The ChallengePlastic Surgeon was called in by JF Finnegan, a national building contractor active in the public and private sectors, to repair a generator grille located within St Paul’s multi-storey car park, Sheffield. Several separate areas of damage to the grille’s frame and louvres demanded attention, but the location on one of the car park’s main spiral access ramps meant shutting the area to traffic to facilitate removal and replacement simply was not viable.
The SolutionPlastic Surgeon’s Fine Finisher was able to undertake a repair in-situ by using cones and warning signs to set up a safe working area while vehicles continued to drive past. used successive applications of a two-pack filler to rebuild the different profiles and angles where the metal had been scratched and dented.
All filled areas were then sanded smooth using a variety of rubbing blocks and manual shaping before the surface was given a coat of Plastic Surgeon’s own specially formulated primer, prior to the entire grille being re-sprayed in off-white as original.
The ResultThe grille was returned to pristine condition and the entire operation completed within a four hour period to the full satisfaction of the client. The success of this repair in a difficult situation has since led to JF Finnegan tasking Plastic Surgeon with remedial work to some curtain walling panels on the upper levels to the St Paul’s MSCP, as well as other contracts in the region.
Sustainable RepairsAt the same time as providing clients with a comprehensive cosmetic repair service addressing virtually every type of product and substrate, Plastic Surgeon is also addressing important aspects of the sustainability agenda. For while the company’s ethos of ‘repairing rather than replacing’ represents a saving of approximately £3 for every pound spent, this approach also significantly reduces waste going to landfill and therefore helps cut a customer’s carbon footprint. Uniquely, Plastic Surgeon has developed its VisibilITy software which translates each finisher’s job report, sent from their palm pilot, into the equivalent weight and other statistics on a data base that participating customers can utilise for their own sustainability reporting.
