WHAT IS A BAJA?
2011-2012 Results
The Baja SAE team from Universit Laval competed in 2 competitions in spring of 2012.
The first, in May, took place in the state of Oregon. The UL team took first place ahead
of the 77 other participating teams. The second event was held in Wisconsin last June. It
was marked by a strong performance in tests of acceleration, maneuverability and
suspension, allowing us to reach the first position in the ranking of dynamic tests.
Although we encountered minor technical difficulties during the endurance race
finishing third, Baja SAE UL had gathered such a lead that it took the overall standings.
2012-2013 Goals
This year our team looks to build on our past success. We are hoping to lighten the car,
allowing for a better power to weight ratio. Moreover, the use of electronics will help usachieve better efficiency by replacing bulky, outdated technology with smaller and more
adjustable equipment. Another important part of the project is maintaining a very high
level of safety while thriving for speed. Therefore, we must build the car taking in
consideration the drivers safety by considering the breaking point of each component
surrounding the cockpit. In the event of a crash, the car will break in a structured and
anticipated fashion, leaving the driver safe.
Baja SAE is an all-terrain vehicle prototype created by
engineering students in accordance to the SAE (Society
of Automotive Engineers) standards. The challenge
consists in creating the best vehicle using the model 20
Briggs & Stratton 10 HP engine, the same used in most
snow blowers. One can easily underestimate this low
power vehicle, which can reach speeds up to 70 km/h
and get through obstacles including rocks, mud and
jumps.

The Competition
Every year, three official SAE competitions are organized which are comprised between 100 to
120 universities and colleges mostly from North America. The best teams from Mexico,
Venezuela, India, Africa and Brazil are also present.
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is the organization that set up these events. The
competition is concentrated on two different aspects, which are both comprised of different
challenges. The static aspect of the competition regroups all the evaluations related to the
design, costs of construction and marketing strategies related to the vehicle. The dynamic
aspect includes various types of challenges such as manoeuverability, acceleration, suspension
& traction, pull, rock crawl and a spectacular four hours endurance.
The main goal of the competition is to compare the engineering design of each vehicle. The
events also give the competitors the opportunity to show off their innovative techniques and to
justify their conceptual choices to the judges. There is a fraternal ambiance that favors
discussions among the different teams, who have a chance to rub shoulders with organisers and
industry judges during the several days of each event. This allows everyone to create important
networks across North America and in other countries as well.
This year, once again, our team has pledged to participate in at least two of the three North-
American events in order to defend our two first places. To obtain more information on the
subject of competitions hosted by the SAE, you can visit the official website:

The Visibility
In exchange for your contribution, the Universit LavalsBaja SAE team would like to offer you
the possibility to increase the visibility of your enterprise. The team is present at several
expositions. At every event, we proudly display the names and logos of all of our sponsors. As
well, our platinum, gold, and silver sponsors are displayed on the vehicle, which we bring to
every one of our appearances.
In order to permit our sponsors to follow the progression of the project, the team uses social
networks like Facebook, as well as monthly emails to keep everyone informed.
For this coming year, we would like to increase our presence in different types of media. We
would like to make sure that people know about our project and the results that we have been
able to obtain so far and in the future. This visibility would only help our sponsors, who would
benefit from an exposure in the Quebec market. As well, the reputation of excellence that we
have earned throughout the pasts years, thanks to our many wins, would make it easier for us
to gain the attention of the approximately 3000 future North American engineers who will be
present during the competitions.
Please know that your investment could be in items, services, materials or material loans
pending an agreement with the Universit LavalsBaja SAE team.

A word from the Captain
The Baja SAE team of Universit Laval came home victorious from our last fewcompetitions, ahead of 115 other participating teams. We are extremely proud of the hard work
we put in and cant wait to start all over again. Every year these competitions allow us to share
our passion for performance with other teams, to perfect our techniques, and most of all to
innovate.
The team is ready to put in the necessary effort to stay in the race. We will still need
help from our sponsors, who are invited to donate within their capabilities. All contributions will
be welcome, be it financial, material, various services and even advice. We hope that we will be
able to count on your business as one of our supporters for the year to come.
As team captain, I pledge to make sure that the Baja SAE team of Universit Laval keeps
its place among the top teams. Our various victories over the last few years have allowed us to
distinguish ourselves by our speed, agility and vehicle reliability. Innovation is the key element
to stay in the race. The projects we have planned for the year are solid, and I am tremendously
proud to be leading such a strong team.
