Thank for your interest in Confidence Learning Center!

Over the years Confidence Learning Center, also known as Camp Confidence, has grown and experienced many wonderful and positive changes. In the many years that I (and probably many of you) have been at Camp, we have seen the over night capacity for campers more than double! With the professional staff that Camp provides, your opportunities for fun and recreation abound, our fully accessible and fully equipped year round cabins are very comfortable and accommodating for any group.

We could not have done it without friends and supporters. The financial and in-kind support received from service groups, fraternal organizations, businesses and individuals, have given us an even brighter future!

You, individually, or as a member of an organization, can help guarantee our future by getting the message out that Camp Confidence is here to serve you, our Campers. Whether you arrive as a family, group home, school, or special interest group, we welcome you to a fun, educational, and/or recreational experience!

Our Mission & Goals

Located in the beautiful Brainerd Lakes Area of Minnesota, Confidence Learning Center, otherwise known as Camp Confidence, is an outdoor center for persons with developmental disabilities. The program at Confidence Learning Center is aimed at promoting self-confidence and self-esteem, and the necessary skills to become full, contributing members of society. The campers achieve this through active “hands-on”, activities and participation in a variety of outdoor experiences. The staff are able to provide activities in outdoor education and recreation that are not or can not be offered in their local setting. Over the years, thousands of individuals have experienced personal growth while participating in educational programs which include archery, cross country skiing, canoeing, and fishing just to mention a few. Such activities as the Confidence Course allow campers to challenge their limits and prove themselves to the most important person of all, themselves. Campers are brought to Camp from all over Minnesota and the mid-west by their staff, family or care giver, which is responsible for their direct care. The typical overnight group stay is two nights, however longer or shorter visits are available. Visiting groups include group homes, families, public schools, state facilities, treatment centers, achievement centers and scout groups. Coming to Camp helps basic living skills through planning, preparing, clean up of meals and care of campsite or cabin. Camp provides facilities and equipment, as well as a number of program specialists and college interns to assist the groups with activities and programs. During inclement weather, groups can participate in nature study, arts and crafts the astronomy room, or audiovisual education in the John Mariucci Lodge. Confidence Learning Center is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit charity in its purest form. Camp Confidence receives no federal, state or local tax support. Nor does any religious group, college, scouting group, service organization or any other group act as our "parent " sponsor. What we do have is a collage of individuals, families, corporations, service clubs and small businesses that have helped us to develop a 140 acre year-round camp for persons of all ages with developmental disabilities. Camp Confidence began in April of 1969 when Dick Endres (Camp founder), a small group of local business people, and many individuals from the Brainerd State Hospital combined their energies to form Minnesota Therapeutic Camp, now know as Camp Confidence. From that day forward, Camp has grown incredibly both in numbers of campers and facilities.

What is Confidence Learning Center?

Day CampsCome for an hour or for the entire day. A day trip to Camp can be customized to your agenda. Day camps may be used to compliment your individual or group program or just a time to interact in a new environment. Reservations should be made at least one week in advance, however, earlier arrangements are encouraged.

Overnight CampingOvernight camping groups are encouraged to spend two or more nights to gain the full benefits of a camping experience. A trip to Camp may be a new and unique experience or it may be a trip to build on past experiences that were enjoyed by the Camper. Campers may camp-out in either a cabin or a tent.

Family CampingActivities at Camp can be shared by the entire family. Parents, grandparents and siblings can learn and become involved in the outdoors together. We do ask that the family pet be left to the care of others.

Integrated CampingFor agencies looking for integrated involvement in Camping opportunities, We are available to meet your needs.

Special ProgramsConfidence Learning Center may be able to assist in programming not included with our typical camps. Some examples include; hosting your workshop or retreat, and day camps at your location.

RendezvousOnce a month Confidence Learning Center offers an educational and recreational opportunity that features a variety of themes throughout the year. Rendezvous are usually held on the evening of the second Thursday of the month. You may call for the dates and the activity themes or you may ask to be added to the mailing list for these events.

