As the old saying goes, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

Graduates of the Adult Ed-ucation Mandated Programs, Adult High School Credit Diploma Program, and Phar-macy Technician Training

Certification Program were honored June 11 at Plainville High School.

According to Guidance Counselor Melissa Des-jardins, these graduates displayed perseverance, learning from the mistakes some of them may have made while in high school.

Plainville High School teacher Ken Fusco was recog-nized as Plainville’s Teacher of the Year at the June 9 Board of Education meeting.

Fusco, who has taught for 17 years, spoke about how he has worked with students through his b e l i e f o f “constant and never-ending improvement.” The veteran teacher said receiving the award is a “humbling, awe-some experience.”

Assistant Superintendent Maureen Brummett has known Fusco most of the years he has taught, and is not surprised about his Teacher of the Year distinction.

“He is a phenomenal teacher with a high level of energy,” Brummett said. “He does a lot of activities. He is very animated and enthusias-tic, he keeps kids engaged.”

Fusco, who started his teaching career at Southing-ton High School in 1997, says at

phsfusco.org: “I believe that if a teacher is passionate about teaching and the subject he or she is teaching, students will pick up the enthusiasm and love of the subject. I also be-

CorrectionAn article which appeared in the June 12 edition of The

Plainville Citizen, “Decisions made on mill rate, Citizens Forum,” contained an inaccuracy. At the June 2 Town Council meeting, filming the Citizens Forum at the first Town Council meeting of the month was discussed. How-ever, no consensus was reached and no vote cast regard-ing this matter. The Citizen regrets the error.

Sandi Eighmie was re-membered June 12 at Zen Bar in Plainville by friends and

family who came to show support and love for the person many said had a love affair with life.

Eighmie, for-merly of Bristol, died when the car she was riding in slid off I-295 in Florida and hit a tree June 6, ac-cording to her longtime friend Rebecca Rexinger. Matthew Brian Woods, the driver, also was killed.

Eighmie was just 26.“She was full of life, beauti-

ful and free spirited. An amaz-ing person,” said Rexinger, of Plainville.

Rexinger said that Eigh-mie was planning on moving back north, and that “any-body Sandi met; their life was touched. She was the person you met and never forget …

she was loved by so many.”

Rexinger joined forces with Zen Bar to host a fundraiser with the goal of raising $2,500. The total raised ended up being $3,273, which will go to the cost of transferring Eighmie’s body and funeral expenses.

Eighmie’s father, Alan, and some of his friends and fam-ily teamed up to contribute another $4,800.

“I raised her since she was one,” Alan said, his voice cracking. “The way she treated me; she was every-thing to me. Everything … I was there for everything. I kept a home over her head. I helped her keep her Firebird; so much time and energy. She

MARINE SCIENCE DAY

Plainville fourth and fifth grade students from Linden and Toffolon elementary schools participated in the 11th Annual Marine Science Day, sponsored by The Connecticut Association of Schools, Project Oceanology, and the Connecticut River Museum. Students from across the state gathered to explore the unique and ecologically-rich environments of the Connecticut River. While at the Connecticut River Museum, Plainville students teamed up to clean polluted water by collecting garbage, absorbing oils and diluting toxins in the water; took a boat ride on the Connecticut River to observe cormorants, osprey and bald eagles and tested the depth and clarity of the water at various points on the dock. | (Submitted by Lynn Davis)

simply “didn’t feel like get-ting up in the morning,” and dropped out.

From this experience, Szymczyk said she has learned “how to persevere.” Now her sights are set on be-coming a nurse.

Ashlyn Bush, 20, halted her education in April 2013 after having trouble with online courses at PHS. Of course, June 11 was a proud day for her.

“Anyone can go to high school and graduate,” Bush said, “but it takes a special

person to go back.”Graduate Sarah Petrucci,

who won a $2,000 scholar-ship from Liberty Bank, will continue her education at Tunxis Community College.

Adult Continuing Educa-tion Coordinator Jill O’Brien said Liberty Bank has spon-sored these $2,000 scholar-ships for three years.

Petrucci’s message to oth-ers: “You can accomplish anything you put your mind to.”

