CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

This last few weeks have been a whirlwind with family arriving for the 50th anniversary of my wife’s closest friend. I also had 2 of the great grand children for a month up till this time. First I fished with the kids and Janelle came with me to keep an eye on Brooke.

Whirlwind With Family!

We had a great time together. When Brooke caught her first fish she told me “I caught a fish let’s go home and swim in the pool” We caught a few more fish but we did not stay out there too long. The next day Janelle and I tried to get out for a few hours. The waters were being blown in and the flood gates were closed. By the time they opened there were storms approaching but we still snuck out for a few specks and this surprise that came in to feast on the feeding trout.

Another day I took Faron and Mam out. The day was flat calm with no air moving. I decided to run out to the empire rigs looking for a few red snapper. We managed to loose 2 baits before I had to pick up and move inshore. The stagnant air and sun did not set well with Mam. I had to turn on the AC at 40 mph. Once inshore near the jetties she tried to keep cool while Faron and I put a few trout in the box. We managed 23 of them before the tide changed and they shut down or moved. We went through a lot of throwback shorts to get the ones we did. All were caught on Vu Du shrimp. The pearl white produced a bit better than the Cajun pepper but both got a lot of action. It was still early so instead of going back to the barn I went and hit some islands near No Mans land. We picked a good black drum, a few redfish, and a flounder to finish our day.

By the time the BIG 50th DAY arrived I had 2 families at the J Bar and 3 families at the Empire Inn as well as all 4 bedrooms in our house full. What a wonderful way to trash our home.

Sunday I had Bobby Wied of B&S Taxidermy in Eagle Lake Texas and our son James, his wife Kyla their daughter Jo-Jo and her friend Sadie out looking for a few red snapper. This was to be a go get them and back in type of trip. Talk about things not going my way. Our first stop Sadie gets her wish. She asked me if any sharks were out there and that’s what we got first.

I moved out from there to some open water structures looking for the elusive red dogs. Now that they are out of season it is free feeding fest for the masked bandits.

Kyla also had some tugging time with the amberjacks. These kids are from Illinois, so any fish bigger than a bass they never saw.

James and Kyla married recently so this is a new addition to my family. My wife had met them a few times before when it Kentucky but this was the first time for me. A new daughter in law and a 14 year old grand daughter. Raise them first then bring them to us. Kyla even landed a bonito but the red dogs were still not chewing.

It was not until after noon that we found our first red snapper. Keep in mind I was not looking for just keeper red snapper I was targeting the larger size ones. Bobby got us started with this beauty that came in from 260 feet of water. A nice way to break him in. I know that when you walk into his taxidermy shop you will see this picture in his office.

Welcome to the 2016 Grand Isle Tarpon Rodeo!

I got four fish at that spot then the current changed and the fish moved to another spot around the rig. I moved to the next closest rig. Jo-Jo started off the action again on her first drop. After that fish she took a break. The lack of a breeze and sun beaming down did it’s toll on everybody.

As soon as we had our limit we headed in. At Venice Marina I cleaned the fish while the restaurant prepared our food. A good ending to a busy few weeks.

Life is Good!Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.

A Chanticleer is...

A: An island group off the Louisiana coast.B: An expensive, fancy French ceiling lighting fixture.C: A drug designed to help you stop smoking. D: A really proud, domineering and sharp rooster.

If you guessed D, you are correct. A Chanticleer is the mascot of the Coastal Carolina baseball team, which last week won the College World Series in their first appearance in Omaha. To get there, they had to defeat the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge, a baseball team known for strutting its stuff for the past 25 years on the baseball diamond. They did so, in a two-game sweep in which the Tigers looked anemic at the plate and in the field.

