The Philippine American Press Club, USA turns 25 this year, quite a milestone in our history. We managed to hold true and fast the vision of our founders. They were men and women who, though of different inclinations and aspirations, were bound together by their friendship, culture, their past, and journalistic zeal to provide service to their transplanted countrymen. Many journalists have come before them and made their mark individually but it was not until a quarter of a century ago that a Fil-ipino American press corps came into fruition. A realization that indeed, there is strength in numbers, particularly from an articulate, effective and purpose driven group.

As our journey moves onward, we look back and salute once more our colleagues who’ve blazed the way before us, and those who continue on and carry the torch of the Filipino ideals in journalism and community leadership.

Today, we celebrate, not only PAPC’s 25th anniversary but also the nominees and winners of the Second Plaridel Awards as they pursue excellence in their field. We thank them for submitting their articles, and the humility to allow their peers to judge their work. We’re glad to announce that on our second year, we got twice the entries from last year. We also picked the interest of serious writers and they, too, threw their hats in the ring. Bringing our judges in a tizzy or rather putting me in a panic looking for more judges.

We also honor two individuals today who have shown exceptional leadership in journalism, and com-munity service. We present them with the Torch Bearer Award. They are Consul General Marciano A. Paynor, Jr. who has instituted many reforms and initiatives that have enhanced the services offered by the consulate. He has also engaged and involved everyone in the community through multi-genera-tional endeavors and has virtually made the consulate offices on Sutter Street a virtual Fil-American community center where Bay Area Filipino expatriates gather to commemorate important events. He has encouraged the elders to mentor the youth to treasure and carry on our cultural heritage.

We salute Jose Antonio Vargas, Pulitzer Prize winner and founder of Define American, who bravely unmasked his immigration status to fight for “Dreamers” and immigration reform. He used his gift of prose and stature to make headway in an unchartered course. But more so for the heart and courage to lead on and accept the flack and abuse thrown at him, although mixed in with the accolades, of course, to pursue his cause.

To them we offer the Torch Bearer Award – “for bearing the torch of the Filipino Ideal and keeping it aflame through the winds of change and the passage of time in their work as journalists and communi-ty leaders.”

THE PLARIDEL AWARDS

Over a century ago, Marcelo H. del Pilar, a Filipino jour-nalist and publisher went into exile in Europe. His fearless commentaries against the oppressive Spanish rule made his exile inevitable. Through it all, his desire to be a jour- nalist never waned and he continued his writing while abroad. He was unrelenting in his pursuit of truth, fairness, and the upliftment of his constituents. Plaridel was his nom de plume, the anagram of his surname, DelPilar.

In him the Philippine American Press Club, U.S.A. (PAPC) has found a hero - a person to emulate and an inspiration to Filipino American writers and publishers everywhere who continue in their journalistic aspirations and in service to their constituents in the new land they now call home.

As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Philippine American Press Club, U.S.A. we wish to honor our hardworking press corps, and the media agencies they represent. They have made the vibrant Filipino Ameri-can community well-informed, entertained and involved through the years.

ABOUT THE PHILIPPINE AMERICAN PRESS CLUB, USA

Filipino GazetteThe home of every Filipino around the Web

Established in 1988, PAPC was founded by former mem-bers of the National Press Club of the Philippines who had immigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area and saw the need for US based Filipino American media group. All fierce advocates for truth, fairness, and excellence in journalism, they realized the vital role of media education and advocacy for the fast-growing Filipino population. They represented a small but influential set of local Filipino publications: Philippine News, The Eye, Filipino Monitor, Philippine Examiner, Philippine Chronicle, Filipinas Maga-zine, and Filipino Guardian. We salute them all. We honor the vision of these men and women.

Two decades later, some of those earlier publishers and publications have come and gone. But have since been replaced by newer but similarly engaged publishers and broadcasters such as ABS-CBN, Asian Journal, Philippines Today, FilAm Star, Filipino American Radio Network, Filipino Gazette, GMA Pinoy TV, Manila Mail, Inquirer.net, Philippine Headlines, Positively Filipino, Power ng Pinoy, and San Francisco Post.
