    What is Plastic?

Plastic is a term used for wide range of synthetic and semi-synthetic organic amorphous solids.

The word plastic is derived from Greek work plastikos which means

    fit for molding.

Plastics of various types are used in a number of industries toproduce different items.

The non-biodegradable nature of plastic is making it remain usable

for even upto thousand years of its production.

    Types of Plastic?

A thermoplastic or thermosoftening plastic is a polymer which turnsinto liquid when heated and freezes to a glassy state when cooledsufficiently.

This property makes thermoplastic polymer to be heated, meltedand remolded again and again into various shapes.

The thermostatic solids can be melted and molded only once. Theycan not be molded and reshaped again after first solidification.

    Indian Plastic Industry

Indian plastic industry started its functioning in year 1957 with theproduction of polystyrene.

Production of Low Density Polyethene (LDPE) in India started in

    year 1959.

It was succeeded by PVC in year 1961 and High DensityPolyethene (HDPE) in year 1968.

Polypropylene was the latest to start in year 1978.

The plastic processing sector in India comprises of around 30,000small and large manufacturing and molding units.

The economic reforms launched in India in year 1991 have added

further fillip to the Indian plastic industry.07-Apr-10 5

    Polypropylene

Polypropylene or PP is a thermoplastic polymer used widely inindustries.

PP is used in industries like:

    Packaging Textile

    Stationary

    Food industry

    Lab equipments

    Automotive components Bank notes

PP is resistant to most chemical solvents, bases and acids.

    Polypropylene Special Features

PP has an intermediate level of crystallinity between that of LowDensity Polyethene (LDPE) and High Density Polyethene (HDPE).

PP is tough and flexible making it an engineering plastic.

PP is reasonably economical making it widely used.

Polypropylene can be easily processed with simple methods likeextrusion and molding.

PPs reusability makes it the best material for injection molding.

    Polypropylene Uses

Due to resistance of PP to fatigues, it is widely used on plastichinges like than on flip-top bottles.

PP is used in making piping system for high purity systems.

PP can withstand high temperatures and pressure in autoclave, which makes it an ideal material for laboratory and other medicalpurposes.

Its heat resistance makes it easy to be used in food grade

    containers and kettles.

Car batteries, waste baskets, cooler bodies and dishes are alsomade of PP.

    Polypropylene Uses

Various thin sheets of PP are used together to make filter systemfor air and water. These sheets contain filters ranging from 0.5 to30 microns.

PP is also used as an alternate to PVC for making insulating cablesfor electrification, especially in low ventilation environment.

It is used in making plastic items by injecting heat melted materialinto mould of custom shapes, making it easier and cheaper toproduce and consume.

    Polypropylene Bags

PP bags are the special bags made from polypropylene usedwidely around the globe.

These are especially used for packaging products that need to be

    protected from moisture.

The major products under PP bags are:

    Unlaminated PP woven fabric.

    Laminated PP woven fabric.

Laminated and unlaminated printed woven bags.

    PP woven bags/sacks with liner.

    Laminated PP woven gusseted bags.

    Cape cover and container liner.

    FIBCs

These are the high capacity bags used to carry material in bulk.

Due to high labor costs in developed countries, the industries preferFIBC bags instead of traditional PP bags.

One FIBC bag can carry around 2,000 Kg. goods at a time with thehelp of one machine and one operator, thus saving high laborcosts.

    Polypropylene in Global Industry

Its tough and flexible nature makes PP an industrial raw material.

PP can withstand high temperature and pressure and is not easilydegradable.

Due to its wide usage, the PP market has been emerging as astrong force in recent years.

The global turnover recorded for trade of polypropylene goods inyear 2007 was about US$ 65 billion accounting for a volume of 45.1

million tones of material traded in various forms.

    Council

The plastic export promotion council also know as PLEXCOUNCILis department set under The Ministry of Commerce and Industry,Department of Commerce, Govt. of India.

PLEXCOUNCIL was established in year 1995, when the export ofplastic got a boom after liberalization in 1991.

As a result of starting the council, the exports from Indian plasticindustry touched USD 3187 million mark in year 2006-07.

Since its establishment, PLEXCOUNCIL has achieved over 2000members.

    Plastics USA & India

Before 2005, the plastic bags export segment was dominated byChinese, Malaysian and Thailand exporters due to their low costoffer.

In 2005, after the levying of Anti Dumping duties on these threecountries, as the goods from these countries had materially injuredUS markets, the export opportunity was thrown open to othercountries including India.

Due to the Anti Dumping duty on these competitors, the Indias total

exports which were around US$ 950 million got a hike of 10-15percent in following financial years.

Even due to the recession observed recently and a negativegrowth in USAs import it is yet the largest importer of plasticmaterial from India touching about US$ 185 millions.

    Conclusion

Plastic has become today an integral part of human life and society.

Its wide range of uses has made plastic the favorite industrialmaterial.

Trade of plastic goods are major contributors in foreign earnings ofthe country.

Proper usage, handling and disposal of plastic is quiet importantwhich could lead to safer environment and boost in trade.

Plastic should be recycled as much as possible as it is nobiodegradable and its degradation is a long process.
