• While urbanisation is placing pressure onurban schools, some regional areas arefacing reduced class sizes and resources.
• Ageing buildings create challenges inproviding modern, fit-for-purpose learningspaces for students.
• In the tertiary and vocational sector,campuses are often disconnected fromother infrastructure, creating challengesfor functionality and accessibility.

Education
• Green, blue and recreation infrastructureare natural and built spaces which canprovide a wide range of social andeconomic benefits, build resilience andincrease the health and wellbeing ofcommunities.
• The Audit explores the role of greenspaces, waterways and communityfacilities in providing benefits tocommunities.
• It identifies fragmented governance as akey driver for unequal access, qualityand cost of these spaces and facilities.
• In regional areas, sporting andcommunity facilities often play a centralrole in social cohesion, while in urbanareas, pressure is being placed onscarce land and there is a need tomaintain natural spaces to help mitigatethe urban heat island effect.

Green, blue and recreation
• Arts and cultural infrastructure promotessocial cohesion in our communities,promoting a sense of place andproviding insight into our identities.
• It is the buildings and spaces thataccommodate or support culturalactivities, production and events.
• This audit focuses on nationallysignificant institutions and government-supported infrastructure.
• Arts and culture play a crucial rolestrengthening social inclusion andidentity for communities, and indelivering economic empowerment.
• There is a challenge to providing fit-for-purpose spaces due to maintenancebacklogs, heritage costs and storageconstraints, which can affect the qualityand access.

Arts and culture
• Explores the challenges people face inaccessing adequate and affordablehousing, with a particular focus on socialhousing as an infrastructure class.
• It identifies a lack of social housingdwellings of the right type and in theright place, and explores the difficulty oftransitioning between types of housing,particularly from social housing into theprivate market.
• It highlights the poor outcomes,particularly for health and education,that have resulted from overcrowding inremote areas due to a lack of fit-for-purpose dwellings and supply, withnegative impacts for Aboriginal andTorres Strait islander communities.

Social housing
• Comprises the buildings and facilitieswhich protect and support the safety ofour communities.
• These services uphold civil rights,prevent and respond to crime, resolvedisputes, respond to emergencies andnatural disasters.
• Advances in technology and thechanging nature of emergencies placepressure on ageing, often not fit-for-purpose, infrastructure assets.
• The ability of these sectors to adapt isoften hindered by the complexity andinterdependency of these sectors onothers, such as health and socialhousing.

Next steps
• Shift from Audit to Plan: With the launch of the Audit InfrastructureAustralia commences work on the Plan and update of the IPL
• Submissions: We are running a three-month long submission processuntil 31 October. Submissions will inform the next AustralianInfrastructure Plan.
• Post-Launch engagement program: Alongside the submissionprocess we will conduct an intensive engagement program covering allrelevant sectors, organisations and geographies.