Retreat/Meeting SpaceThe Great Room, overlooking Sylvan Lake, can accommodate 10 to 110 groups. This spacious room boasts a grand fieldstone gas fireplace, vaulted ceiling and enough counter space for handouts and refreshments.

Environmental EducationOur Environmental Ed curriculum is designed based on our visiting group’s needs, backgrounds, understandings and cognitive levels with special emphasis on those learners with developmental disabilities.


Camping Opportunities

FeesDay Camps- $5.00 per person (4 hr or less).$10.00 per person (over 4 hr) Minimum of $50.00 per day.

Group Camping- $24.00 perperson per night. Minimum of $100.00 per night.

Family Camping- $50.00 per night for up to 5 people, $24.00 for each additional person.

Rendezvous $3.00 per person including visiting staff. Campers who are in camp can participate in Rendezvous as partof their camping fees.

Meetings/Retreats - $12 per person per night, $10.00 per person per day for Activity Programs. Additional meal charge of $26.00 per person per day if requested.

Lodge Use - $150.00 (3 days use)$50.00 for each additional day.

The fees above are only a fraction of the actual cost, camperships are

available to offset the cost of attending Confidence Learning

Center and are reviewed in a case by case basis. Confidence Learning

Center does not turn groups away for inability to pay established fees.

ReservationsAdvance reservations are required.

Reservations are taken on a first come basis. Please call the camp

director for date availability. Twenty-five percent of the anticipated invoice amount is required in

advance and is not refundable for cancellations made less than one

month prior to your scheduled arrival. Exceptions may be made on

a case by case basis.

Reservations and Fees

As you arrive at Confidence Learning Center you are greeted by the Mariucci Lodge, named after the great hockey legend John Mariucci.This main lodge provides indoor space for activities during inclement weather.

You will also find the Nature Center, Craft Room, Astronomy Room and Camp Store in the lodge.

*Groups are responsible for their own bedding,

personal hygiene supplies and food.

Camp has nine winterized cabins available to visiting groups. Each cabin is set up like a small household complete with equipped

kitchens, bathrooms, living areas and bedrooms. Campers enjoy the bunk style

bedrooms that sleep three or four to a room. Additional sleeping space is possible with

portable cots. All cabins come complete with: refrigerator, stove, microwave, basic cooking equipment, dishes, silverware, picnic tables,

fire ring and charcoal grill.

*Visiting Groups are responsible for cleaning prior to departure. Cleaning supplies are

provided, $250.00 cleaning fee applies for those who do not follow this guideline.

This cabin features a wrap around deck. Wood and gas heat. Storm shelter is located in the ski chalet, below the Jaycees

cabin.

Pine 1 & 2 sleeps 10Pine cabin is a duplex style structure containing two

cabins, both units are on ground level and identical in design. Fully accessible. Two bedrooms sleeping five people each, two bathrooms, kitchen and living area.

A party door between the units provides indoor access and can be unlocked for large groups who are using both cabins. Natural gas heat with natural gas

fireplace. Bathrooms serve as storm shelter.

Oak 1 & 2 sleeps 10Located next to the animal sanctuary, the Oak

cabin is a duplex style structure containing two cabins, situated end to end. Both units are

on ground level and identical in design. Fully accessible. Two bedrooms sleeping five peopleeach, two bathrooms, kitchen and living area. A

party door between the units provides indoor access and can be unlocked for large groups who are using both cabins. Natural gas heat

with natural gas fireplace. Bathrooms serve as storm shelter.

MBJ sleeps 28The first cabin past the Mariucci Lodge. Fully Accessible with

eight bedrooms and two large bathrooms. MBJ is one of the most accessible cabins. This cabin sleeps up to 28 people. We do

require a minimum of 14 people to reserve this cabin. Electric heat. Visitors are encouraged to park vehicles in the Mariucci

Lodge parking lot. Bathrooms in this cabin serve as storm shelters.

"The goal of environmental education is to develop a world population that is aware of, and concerned about, the environment and its

associated problems, and which has the knowledge, skills, attitudes, motivations, and commitment to work individually and collectively

toward the solutions of current problems and the prevention of new ones."

