“This First Diploma course has been really exciting and interesting. Much more than an English language course, because we learn in a formal tertiary educational environment, which is completely different to other language schools. It is good for hospitality students because as well as learning English, we experience the hotel environment and study Hospitality English, Kitchen Practical and Service Practical courses. It’s good preparation for students who want to continue their studies in hospitality, because you can take some courses that are part of the International Diplomas, such as Computing and Communication Skills. Taking the First Diploma gives students a head start and can also count towards the Advanced Diplomas – it’s a great first step into the Hospitality Industry.” Aaron Ting, Semester 1 student.

“Studying at PIHMS prepares you for a career in hospitality, you learn all the procedures involved in running a hotel and get

ready to be a future hotel manager one day.”William Surya, Semester 3 student.

“I started school in July 2004 and since then PIHMS has provided me with the opportunity to immerse myself in the Hospitality Industry. The Hospitality First Diploma in English language was my first course at PIHMS and I learnt English and some basic cooking skills. Because of the course my English has really improved. Through my academic and practical lessons I have learnt how the industry works – from restaurant service and the kitchen, to housekeeping and the front office.

For my Industry Placement I worked in the SKYCITY Auckland Convention Centre, which was amazing. Industry Placements can help you build your career, because if you are a good worker, the hotel ask you to come back when you have graduated. Studying at PIHMS prepares you for a career in hospitality, you learn all the procedures involved in running a hotel and prepare to be a future hotel manager one day.” William Surya, Semester 3 student.

“My name is Mi Ra Song. I am a graduate of the PIHMS Advanced Diploma and I graduated from the First Diploma course about 3 years ago.

I have had lots of good experiences while in the course, so let me explain the advantages and some tips for the First Diploma course. If I talk about the main point of this article first, I will say please come to join this course if you are planning to be a competent hotel manager. The First Diploma is an excellent course to prepare for the Advanced Diploma course if you need some more academic English skills. The First Diploma lecturers’ team will help you fully. You can get a good home-stay family, in my case I met a really great home-stay family who supported me to study and accept the kiwi culture easily. I am still in contact with them. They are my other family and a part of me.

Also a good environment to study will be provided. Actually, the First Diploma student is studying in the same campus with the Diploma students, so I was motivated by the Diploma students every time when I saw them. Also you can attend some of the Diploma subjects, so you may have some more free time when you go to the first year of Diploma. Therefore, if you or your children wanted to be a hotel manager in the future, but needed a bit more academic English, I guarantee the First Diploma course will help you out to achieve your goal in a short time and you will see yourself that you actually enjoy the time in the First Diploma at PIHMS.” Mi Ra Song, First Diploma Graduate.

“The First Diploma is an excellent course.”Mi Ra Song, First Diploma Graduate.

Sam CampbellHead Chef – Gusto Restaurant, Taranaki, New ZealandGraduated in 2002 with an Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management

My industry placements in the UK and the USA gave me my first taste of the Hospitality Industry. Working in one of the best hotels in London, followed by a glitzy ski resort in Aspen, I put into practice everything PIHMS had taught me. My full-time career started as a Guest Services Agent in a Sydney hotel, which was hard work but great fun. I then moved into a food and beverage role, as a Chalet Chef in France for the winter. It was a big step but one that proved a career mover for me. I learnt so much about food and wine, I couldn’t have asked for more! From there I took my first role as a chef, on a super-yacht sailing the Mediterranean for a summer. After a brief stint working back home in New Zealand, I returned to a private chef position on an American super-yacht, which was part of the world cruising programme. This experience, coupled with my PIHMS qualification, has led me to my current role as the Head Chef of Gusto Restaurant in Port Taranaki. For me, PIHMS has helped to get me where I am by offering me the opportunity to travel and excel in not just the hotel industry, but in the hospitality/restaurant market as well. PIHMS taught me the realities of a life in hospitality, hard work, commitment, play, and making the most of every opportunity. It was an incredibly enjoyable time in my life.

Ngawai WaldenGeneral and franchisee Manager – quest on queen, Auckland, New ZealandGraduated in 2000 with an Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management

I have many fond memories of my time at PIHMS. What truly stands out was the support and guidance I received from all the members of staff. It gave me the chance to grow and learn academically. Applying practical skills in an academic way really helped me develop even stronger capabilities. After my graduation, I moved to Auckland in 2001, where I started as the receptionist for the Quest Auckland Serviced Apartment Hotel. I spent two years here learning new systems and management skills. In 200 I began in Reservations at the Duxton Hotel Auckland. After three months I was promoted to Reservations Manager. A year later I was again promoted to Assistant Manager, which gave me the chance to be back in front of customers on a day-to-day basis. I was then head-hunted by the Quest Group to become the General and Franchisee Manager at the Quest on Queen. Quest on Queen is a Qualmark rated 4+ Serviced Apartment Property. As an employer, I can say to future graduates that the key factors I look for in any potential employees is their previous work experience, their personality and their education.

Tarun NaiduAssistant front Office Manager – st david’s Hotel & spa, WalesGraduated in 2004 with the Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management

PIHMS gave me the key skills and knowledge I needed to get me started in the Hospitality Industry. I chose to study at PIHMS because of the structure of the Advanced Diploma in Hotel Management. As well as studying the principles, you get great exposure to the industry through the two industry placements. These placements are an opportunity to sample just what the hospitality industry is all about. The experience you gain in both Food & Beverage and Front Office helps you to decide which area you prefer.

My Food & Beverage placement was at the exclusive Wharekauhau Lodge and my Front Office placement at the Spencer on Byron Hotel in Auckland. These two placements made a huge impact on my CV and helped me get the right job. After graduation I decided to specialise in the Front Office area and I started management training at the St David’s Hotel & Spa in Wales, where I am now the Assistant Front Office Manager. In my job I get to meet lots of different people including sports stars like David Beckham and celebrities like Madonna. The job is not just routine - you get to expect the unexpected!
