The Environmental Management BA course at the University of Manches-ter offered a range of interesting courses with practical aspects that helped me to start my environmental career. For example we had a course that was lectured by a professional working in the environmental field, and we were also offered an internship course that gave me a placement for several weeks. Getting this real-life experience was key, because when I went to interviews the employers mainly wanted to know how my knowledge and capabilities had translated into action. Just before gradua-tion I received an email from the university administration asking if any-one was interested in an internship at the environmental consultancy WSP. I applied and was very lucky to get an opportunity to intern after which I was offered a position as a sustainability consultant. By that time, the courses and internships had created a solid ground to build a career on.

Since graduating in 2011 I have been employed in the private sector as a planning consultant, and I am currently working for Nathaniel Lichfield & Partners in Manchester. My current role is one that is extremely enjoyable and exposes me to a wide range of work across a number of sectors (including residential and retail) for a range of clients. I recently submitted my Assessment of Professional Competence and will hopefully become a chartered town planner in the not too distant future. The quality and range of modules on offer at Manchester combined with a dedicated group of lec-turers (who were very approachable) was something that benefitted me greatly and made me more suitable for a professional career in planning. The Professional Placement module in 4th year was particularly helpful as it gave me my first bit of practical experience. I had a great time at Manches-ter and I feel that the course gave me a good understanding of the planning system and prepared me for the working world!
