and/or processing temperatures of >
200 °C when ATH shall not be used. ALFRIMAL© MG-H 4 can be used for polypropylene even at
processing temperatures of about 250 °C.