Environmental education encourages us to understand and develop connections with our

immediate natural surroundings. Environmental education is, also, learner-

centered and provides us with opportunities to construct our own understanding through

hands-on, minds-on investigations. Engaged in direct experiences with nature, our visiting groups are challenged to use higher order thinking skills. These direct experiences

involve using all of the senses, receiving input from sight, smell, taste, touch and sound.

Exploration and adventure leads to learning and true learning is purposeful and fun.

Whether you are a visiting group interested in just getting outdoors and exploring, or a group

interested in meeting more specific E.E. outcomes (i.e. MN State Academic Standards), there is lots to explore in nature at Confidence

Learning Center.

Visitor’s Responsibilities

Camper SupervisionCamp Policy states that Camp Staff

are not to be left alone with campers

Visiting Staff/guardians assume full responsibility for the supervision and safety of campers while at

Confidence Learning Center

Visiting Staff/guardians must be 18 years of age or older

Suggested staff/guardian ratio to campers: Needing constant individual assistance 1:1 Needing close, but not constant assistance 1:2 Needing occasional assistance 1:3 Needing minimal assistance 1:4

It is the responsibility of visiting staff to provide adequate supervision for all campers while in

Camp, including physical, emotional and behavioral needs.

Visiting staff are required to review and become aware of all safety practices and policies

associated with camp.

It is the Camp policy that Camp Staff are not to be left alone with campers.


Camper health and safety

Visiting groups are to provide personnel for emergency care who are certified in CPR and First Aid from a

nationally recognized provider.

A basic first aid kit including band aids, gauze, antiseptic swabs are available in each cabin as well as the Camp office. Please anticipate your groups needs.

All injuries and health related incidents while in camp are to be reported to camp staff the day of the

incident. All injuries and health related incidents require the filing of a “First Report of Injury” form with

the Camp Director.

Visiting groups are advised to gather and bring toCamp the following:

• Names and addresses of all participants

• Emergency contact names and numbers

• Health information for participants including current health conditions, known allergies and medications required.

• Signed permission to seek emergency treatment for campers without guardians on-site or a religious waiver.



Visiting staff or guardians are responsible for administering medications as directed by a

physician.

Health insurance is the responsibility of individuals. Proof of coverage should be

readily accessible to visiting staff who are responsible for their campers.

Transportation to and from Camp is the responsibility of visiting groups.

Emergency transportation while at camp is theresponsibility of the visiting groups. Community

emergency Services are available through enhanced 911 system.

While in Camp, vehicle use should be minimized.Visiting Groups are required to use designated

parking areas while on camp property.

Keys are to be removed from all vehicles when not in use - make sure the doors are locked.

Use of privately owned ATV’s, snowmobiles and watercraft or similar recreational vehicles require

advance notice, proof of liability insurance and review of Camp policy.



Camp Safety

Great care is taken to minimize environmental risks to campers, however, accidents do occur. It is

Camp’s policy that shoes be worn at all times and that running is discouraged unless it is part of an

activity facilitated by Camp staff.

Activity areas are off limits to visiting groups unless accompanied by a Camp Staff or properly oriented

by Camp Staff. Emergency procedures are posted in each cabin and at the Camp Lodge.

Please be advised that there are environmental risks at Camp. These include but are not

limited to the following:


Emergency InformationIn the unlikely event that your group experiences an

emergency while at Camp, please notify Camp Staff as soon as possible. The Camp Staff have been trained to

help facilitate the Camp’s established emergency procedures. Likewise, the Camp Staff are familiar with

the area and can assist you in gaining emergency services.

Please review the emergency procedures on the following pages of this guide. Emergency procedures

are also posted in the cabins as well as the Camp office. In the event the Camp Staff are not available to

assist with your emergency, please follow the procedures and then notify Camp Staff as soon as

possible.

When calling 911 you will be asked your full name, location, and nature of the call. Please be prepared to

give this information:

Emergency Procedures

While emergencies at Camp are rare, accidents and situations do happen. Following is the Camp’s emergency communication

plan and a list of basic emergencies with suggested action steps. In the case of any and all emergencies and/or accidents, Camp Staff should be notified as soon as possible. In the case

of medical injury, please ensure the victim’s safety as your first course of action.

