2015COLOURFORECAST

Page 2: Plascon 2015 Colour Forecast

As we move into 2015 we embrace a sense of freedom and courage, looking to the future with optimism and positivity. With this spirit we also explore the power of colour and all that it brings to our lives and homes: energy, warmth and inspiration.

For this year’s Forecast we have partnered with Global Color Research™, the colour experts behind MIX Magazine – a global thought leader in colour and design trends. With the combination of our unique viewpoints and experience we hope to help bring colour inspiration to the South African market in a new and exciting way.

Page 3: Plascon 2015 Colour Forecast

Ever-present floral designs are radically redefined in this trend. Starting in the world of fashion, depictions of natural motifs are more energetic and exuberant with a high energy and mix and match approach to colour and print.

As a counter to the geological feeling of Mineral Essence, Fluidity sees traditional structure and order turned on its head. Designs are inspired very literally by the mutability and unpredictability of water.

THE INFLUENCESPaint colour trends are always influenced by bigger shifts in fashion and design, and this season is no different. These are four key trends on our radar at the moment and they inspire not just the colours in our homes but also the finishes, designs and more.

MINERAL ESSENCE We find ourselves inspired by all things mineral from the precious shimmer of gems to the patina of time-worn metallics and the unique tone of marble.

FLUIDITY

ENERGETIC BLOOM

Globally we’re seeing a return to a simple, uncomplicated aesthetic with product designers showcasing the beauty of everyday essential objects. Form and function work together in new exciting ways and craft is celebrated in all its expressions.

Evoking an atmosphere of mystery and contemplation, Urban Glow explores an ethereal world within an urban scene. Inspired by sunrise and sunset over the

cityscape, a beautiful combination of colour travels from faint wisps to the more graphic accents of the industrial landscape. This blend of barely there pastel tones

and dark shades creates an enigmatic yet positive mood.

Key Influences: Layered colour, ombre and diffused shades, iridescence, geometric graphics, colour blocking.

The trend for earth-inspired themes gains new dimensions in Natural Balance. Darker tones of organic greens reflect the rugged forest and inspire interiors where walls, floors and ceilings

are all immersed in deep colour. Weathered treatments, mottled pattern and watercolour effects all influence this trend’s aesthetic. This new take on a lasting theme provides comfort and tranquility, with an added sense of mystery evoking soothing yet sumptuous hideaways.

Key Influences: Weathered treatments, gloss sheen, rich colour, metallic accents, tranquil spaces.

Vivid Contrasts

Vivid Expression is a celebration of excess, with bright colours uniting in one story and reflecting a world of abundance. Decadent and high-spirited, this theme reflects a global

culture through a combination of hot tropical hues and neutral organic shades. Our senses are heightened in this lively story, where we get an instant rush of adrenaline, complemented by a colour overload that inspires large-scale designs. Surface decoration becomes indulgent

and rich, with bold tones and playful application creating a joyful atmosphere.

Key Influences: Sensory overload, colour clash, artistic style, mix and match design, playful application.

Purple is linked to spirituality, self-respect and dignity. It encourages an open mind and promotes creativity and originality. Purple gives an air of grandeur and sophistication to a room, creating an atmosphere of luxury, royalty and mystery. One of the best partners for purple is green, as the combination is often seen in nature. Violet, orchid and lavender purples work best in bedrooms, studies, recovery wards and waiting rooms. The complementary colour to purple is yellow.

Blue is one of the world’s favourite colours, and this is not surprising considering the gentle, calm and relaxing effect it has on us. It helps us to feel protected from the hustle and bustle of a busy day. Blue is best used in rooms in which you wish to create a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere, such as bedrooms and bathrooms. Electric blues, however, have far more energy and are more invigorating than relaxing. To warm up a blue scheme, add red, orange or yellow accents.

Orange and peach create a welcoming, friendly and sociable environment. They also get the creative juices flowing. Orange works well in kitchens and dining rooms because it stimulates conversation, increases the appetite and aids digestion. It also provides a wonderful backdrop for candlelight and is often used in restaurants.

Green has a balancing effect, creating a feeling of space and a connection to nature. It is soothing and calming, both physically and mentally, making it a great stress reliever. Greens work well with neutral colours like sand and stone and can be used to balance any colour scheme through accents like pictures, cushions or even green plants.

Red is the colour of life. It is a powerful energizer and stimulant, strengthening our whole system to make us feel strong and alive. Being an action-oriented colour, red is best used in spaces where activity takes place, like kitchens, playrooms, dining rooms, passages and recreation areas. Pink has a more nurturing and pacifying effect on us, and is suitable for bedrooms and bathrooms and relaxation areas.

White is the colour of peace, purity, innocence and tranquility. It encourages openness and freedom and gives you space and time to reflect on your life. A white room is a good space in which to restore your equilibrium, although too much white can also lead to feelings of loneliness. It is more successful when used as a backdrop to set off other colours and there are a variety of soft whites which are less alienating.

Yellow is one of the most uplifting colours in the spectrum. It is also mentally stimulating, making people alert, helping with decision making and aiding in concentration. Being a lively sociable colour, yellow can be used in the family room, dining room or kitchen. Softer buttery shades can be used in the bedroom. Yellow works best when combined with other colours – try adding purple and blues to balance and enhance a yellow scheme.

Colour is the s ingle most important design element in creat ing spaces that ref lect our own personal sty le. Each and every colour has an energy that affects us whether we l ike that colour or not – be i t bold and br ight or l ight and subtle. By understanding the qual i t ies and effects of colour, we can enhance our l ives and br ing harmony into our homes. Important ly, we also need a var iety of colours in our homes, just as we need var iety in the food we eat and the things we do.
