The Marlborough SoundsThe Marlborough Sounds are a recreational haven covering one-fifth of New Zealand’s coastline. Home to secluded bays, historic sites, walking and cycling tracks, a marine reserve, island sanctuaries and a range of accommodation tucked away in secluded bays – the cruising grounds of the Marlborough Sounds are a marine playground.

BlenheimLocated along the picturesque Taylor and Opawa Rivers, Blenheim is the region’s main centre, located in the heart of Marlborough’s wine country with a range of great cafés, restaurants and shops.

PictonPoised at the head of the Queen Charlotte Sound, this picturesque port town is home to great cafés, restaurants, galleries and specialty shops. Mountain bike or walk the surrounding hills, or head to the waterfront to relax along the foreshore. Fish & chips never taste better than right by the sea!

HavelockHavelock is the Greenshell™ mussel capital of the world. Tucked in beside lush wetlands, native bush, and the Pelorus, Kenepuru and Mahau Sounds, this is a little piece of mussel heaven. A short drive down the road and you’re in Hollywood country – the dwarves’ barrel run scene from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was filmed at nearby Pelorus Bridge.

Wairau ValleyThe Wairau Valley connects Marlborough with the West Coast via St Arnaud. Long rows of vines weave through the valley, changing the landscape every season, from green to gold to russet red, before spring brings lush green again. Explore our wine country by bike, car or tour van, and discover what makes Marlborough’s wine so special.

Awatere and the Pacific CoastDriving south from the golden hills, pink solar salt ponds and vineyards of the Awatere Valley, you’ll find snow-capped mountains to one side and the blue Pacific on the other. The valley rises to the region’s highest peak, Mount Tapuae-o-uenuku, central to Ma-ori legend. It was here that Sir Edmund Hillary climbed his first mountain, a pathway that took him to Mount Everest. The Awatere is the birthplace of New Zealand’s sheep farming industry and is the entrance to the Molesworth Station – the country’s largest high-country farm.

Getting hereIt’s easy to travel to Marlborough. The region is centrally located with loads of options to get here and around.

By airDirect flights operate from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch to Marlborough Airport, and from Wellington to Picton Airport.

By seaThe ferry journey from Wellington to Marlborough is one of the world’s most scenic, travelling through a small section of the Marlborough Sounds. Ferries operate daily, and with food and wi-fi available, give you a chance to catch up on your travels before you reach the South Island.

By roadCharge your camera for photo opportunities along your road journey to Marlborough from Christchurch, Nelson or the West Coast. Bus services also operate into and out of Marlborough.

By railSit back and take in the scenery along the South Island’s East Coast aboard the Coastal Pacific train from Christchurch, operating daily from October to April.

via NelsonStop in Havelock for a meal of fresh Greenshell™ mussels and take a walk to the waterfall at Pelorus Bridge. Take the turn-off at Rai Valley to visit sunny Okiwi Bay, then drive on to French Pass – the gateway to d’Urville Island – and Bulwer, at the outer reaches of the Pelorus Sound.

via Wellington and the North IslandCruise past remote bays and holiday homes as your ferry slips through a small section of the Marlborough Sounds.

Watch for pods of dolphins, or humpback whales during the winter migration. If you’re travelling by air, regular flights operate through both Marlborough and Picton airports.

Follow the Classic New Zealand Wine Trail – a 380km (280 mile) self-drive touring route between Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay, linking three wine regions and our capital city.

via Kaikoura and CanterburyYou’re stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to choosing your journey.

In spring and summer, you can mountain bike or drive between Marlborough and Hanmer Springs through the iconic high-country Molesworth or Rainbow Stations (check with your rental company first), or better still, take a guided 4WD or biking tour of the Molesworth and hear the stories of New Zealand’s largest farm.

The call of the Pacific Highway is compelling too, with the ocean just metres from your window. Stop for a break at a café or cellar door and spot seals along the way. Or take the train and see it all from the comfort of your seat.

via the West CoastYou’ll find great rivers for fly fishing, so make sure you pack your fishing licence. The vastness of Marlborough’s wine region is evident as you drive past row-upon-row of vines and stop in at some of the region’s 36 cellar doors. Keep your eye out for arts and crafts along the way.
