• The Audit explores the role of greenspaces, waterways and communityfacilities in providing benefits tocommunities.

• It identifies fragmented governance as akey driver for unequal access, qualityand cost of these spaces and facilities.

• In regional areas, sporting andcommunity facilities often play a centralrole in social cohesion, while in urbanareas, pressure is being placed onscarce land and there is a need tomaintain natural spaces to help mitigatethe urban heat island effect.

• There is a challenge to providing fit-for-purpose spaces due to maintenancebacklogs, heritage costs and storageconstraints, which can affect the qualityand access.

• Explores the challenges people face inaccessing adequate and affordablehousing, with a particular focus on socialhousing as an infrastructure class.

• It identifies a lack of social housingdwellings of the right type and in theright place, and explores the difficulty oftransitioning between types of housing,particularly from social housing into theprivate market.

• It highlights the poor outcomes,particularly for health and education,that have resulted from overcrowding inremote areas due to a lack of fit-for-purpose dwellings and supply, withnegative impacts for Aboriginal andTorres Strait islander communities.

Next steps

• Shift from Audit to Plan: With the launch of the Audit InfrastructureAustralia commences work on the Plan and update of the IPL

• Submissions: We are running a three-month long submission processuntil 31 October. Submissions will inform the next AustralianInfrastructure Plan.

• Post-Launch engagement program: Alongside the submissionprocess we will conduct an intensive engagement program covering allrelevant sectors, organisations and geographies.