MEDICAL EMERGENCY

Remain calm!

Assess the victim and administer any immediate treatment.

Basic first aid kits are located in each cabin and Camp office.

Determine the need for outside medical assistance. If in doubt, seek help.

If an ambulance or doctor is needed, call 911. Inform the dispatcher that you are at Camp Confidence - 1620 Mary Fawcett Memorial Drive, and your location in the Camp.

Have a member of your group or Camp Staff meet the ambulance at the Camp entrance and guide them to where the victim is.

If Camp Staff are on duty, notify and ask for assistance.

If you are transporting the victim to the hospital or clinic, ensure that the rest of your group is properly supervised.

Call the hospital or clinic and notify them that you are coming. Take the victim’s health history and insurance information with you.

Notify the Camp Director (if not available call the Executive Director). File an incident report form with Camp Director. Camp Staff will assist you.

Emergency Information


Fire

Make sure all campers/staff are out of the building or area. Do a head count.

Put fire out with extinguisher if possible. Extinguishers are clearly marked in all buildings.

Call 911 if you are not able to control the fire.

Take campers/staff to the nearest cabin or building away from the fire.

Notify Camp Staff.

Lost CamperNotify Camp Staff immediately upon discovering missing camper.

Gather other group members and go to your cabin. Maintain group supervision.

Inform Camp Staff of what the camper is wearing. Be specific withclothing colors.

Inform Camp Staff of camper’s mood/emotions at the time of disappearing.

Inform Camp Staff of any immediate health or behavioral concerns.

Assist Camp Staff with established search procedures as requested.

Carbon Monoxide AlarmExit building immediately.Notify Camp Staff.Do not enter until Camp Staff says it is ok.



Storm or Tornado WarningsCamp Staff will do their best to give

you advance notice and procedures to follow.

In the event of severe weather;

Remain indoors with the entire group.

Stay away from windows.

Listen to radio broadcasting.

Tornado Siren is located across the lake from Camp.

Be prepared to move your group to nearest designated storm shelter.

Storm shelters are posted in each cabin.

Remain in storm shelter until storm has passed.

Power OutageCheck circuit breaker box located in your cabin.

Emergency Driving Directions


Directions to Hospital:

Turn right at Camp’s stop sign. Turn right onto County Road 18. Travel to junction of Hwy. 210.Turn left on Hwy. 210 - towards Brainerd until you get to Hardee’s. Turn left on 2nd St. N.St. Joseph’s Hospital/Medical Center is two blocks ahead.

Directions to Baxter Clinic/Urgent Care:

Turn right at Camp’s stop sign. Turn right onto County Road 18. Travel to junction of Hwy 210. Turn left on Hwy 210- towards Brainerd/Baxter and travel about 6.4 miles until you reach Hwy 371 stoplights. At the 371/210 stoplights, take a right. Go to the next set of stoplights and take a right. Go straight through the next set of stoplights to Isle Drive, where you will turn left. Follow Isle Drive until you see Essentia Health Clinic on the left.

Waterfront & Swimming Policies


Camp Fires

Campers must be supervised at all times!

Campfires are allowed in designated fire pits.

Please do not burn garbage in campfires.

Extinguish fires completely.

Do not leave the fire unattended.

Firewood is provided.

Personal Property

Personal property brought to Camp is the responsibility of the visiting group. Confidence Learning Center is not

responsible for lost, stolen or damaged property owned and brought to Camp by

visiting groups.The following are not allowed on the Camp property:

Smoking

Smoking is prohibited in all buildings and around designated activity areas.

Smoking is only allowed away from children, non smokers, outside of cabins, or around designated

campfire locations

Smoking in Cabins is an automatic $100.00 damage fee!

• Firearms and ammunition• Alcohol and illegal drugs• Pets and other animals• Skateboards, bicycles, roller blades, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds

Please dispose of cigarette buttsappropriately and not on the grounds


Confidence Learning Center Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval

When you arrive, you should find your cabin or campsite clean and in order. Because of negligence by some camping groups, we are reemphasizing an important usage guideline. We request that your cabin or campsite and the surrounding area be

thoroughly cleaned by your group before you leave camp. “Good campers always improve their site.” If

the accommodations are not cleaned properly a $250.00 cleaning fee will be issued.

