• Thesis sentence -- A single sentence with an essay, located at the end of the introductory paragraph. The thesis sentence functions as a "signpost" to signal to the reader the main ideas to come later in the essay.

• The thesis states the one key idea about the essay.

• For your essay you need a thesis statement about your dream job and the connection to your life experiences.

• Ex. Mary’s passion to become a social worker for Texas, stems from her experience as a foster care child in Houston, TX.

• It should be the main point of your essay.• It should assert an idea about your topic.• It should be specific and detailed as possible.• It may suggest the organization of your essay.• It should not be a direct announcement.• It should be fresh, interesting and original.

• Main idea -- Each main idea in the thesis is discussed by a separate paragraph in the essay.

• Tell a story, share a funny life experience.• Use descriptive words, entice your reader.• Give an example: Ex. (to explain your job, hobby, school life and experience.)• Define an idea: Ex. ( Explain information that the reader may not know).• Make comparisons: Ex: ( If you’re writing about your favorite animal compare it to another).• Make distinctions Ex:(If you’re writing about foods, cultures, show the difference between

the two)• Give reasons for your topic or thesis.

• Transitions words help to alert the reader that you may be changing the topic or starting a new paragraph.

• Share some of the transition words that you are familiar with from the list on pp 483

• When you use an outline, you can more easily keep control of how your essay functions.

• Outlines are usually written with Roman numerals where letters stand for numbers like this: I = 1, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4, V = 5

• 1. Why do you think some people are often late for appointments while others are always on• time or early? Contrast the attitudes of these two types of people. How do you think they• feel about themselves and others?

• 2. Some people want technology to block the cell-phone signals in areas such as schools,• movie theatres, and concerts. Do you think this is appropriate? Why or why not?

• 3. Some people believe that by giving people the ability to be reached anywhere, we are• increasing their workloads and stress because employees can never totally get away from• work. Some people use laptops to work when on vacation, even at the beach. Do you• think there are more advantages or more disadvantages to this trend toward constant• contact?
