ABSTRACT:

In today’s competitive scenario where more and more players are coming into thepicture, there is a need to look into the customer or client behavior to know your clientwell. And also there is a need to spread their business like this in which one can choosethe best for them. Till now here in India most of people prefer unbranded clothing andthey buy clothing from traditional apparel stores but after entrance of big giants in thissegment, today’s emerging retailing environment, people’s income level and spendingpower, increasing preference for fashion & new trends; hence there is a wide scope inIndia for apparel industry and till now it is at the flourish stage. The variety and assortment of merchandise offered by a store play a major role inattracting customers. Merchandise comes in a variety of sizes, colors, makes andmodels. So any retailer, big or small, take many decisions regarding what to purchaseand what to made the goods available to customers. This is called systematicmerchandise planning. So basically merchandise decisions are related to what type ofproduct they are going to offer and assortment planning is related to the varieties ofproduct and goods offered by them in their outlets.Because of high cut-throat competition, when all market players are fighting witheach-other for attracting and retaining customers. But today customers are also verysmart and they know the value of their money; and a lot of choices are available in themarket for them. Especially in apparel industry, a lot of brands and a wide range of

Page 27: Planet Sports1

fashion are available so it’s too difficult for customers to taking the purchase decision. So it’s necessary for every retailer to provide the best and biggest possible range ofproduct to customers. And researcher studied these all in preparing this thesis andfound that these decisions and planning are continuously adopting by every big andsmall retailer; because it is the demand of current time.

The company was initially known as the 'Boston rubber shoe company'. The Converse Company initially was a big flop. It was only after they released their 'All-Star' range of shoes with Chuck Taylor's signature Converse hit it big time. They rapidly became famous after the deal with Chuck Taylor went through. They quickly became the official shoes of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The first series of the 'All-Star' shoes came into production in the mid 1970s.

Speedo-

Page 43: Planet Sports1

Speedo is a manufacturer of swimwear and accessories. The company was started by Alexander MacRae under the name of MacRae Hosiery Manufacturers in Bondi Beach, an eastern suburb of Sydney, Australia.

Today the company is headquartered in Nottingham, England, and is owned by the London-based Pentland Group. The company is currently the world's largest-selling swimwear brand and manufactures products for both recreational and competitive swimming.

The company was founded in 1914 by hosiery manufacturer Alexander MacRae, who migrated from Scotland to Australia in 1910, as McRae Hosiery Manufacturers, then MacRae Knitting Mills[1] in an effort to expand his company into swimwear. In 1928, the name Speedo was first adopted after the firm developed its Racerback design of swimwear,[2] making it one of the first manufacturers to specifically produce athletic designs. The name was made up by a Captain Jim Parsons who won a company competition with the slogan "Speed on in your Speedos".[2]

During World War II the manufacturer shifted nearly all of its production to war materials such as mosquito nets. Speedo resumed production after the war and became a publicly traded corporation in 1951. In 1955, Speedo introduced nylon into its fabric for competitive swimwear. The 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne saw the widespread debut of the new fabric and the introduction of the style of mens briefs that has become associated with the brand. The company quickly expanded into the international arena from there until the present, boasting that 70 percent of swimming medals were won by athletes wearing its products in the Olympic Games of 1968, 1972, 1976, and 2008.

Australian Peter Travis was recognised in 2008 for his invention of the Speedo bathing costume — or as the Sydney Morning Herald puts it, for creating the nation's best-loved stretch of nylon. Travis became a Member of the Order of Australia for his Speedo invention. He was also recognised for his work as a

Page 44: Planet Sports1

designer, sculptor, ceramicist, kite-maker and teacher. Travis invented the skimpy bathing costume while working for Speedo in 1961.

Travis says the crucial thing was to position the briefs on the hips, not the waist. He also cut the fabric on the side of the hips to just 5 cm deep. The report in the Sydney Morning Herald says the costume was an immediate hit, but did not go down well with the prudish.

'Bondi's beach inspector arrested the first man to wear the briefs on the beach, but Travis recalls that the magistrate did not pursue charges, because there was no pubic hair showing.'

During the 1970s and 1980s, new fabrics such as lycra were incorporated into the company's swimwear design. During the late 1990s, the company turned its attention to its Aquablade and Fastskin lines of competitive swimwear. The designs employ new fabrics that the company claims will reduce resistance in the water by replicating biological skin characteristics of various marine animals such as sharks.

In March 2007 in an attempt to appeal to a younger audience, Speedo's collaboration with Japanese brand Comme des Garçons hit UK fashion store Topshop with a collection of classic women's Speedos decorated with quirky Comme des Garçons designs

spalding-

Page 46: Planet Sports1

Spalding is a sporting goods company started in Chicago by A.G. Spalding in 1876. Spalding manufactures goods for many sports, including baseball, soccer, softball, volleyball, football, golf, and most well known, basketball. Spalding is the leader in basketball, and their basketballs sell much better than their other goods. Their premium ball is the official ball of the NBA, which has contributed to their immense success. Spalding became a division of Russell Corporation in 2003.

Spalding is also a leader in technology. Most of their technological advancements relate to basketballs. They are notable for developing the first basketball. In 2001 they released their Infusion technology, which features a built in micro pump which allows one to add air without a pump or needle. Spalding furthered their Infusion technology in 2003, when Spalding started manufacturing basketballs with Infusion technology so that users could also release air without a needle. The Infusion3 came out in 2005. Infusion3 is a dual action micro pump that works twice as fast as its predecessors. In late 2005 Spalding also came out with the NEVERFLAT technology, which guarantees that the ball will keep the same consistent bounce for at least one year. This eliminates the need for a pump and needle, at least for the first year. Spalding uses Nitroflate molecules to seal in the air and to prevent it from leaking out as it does in traditional basketballs. Coming this 2006-2007 season of the NBA, they'll introduce the new game ball which comprises two cross-shaped interlocking panels rather than the traditional eight-oblong panel found in traditional balls.

Callaway-

Page 47: Planet Sports1

Ely Callaway started the company in 1982 by buying out Hickory Stick USA. Changing the name to Callaway Hickory Stick USA, Ely reportedly sold his golf clubs out of the trunk of his Cadillac.

Later, in 1986 the company became the first golf club maker to use milling machines to ensure absolute flatness on their putters. In 1988 their name was changed to Callaway golf, and in 1992 they issued stock and began trading on the NYSE.

During the 1990's, Callaway golf became the number one manufacturer of woods and irons. In fact, it wasn't even close. With over $800 million dollars worth of sales, Callaway Golf was three times ahead of its nearest competitor.

Along the way the company acquired Odyssey Golf, which was well known for their line of White Hot putters. They also added Top Flite and Ben Hogan to their arsenal. Today, Callaway Golf makes not only clubs, but balls, bags and so many other golf accessories.

The variety in accessories section should be increased.

There should be an arrangement of a local visual merchandiser.

Each section should be clearly differentiated and no mixing of merchandise of all brands.

Music should be played contemporary rather than old one and which suits the image of the brands which it always try to highlight.

More trial roosms should be there in the store.

Theft detector system should be there in store.

Manual security system should be more strict.