Ask Camp Staff for any needed supplies or equipment. Report any cabin damages to Camp Staff.

Please remember to clean your cabin thoroughly prior to your departure from Camp.

This will ensure a clean cabin for the next visiting group. Failure to comply with the

policy will result in your group being charged a $250.00 cleaning fee.


Housekeeping

Confidence Learning Center Rendezvous programs provide an opportunity to add a healthy component to all people’s lives regardless of one’s ability or limitations. Each monthly Rendezvous will provide a social, educational, physical, and recreational opportunity for persons with cognitive and/or physical challenges. Passive and active Rendezvous have been combined; go at your own pace.

Time: 5pm-7:30pm

5-5:30 dinner/social time, Activities to follow (bring your own food)

Cost: $3.00 per person (including staff)

April 9 (Thurs) Taste of Nature savor home-made maple syrup on ice cream, learn about Minnesota trees learn about the benefits that trees provide and make a tree related item.

May 14 (Thurs) Spring Fling Enjoy several of Camps most requested activities. Activities will be determined by the weather. TBA

June 11 (Thurs) Summer kick-off Party Outdoor Campfire complete with campfire skits, stories, pranks, s’mores, as you greet and meet the new summer Camp Staff.

July 16 (Thurs) Beach Party Bring your friends and enjoy a great evening of music, dance, swim, and share and evening on the beach with your BFF.

August 13 (Thurs) Summer Camp Staff say “Farwell” Camps summer staff are throwing a party for all of you for teaching them so much about life. Come and Enjoy! Stay tuned for this year’s theme.

September 9 (Wed) and Sept 10 (Thurs) Fishing Frenzy (Limited to First 50 people Register for each night) Get MORE fishing time this year, only 1 fleet of boats will be fished each night. Pontoons, equipment, bait, lifejacket are provided or bring your favorite pole. LOTS OF PRIZES! Registered participants will get reserved space on the boats.

October 7(Wed) or October 8 (Thurs) Autumn Colors Hayride Bring a friend, enjoy a leisurely hayride through our “Back – 80” and take in the breathtaking beauty that Jack Frost painted in Mother Natures’ leaves. A Campfire, hot chocolate, and tranquility are a bonus.

November 12(Thurs) Craft-a-Rama You will have access to a plethora of materials to create some wonderful gifts for yourself or friends. RECYLCE, RENEW and REUSE is the theme of the night! Also bring some supplies to share. An item list will be included in the Nov invite.

December 10 (Thurs) Confidence Christmas and Happy Holiday’s Bring a friend to share in the Holiday Spirit. Santa, dance, crafts, friends, hot apple cider, and a cookie pot luck. Please bring 2 dozen home-made cookies or candy to share with all.

The Camp Store is located in the Mariucci Lodge and has many items for sale. You will find clothing that features camp activities and logos. These are great items to have as reminders of the camp experience.

Most clothing items range from $12.00 to $45.00.

Other items in the store include key chains, beach towels, sunglasses, water bottles, pencils and wallets. Complete your trip with a stop at the store or drop in during your stay for those personal items that may have been forgotten while packing.

From the North: Take 371 South. Turn right (west) on Co Rd 77. Follow to Co Road 18, turn left. Follow Co Rd 18 1 mile, to Confidence Learning Center signs on right. (Please note that Co Rd 77 loops around Gull Lake. Travel south 9 miles from Nisswa, to the southern Co Rd 77)

From the South: Take 371 North. Follow signs on 371 "To Baxter". Turn left (west) on Highway 210. Follow 7 miles to Co. Rd. 18. Turn right (north). Follow 2 miles to Confidence Learning Center signs on left.

From the Metro: Take Hwy 10 North thru Little Falls. Just North of Little Falls, Hwy 10 splits with Hwy 371. Take Hwy 371. Follow directions from the south above.