The Chanticleers have had a better team, talent-wise, but that team lost to eventual CWS champions South Carolina in 2010 in a Super Regional in Columbia, South Carolina. That was the same scenario that played out this year, only Coastal won the Super Regional and survived several elimination games to best Arizona, 4 to 3, to win the title Thursday. From a purist standpoint, this year’s CWS was the best perhaps ever. The Chanticleers won their league title, as expected, but were not good enough to host a regional or super regional. Arizona was preseason ranked number nine in the Pac 12. Crazy mascots, dance routines and other baseball goofiness ran amuck this year more so than most. Only three of the nation’s top 8 baseball teams made it to Omaha and numbers one and three were gone after two games each. Number 5 Texas Tech got a little farther, but even favorites Oklahoma State or TCU couldn’t make it to the championship series. No All-American graced the roster of either team and neither squad had a player that’s better than a 5 to 1 shot to make the Show in the next few years. But both teams were seasoned and both had great chemistry. The Wildcats had won four titles here and were among the top ten collegiate teams in number of CWS appearances. Their last title was in 2012. But finally the new, heartless for hitters, baseball stadium in Omaha gave up a few exciting innings and one magnificent home run in the final game. It lacked the drama of the 1996 Warren Morris home run for LSU against Miami but then again, what play will ever top that ninth inning moment, given the circumstances and the background. It was just great amateur baseball to watch and to see if the slight underdogs, with a fancy mascot, could prevail. They did and the emotions after the final out were as great as has ever been seen in Omaha.

As a species, the roosters now have three CWS titles, counting South Carolina’s Gamecocks winning in 2010 and 2011 and Coastal taking this year’s Series. If John Wayne had played baseball for Southern Cal, that could count for twelve more titles as the Trojans have won that many since the 1970’s and one of Wayne’s greatest roles was playing Rooster Cogburn. Just sayin’. Similarities: both Southern Cal and South Carolina are known as USC and before they were the Chanticleers, Coastal Carolina’s mascot name was the Trojans.

Research on the chanticleer revealed the bird was a character in The Canterbury Tales. The school named the bird “Chaucer” which is much better than “Chauncey”. Elegant and regal, the chanticleer was a bird made from the cloth of a fairy tale. For the members and coaches of Coastal Carolina, the glass slipper, the prince and kissing the frog all came true on Thursday and they all lived happily ever after along the sea.

The most common is the crimson eyed rose mallow, Hibiscus moscheutos. It can be found throughout the state growing in ditches along the roadside. You will notice them by their large 4-6 inch flowers with white petals and crimson red throats. The Confederate Rose, H. mutabilis, is a common tree-like shrub planted throughout the state. It can reach heights of 10 and 12 feet. The species name “mutabilis” hints at the plant’s most distinguishing characteristic. The flowers open white in the morning and fade to pink later in the evening before they close. Even though Confederate Rose is considered a perennial plant a hard freeze might kill it back to the ground, but with proper mulching the plant should return the following spring. Most of us should be well acquainted with the Rose of Sharon plant, H. syriacus. A native of Asia this hibiscus has been popular to gardeners dating back to the Europeans in the year 1600. Due to relative ease of care and lack of pest problems, it is not uncommon for Rose of Sharon to live many years in the landscape. There are many well-known cultivars grown in the nursery trade to choose from. Try looking for the LSU AgCenter Super Plant selection from the spring of 2013, ‘Aphrodite’. It is reach heights of 8-10 feet tall and produces beautiful rose red blooms with dark magenta centers. And last but not least the most popular hibiscus is what we refer to as tropical hibiscus, H. rosa-sinensis. Some improvement stores bring these in by the thousands as soon as spring weather arrives. Of all of the other species of hibiscus written in this article, H. rosa-sinensis is the most tender when it comes to cool weather. On the other hand, these bushes will bloom all during the warm season. After the first frost some die back will occur but when it does, go ahead and prune the whole bush to the ground and cover it with mulch. If you can protect the root system during the cold months there will be a good possibility of survival to enjoy it the following year.