According to Petrucci’s mother, Deborah, wanting more out of life, her daugh-ter navigated various ups and downs while working two part-time jobs.

Petrucci indicated that she has a great support system.

Graduates who went above and beyond were honored June 11. Nikhom Chaleunphone received the Commitment to Education award, Michael Bouchard was awarded the Academic Achievement and Most Im-proved Scholar Award, and Bing Zhang was named 2014 Adult Education Scholar.

Zhang, who graduated from the mandated programs, has quite a story to tell. She came to the U.S., from China, where she worked as a tele-vision news reporter, just six months ago. Zhang made the long journey to join her hus-

band Kai Huang, who serves in the U.S. military.

“She wants to be a part of this community. It’s her dream,” her proud husband said. “She is learning English to be a blogger and work for newspapers. She has got in-volved in everything.”

Zhang pointed out that, in China, when it comes to the media, “there are restrictions on how you can criticize government.”

Keynote speaker Jane Wil-son congratulated the stu-dents on what they have accomplished, telling them they are now prepared to build a happier life.

“Wilson is an ex-middle school teacher for Plainville,” O’Brien said. “She does work-shops in home economics, interview etiquette, healthy cooking, and consultant work on home management skills.”

Wilson reminded the grad-uates to always remember to

be grateful.“Count your blessings and

remember what you have to be thankful for,” she said. “Keep yourself in shape, step away from technology; if your body is healthy, your mind is happier.”

loved that car.”Chris Duhaime is the man-

ager of Funk Funeral home in Bristol.

“The airfare is $450, and with the additional costs of embalming and transfer at $1,200, plus the wake and lim-ited visiting hours at $6,000 to $7,000 all affect the price,” Duhaime explained. “There are also additional burial costs and cremation fees.”

The Zen Bar fundraiser started at 7 p.m. and ran until midnight, with raffles, dona-tions, a food spread, drinks, and lots of memories shared. Towering above everything was a screen projecting im-ages of Eighmie throughout her life.

“It was a time crunch. I learned that I could do a lot in 72 hours,” said Rexinger, of pulling the event together.

Rexinger and other attend-ees spoke about what Eigh-mie added to their lives, and how they are better for hav-ing known her.

“She made you feel like you knew her your whole life,” Veronica Haley said. “She was a free spirit. She never held a grudge.”

“She lived every day like it was her last,” Jonvia Wrisely said.

Jamison Armington had

tears as he spoke of the “kind, special pizzazz” Eighmie had. “She did everything good, I love her so much, the per-son she was – so lovable, her smile…”

edge and excitement for the subject if they see that the teacher has a passion for ed-ucation. “Do this with all you are, and this will rub off on your students,” he said.

Plainville High School

Principal Steven LePage also was high on praise for Fusco, using that word again – passion.

“He has a love and pas-sion for marine biology un-paralleled to anyone I have worked with,” said LePage, adding that he has learned from watching Fusco teach.

“I have learned the power and impact of a positive atti-tude on students,” the princi-pal said.

According to Brummett, the nomination process is a little complex, and the com-petition was stiff.

The process starts off with nominations coming from fel-low teachers. Then, a com-mittee of former Teacher of the Year recipients decides who gets nominated. If that person agrees to be nom-inated, the nominee com-pletes an application of sorts, answering several questions.

According to Brummett, “it was a very strong pool of at least 10 nominated appli-cants. But the vote for Fusco was unanimous.”

The newly-minted Teacher of the Year is going to be busy from July 8-10, as he is help-ing host “Face the Next Gen-eration Science Standards without Flinching,” a three-day seminar designed to help teachers “apply real world” scientific practices, data, and cross-cutting concepts” in their classrooms, according to a brochure. The first two days of the seminar will be held at UConn’s Avery Point campus in Groton. The semi-nar concludes in Storrs.

