Plan for Mini-Lesson 7 Memory Game #1 Objective Increase attention to detail. Set-Up Place the picture of random items on the following page under the projector/Document Camera. Activity 5 minutes Tell students that you are going to play a game. Explain that you will show them a picture of various objects for 30 seconds and they need to memorize as many objects as possible. Once the 30 seconds is up, you will take the picture away and they must jot down (or draw) as many items in the picture that they can remember. Then, you will show them the picture again and they can compare their notes with the picture. *Extension: Decrease the time, add to the number of items, or add a distraction (ex: music). Refection 5-8 minutes Ask the students questions, such as: 1. What did you like/dislike about this activity? 2. Do you think you could get better at remembering things? (We can get better, but we need to practice. One way to improve memory is to increase our focus.) 3. How do you think you could get better at remembering things? (Focus on one thing at time and ignore distractions.) 4. How did this activity relate to mindfulness? (We focused on one and tried to ignore all distractions.) 5. How could you apply the ideas from this activity to your everyday life? (We could try to focus on the present moment and ignore distractions. This will help us be more aware of our surroundings and could help us remember things.) Tell the students you will likely do the activity again, so they can continuously improve, but they can also practice this at home by simply noticing things around them.