Words to GREAUX by

Will Afton

I apologize for the slant rhyme joke but if you’ve ever known a horticulturist I’m sure you’ve heard it at least once or twice before. Hibiscus plants are extremely common in Louisiana gardens during the summer months. The genus Hibiscus is made up of several hundred different species all native to warm-temperate and tropical regions. This may explain why they thrive during the warmest months of the year. There are a few hibiscus species that are native to the United States including Louisiana.

HOT BISCUITS

Summer weather means high temperatures and long days. Plants and flowers go through heat stress just as us gardeners. And what does everyone tell you when you are working outside in the heat during this time of year? Wear sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids. Now plants don’t have the ability to put on sunscreen so to speak but they do take up extra water when high temperatures reach above 85°F. This is one process that gardeners can help with. Follow some of these steps to help plants conserve and supplement water so they can get through our tough Louisiana summers.

• Keep a close eye on your container plantings. Containers will dry out a lot faster that the soil in your flower bed. You may need adjust your watering schedule during the summer months • Check your irrigation system periodically. Make that that all connections are in good condition and that all spray heads are in working order. You also might want to slightly increase the duration at which the system runs to compensate for longer, warmer days. • Replenish mulch in gardens and flower beds. Mulch helps by blocking sunlight from reaching the soil surface which in turn will prevent evaporation. This will help the soil retain more water to provide for plants. • Do not forget about high value trees in the landscape. It times of drought (several weeks without rainfall) provide trees with supplemental irrigation. This can be accomplished by using soaker hoses or just a single hose set on a trickle.

PLANTS GETHEAT STROKE TOO

Tuesday May 31, 2016Captain Michael MartinPlaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office Sir, I wanted to take a moment to praise the work of your three Deputies (Lieutenant Scott Lott, Deputy Joey Rees, and Deputy C.J. Freeney, III) that responded to New Orleans Fire Department Incident #16590 today at 17:48 hrs. This incident was a traffic accident involving an SUV and a Public Bus near the intersection of Gen. DeGaulle and Shirley Dr. in New Orleans. The incident ended up being a mass casualty incident with twenty-five persons being transported to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from life threatening to cuts and scrapes. According to Chief Adam Campbell who was one of the first NOFD members to arrive, your Deputies handled themselves in an extremely professional manner. They established traffic control at the incident to reduce the risk to the responding units which included, NOFD, NOEMS and private ambulance companies; and the risk to the walking wounded injured in the accident. Chief Campbell used the phrase “they had the incident stabilized prior to our arrival”. That may not sound like much to the general public, but it speaks volumes to first responders. Your Deputies arrived early and stayed throughout the incident and were a significant factor in the positive outcome of the incident. Thank you and your Deputies for their professionalism, dedication and hard work. Chief David S. CastleDeputy Chief, 1st PlatoonNew Orleans Fire Department

Hi Everyone, hope you all had a super fabulous 4th of July! Our holiday celebration started with a family reunion on the 3rd with lots of family of my Mom’s, side that I had not seen in years. And with the true Thibodeaux (Thibodaux) fashion, there was plenty of boiled, crawfish, crabs, shrimp and all the fixings! There were games and prizes swimming and jump houses, karaoke and dancing. We had a really great time and really hated to leave. But, we also wanted to have bar b que on the Fourth. So after spending a few hours with the family we headed back to our neck of the woods full of seafood and more memories to file away until we see each other again. And on that note I will tell you about this time’s project.

The look of surprise on this Ginger girl’s face represents all the ohhhhs and awwws as we saw each other and met, in most cases, the children and grandchildren we had never met. The smiling flower hat she is wearing represents all the fun we had. You can make this adorable little ginger girl to represent something in your life also. This is a Pamela House design and, yep, something quick to paint. These make great frig magnets or it could also be a Christmas tree ornament. I painted it with Deco Americana paints. But you any acrylic paint would do fine.

Well, that’s my craft for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.......I don’t know, but I know it will be fun!
