PLANT OPERATOR GENERAL HAND
Chittering is known for its friendly community, natural recreational opportunities, picturesque countryside, local produce and wine. All ideally placed within an hours drive of Perth, with new major transport infrastructure set to make it quicker and easier than ever to access from the metropolitan area.
Our Technical Services team provides waste services to the community in addition to construction and maintenance to infrastructure including; roads, trails, share paths, buildings, parks and reserves and leadership for a number of projects that contribute to the sustainable growth in our area.
We are currently seeking a motivated Plant Operator General Hand who is able to assist in maintenance and construction works with the ability to operate heavy machinery including; backhoe, loader and skid steer. Applicants must be able to work effectively as a team member, possess a ‘HR’ Class Motor Vehicle Licence, have experience in a similar position and have knowledge and understanding of Occupational Health and Safety.
This is a permanent position offered as Level 4 of the Local Government Industry Award, with a base cash salary of $51,000.56 per annum pro rata, in addition to superannuation of up to 15% as per Council Policy, allowances and penalty rates as per the Award. The Position works 76 hours per fortnight, on a 9 Day Roster generally working Monday to Friday.

TECHNICAL SERVICES The Shire of Chittering Technical Services Department encompasses the running of the Shire Waste Facilities in addition to the construction and maintenance of Shire infrastructure including but not limited to buildings, Roads, drainage, bridges, Parks and Reserves.
The Plant Operator General Hand position is overseen by the Works Supervisor and assists in general maintenance of Shire assets and infrastructure and some construction works. Some of the key roles of the Plant Operator General Hand are:
General maintenance of Shire infrastructure including; Parks, Reserves, Roads, Bridges, Footpaths, Trails and Verges.
Assisting in new construction projects relating to Parks, Reserves, Roads, Bridges, Footpaths, Trails and Verges.
Carting of materials to site
Pushing up
General plant and sundry pre‐checks and routine maintenance
Providing relief when required to Waste facilities
Conditions for the position are:
Full time, 76 hours on a 9 Day Roster with occasional overtime required
Subject to the successful completion of a three month probationary period
Subject to the production of a National Police Clearance
Subject to the production of a WA Drivers HR class Licence
Subject to meeting the satisfactory requirements of Pre‐employment Medical
Subject to the right to work in Australia.
Additional Benefits
The Shire of Chittering will contribute 9.5% compulsory superannuation and you will be eligible
to enter into Council’s contributory scheme up to a total of 15% (entitles you to a further $ for
$ contribution as per Council Policy).
9 Day Fortnight with general hours of operation between 7:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday.

THE SELECTION PROCESS The Shire of Chittering is seeking to appoint an appropriate person to undertake the role of Plant
Operator General Hand. The Chief Executive Officer is seeking an application from prospective
applicants that demonstrates these capabilities as well as those core competencies as identified
within the Position Description.

BAND: 4 LGIA DIVISION: Technical Services
POSITION OBJECTIVES To assist the Works Supervisor and Team Leaders undertaking works activities and to undertake maintenance and construction of parks, ovals, verges, drains, roads, footpaths, landfill sites, fleet, landscaped areas and other associated works. KEY DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
In conjunction with Council’s Chief Executive Officer and Executive Management Team undertake the following duties and responsibilities; Carry out a variety of tasks associated with the Construction of Roads, Drainage, Fleet, Verges,
Parks and Ovals, and the Maintenance of Landscaped areas, Landfill operations and other work required under the annual works programme;
Operate and maintain Council’s plant as required;
Carry out manual duties when required;
Work in accordance with the Shire’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures and the Additional Occupational Health and Safety Responsibilities attached to this document.
Maintain daily time sheets and other records as required;
Responsible for the quality and completion of own work subject to routine direction;
Develop and maintain a high standard of service to both external and internal customers;
Carry out reasonable amount of overtime with flexible start and finish hours as required by the Supervisor Parks and Reserves, Works Manager or the Executive Manager Technical Services;
Work in accordance with the Shire’s Occupational Health and Safety Policy and Procedures.
Adhere to the Shire’s Code of Conduct, Policies and Procedures as amended from time to time.
Contribute to the attainment of the relevant departmental business goals, objectives and key performance indicators;
Ensure duties, as directed by supervisor and / or manager and / or Executive Manager and / or the Chief Executive Officer are fully undertaken;
Any other duties designated by the Executive Manager Technical Services / CEO subject to Award Provisions Local Government Industry Award 2010.
EXTENT OF AUTHORITY
Operates under general direction of the Works Supervisor and Team Leader Parks and Reserves,
within established guidelines, Procedures and Policies of Council, as well as statutory provisions of
the various Acts and other Legislation.

