Yesterday you wrote down what you thought was the ideal structure for your speech in terms of whether you focussed on the personal first before building to the local and the global, or whether you focussed on a global issue and then narrowed it down to a local and personal level. This lesson you are going to apply that structure to the topic you have chosen for your speech, using the ideas from your original mind-maps and the research you did in Lesson 1, but you’re also going to look for gaps/areas of weakness. Yesterday you wrote down what you thought was the ideal structure for your speech in terms of whether you focussed on the

personal first before building to the local and the global, or whether you focussed on a global issue and then narrowed it down

to a local and personal level.

This lesson you are going to apply that structure to the topic you have chosen for your speech, using the ideas from your original mind-maps and the research you did in Lesson 1, but you’re also

going to look for gaps/areas of weakness.

First, take the mind-map you did in Lesson 1 and highlight each of your ideas depending on whether they cover personal, local or global, like we have here:

… But this order wouldn’t have much impact as it

doesn’t build to a climax. Think about what will

hook your audience when you give your speech.

The next thing to do is to order your ideas The numbers show the order my ideas came into

my head in…

However, if you look at this order, it’s potentially more effective…

…this is because most of the audience will be able to relate to

social media more than Will & Kate, and because by making it more and

more local and more and more personal as the speech goes on

they’ll feel more and more involved/interested.

On your mind-map number each idea to put them into an order in

which hooks the audience and then builds to a climax.

How useful is the publicity on this from Will and Kate? (Original research on idea from mindmap)

(RESEARCH) The monarchy in the UK are quite divisive. Some people may think that the news stories about the royal couple are inappropriate because they are uniquely privileged and will not be suffering like ordinary people. Other people may feel that hearing from William and Kate makes them feel that someone is looking out for them and caring about their welfare. It could be argued that William’s bereavement at a young age qualifies him to talk about trauma.

What is their charity? How old was he?Any that could be mentioned? The highlighted sections are areas where more detailed research or

examples need to be given to make our speech sound convincing. See if the same is true for you – and if it is, do a bit more research

The next step involves looking at the research you did to develop those ideas and reviewing whether or not it’s detailed enough, like we’ve done

below:

How useful is the publicity on this from Will and Kate? (Improved research on idea from mindmap)

(RESEARCH) The monarchy in the UK are quite devisive. Some people may think that the news stories about the royal couple’s mental health charity ‘Heads Together’ are inappropriate because they are uniquely privileged and will not be suffering like ordinary people. The recent disputes with Harry and Meghan also call their ability to deal with mental health into question. Other people may feel that hearing from William and Kate makes them feel that someone is looking out for them and caring about their welfare. It could be argued that William’s bereavement at age 15 qualifies him to talk about trauma.

The turquoise sections show the additional research we added in to make our research on this global issue more detailed.

It’s important to spot this before you start drafting so that you can fix it!

Here you can see where we’ve added to our research, after spotting that it wasn’t detailed enough.

How do we know about the effects on mental health? (Original research on idea from mindmap)

(RESEARCH) Many people are talking about the impact of the Coronavirus on their mental health on social media. We also hear about increases to helplines for domestic abuse in the news.

Statistics? Examples?

Planning the SpeechL/O: What makes a great speech or presentation?K/W: speech, presentation, formal, Standard English BRIDGES: Scavenging, listening, experimentation, courage

You’ll need to do this for each bit of research you did, like we have here for example, on our idea about social media:

The highlighted sections are areas where more detailed research or examples need to be given to make our speech sound convincing.

How do we know about the effects on mental health? (Improved research on idea from mindmap)

(RESEARCH) Many people are talking about the impact of the Coronavirus on their mental health on social media. For example on 24 April 2020, on Twitter, the National Alliance on Mental Illness states that ‘Coronavirus is causing a mental health crisis’. We also hear about increases to helplines, such as Childline and those for domestic abuse in the news. On 27 March 2020, an article in the Guardian newspaper reported that Childline had seen an ‘unprecedented’ rise in calls over the Coronavirus and had carried out 900 counselling sessions peaking when school closures were announced.

Now that you’ve seen the way in which we’ve gone back through our original ideas, do the same with your own.

If you find that, like us, when you link your original idea and the research together, you do not have enough detail, then do some more research to find more examples, statistics or quotes

where necessary – there’s no point pushing on with drafting till that’s done.

You should spend approximately 30 minutes doing this activity.

By the time you have done this you should have at least 5 key sections of your speech roughly planned.
