Ac ademic Challenge – An Overview

BACKGROUND INFORMATION The C ha llenge was introduc ed in 2010 by TATE, OHT and AAFP NRN to sup p lemen t wo rkforce training e fforts in the

US in sup port of the NHIN. These g ove rnment e fforts includ e g rants to c rea te the HIT Reg iona l Extension C enters for

supporting implementation and workforce training within provider organizations as well as grants to community

c olleg es and universities for the ac ad em ic training of students who plan to e nter the w orkforc e. Student suc c ess in

c om pleting the Cha lleng e a c tivities de mo nstrates to the US HIT c om munity an inde pe ndent mea sure of

ac hievement o f the skills nec essary to supp ort the NHIN. Eac h yea r, the O HT Ac ad em ic O utreac h Project selec ts athem e illustrated with a series of “ use c ases” for the Cha lleng e. In 2011, the them e is “Consumer Emp owe rment in

Healthca re Imp rovement.”

For the 2011 Challenge, the consumer is Ruth Johnson, who is a 70 year old, mentally acute, retired military 

sec retary with chronic c ong estive hea rt fa ilure (CHF) and c hronic kidne y disea se (CKD), who is on home ab dom inal 

dialysis. She is to b e mo nitored remot ely by da ily home me dic al de vice c om munic at ions. She is fac ed with the 

de c ision on whe ther to allow he r home me dica l de vic e da ta t o be used in resea rc h for the improveme nt of home 

d ialysis.

view a c onsume r c onsent d oc ument locate d in the OHT Doc ume nt Rep ository via an EHR they ha ve

implem ente d loc ally. Students will pa rtic ipa te in this level from their c olleg e loc ations via we b c onferenc e.

2.  University or College four-year undergraduate students will compete on the development of an open

source softwa re a pp lica tion that inc lude s the a bility for a c onsumer to subm it home med ica l device da tafrom the home to an instanc e of CO NNECT hosted by OHT for the 2011 Cha lleng e. One m ea sure of

success will include the ability of the judges to view the home medical device data located in the OHT

Doc ume nt Rep ository. The o ther mea sure of suc c ess will be the judg ing of the c onsume r GUI on the

c onsume r devic e used to subm it the da ta . Students will pa rtic ipa te in this level from their c olleg e loc ations

via web co nference .

3.  All levels of students up to the PhD level will compete on the development of an open source software

Prior to the Challenge presentations, all participants will be required to submit the code they develop

for the Cha lleng e to the OHT Collabnet rep ository name d “ Ac ad emic C hallenge Projec t” .

KEY CONSIDERATIONS FORDEMONSTRATIONS There are five key c onside rations for de mo nstrations:

2.  A c lea r presentation o f the improved value for the e nd-user

3.  An attrac tive a nd a pp ea ling GUI display

4.  An e ffic ient use o f the end -user’s time

5.  Imp roved d ec ision ma king w ith innovative da ta display c ap ab ilities

JUDGING The judging p ane l will be a nnounce d a t a later date.

Contestants will record a walkthrough of the application – max time allowed 5 minutes.

Qua lifying Rounds will be held o n Ma rch 16, 2011 to selec t 3 fina lists in eac h level of pa rtic ipa tion. Judge s will

provide feed ba c k and c ritique to a ll the pa rtic ipants.

Finalists will present on March 17, 2011.