INTRODUCTION The Shire of Chittering’s southern boundary is located approximately 80kilometres from
Perth with its administrative centre based in Bindoon. The Shire abounds in natural beauty,
scenic attractions and a rural lifestyle within close proximity of the metropolitan area.

The Chittering Valley Wine Trail passes

Holy Trinity Church
This small stone Church, located on the
Great Northen Highway in Bindoon, was
built in 1887 to hold 80 people, and at
least 117 are buried in the churchyard. A
beautiful historic part of Chittering.

Edmond Rice College Bindoon
CAC Bindoon, on the Great Northern Highway, is a Year 8 to 12 co‐educational
boarding and day school where agriculture is a focus of the curriculum.
Founded by the Christian Brothers in 1936, this impressive cluster of buildings,
with its part‐Spanish Mission and part‐Italianate architecture, is classified by
the National Trust of Australia and is on the Heritage Council of WA's interim
Register of Heritage Places. Visitors are welcome and tours can be arranged by
prior appointment,
Brockman Interpretive Centre Precinct
Old Roads Board Building
The original Chittering Roads Board building built in the late 1800’s was
restored through a Federal Community Projects. This building now forms part
of the Brockman Interpretive Centre Precinct managed by the Bindoon and
Districts Historical Society and is located on the Great Northern Highway in
Bindoon.
Chittering Museum
In 2010 a new Historical Precinct funded through a Regional Partnership Grant
with the Department Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development & Local
Government and branded the Brockman Historical Precinct Interpretive Centre
was completed
The Interpretive Centre has a museum contains varied collections relating to
the history of Chittering, machinery and equipment.
Other Services
The Shire offers many services and for those not readily or regularly available residents have
the option to travel to Bullsbrook, which is a 20 minute drive from Bindoon, Ellenbrook,
Midland or Joondalup, all of which are a comfortable forty five minute or less drive from
Bindoon.
Schools The Shire of Chittering hosts three education centres;
Bindoon Primary School is a public primary school facilitating learning from K‐ Year 6,
and is located near the Shire of Chittering Offices in the locality of Bindoon.
Immaculate Heart College is an independent co‐education school teaching the
Catholic faith, located adjacent to the Maryville Downs estate in the southern end of
the Shire, the school facilitates learning from K‐12.
The Edmond Rice College, formally the Catholic Agricultural College is located on the
outskirts of the Bindoon townsite facilitates learning from years 7‐12.
School Bus services are available to take children to schools locally and to a range of
independent education facilities in Midland, Ellenbrook, Gingin and Bullsbrook.
Shopping Bindoon has an IGA, hardware, butcher, chemist, bakery, service station and general store.
There is also a general store and service station located in Muchea.
Bindoon is only a 45minute drive from both Midland and Joondalup shopping centres.
Medical There is a Health Centre with a private medical practice, Community Health Services and
other services such as chiropractor, physiotherapist, dietician etc located in the Centre.
There is also a private dentist and a chemist in Bindoon.
Veterinary Services The Gingin Vet operates from Bindoon on a Tuesday. Veterinary services are located at
Gingin and Bullsbrook.