UP, UP AND AWAY

Students at Frank T. Wheeler Elementary School recently surpassed their school year reading challenge goal: 18,000 books by the end of May. School Library Information teacher Joyce Goldberg planned a special celebration in honor of reaching the goal. On June 4, students, staff, parents and guests gathered for the event entitled, “Up, Up, and Away with BOOKS,” which included a special dance number performed by 35 Wheeler students as well as a tethered hot air balloon ride for four lucky students randomly selected from those who handed in reading slips at Wheeler for the year. | (Submitted by Lynn Davis)

Opinion

Grateful to officerTo the editor:I was involved in a car accident May 15. I was hit from be-

hind and my car was totaled. The only good thing about that night was the policeman who came to the scene. His name is Mark Kominske.

Officer Kominske was professional, considerate and caring. He saw how upset I was and took the time to calm me down while proceeding with the investigation.

Police officers seldom get enough credit for the good things they do. Plainville residents should be proud of their men in blue. I know I am.

THESE GUYS ROCK

Three Plainville High School students were honored at the school’s spring Students Rock Award ceremony. Award winners are nominated each semester by high school staff, and are ultimately recognized for “doing the right thing” every day. This is primarily an award for students who show cognitive awareness of the school’s mission statement through their behavior. Students who assume responsibility for their behavior, contribute to the school and community, and appreciate the benefits of a physically, emotionally, and socially healthy lifestyle. Sports

On April 26, teams from 28 countries with more than 10,000 participants converged on the Walt Disney World Re-sort – ESPN Wide World of Sports Convention Center - to take part in the 11th Annual World Championship of All Star Cheerleading. These ath-letes represented top programs that qualified for the Worlds at one of more than 65 bid-giving events internationally.

In order to be eligible for a paid bid to the championship event, participating teams from all over the country had to qualify at a regional level.

ECE (East Celebrity Elite) from Waterford and the Wild-cats from Naugatuck both re-ceived these special bids at regionals, ECE at Ocean City, Md. and the Wildcats in Wash-ington, D.C.

ECE included three young ladies from Plainville High School: Lauren Acey, Lauren Lederman and Isabella Dona-hue. The Wildcats team had one young lady from PHS, Therian May.

The three-day event was a culmination of a full season of training, practicing and per-fecting these creative innova-tive routines.

Level 5 (Senior Elite) is coached by Cheryl Thomes, Brittney Colagrossi and Jamie

Raponey. ECE Level 5 (FAME) is coached by Adam French, Colby Burns and Jessie Loscoe.

Both teams practice year-round three times per week for up to 2.5 hours each day. Travel time varies, for ECE, 1 to 1.5 hours each way for the Wildcat team, up to 35 minutes each way.

Senior Shea Echols and juniors Quentin Lux and Omar Abdelsame partici-pated in the outdoor track and field State Open meet, held June 9 at Middletown High School in Middle-town. While none of Pla-inville’s representatives placed high enough to re-cord points, the quick in-dividuals showed what the Blue Devils have to offer on the oval.

Echols, who qualified for the event in both the 100 and 200 meter dash, put up impressive individual times in both events. The senior ran a 13.01 in the 100 and finished in 16th place. Although it wasn’t quite

fast enough to qualify for the final heat, Echols’ time was better than her origi-nal seeding time (13.25), one of only four individuals to make that improvement during the race.

In the 200, Echols fin-ished 21st with a final time of 26.70. Although more than a second behind the winning time (25.49), the senior wasn’t far off from a top 10 finish (0.62 seconds out of 10th).

Lux qualified and com-peted in the 800, finishing 16th place with a final time of 2:01.53. The junior fin-ished eight seconds out of first place (1:53.61).

Abdelsame ran in the 3200, completing the race

different divisions with ECE competing in the Small Se-nior Level 5 (FAME) division and the Wildcats in the Small Co-ed Level 5 (Senior Elite) division. Both teams finished in the top third of their re-spective divisions with ECE finishing 19th out of 84 teams and the Wildcats 25th out of 91 teams.

Lauren Acey is an honor student, currently complet-ing her sophomore year. She began cheerleading at the age of 6 with the Pop Warner for two years before moving on

to the All Star circuit with a local gym for seven years be-fore moving to ECE in the fall of 2012. She also is a member of the PHS cheerleading team and track and field team as well as earned a spot on the All-Academic team. This was her second year going to the World Championships.

Lauren Lederman, an honor student, is also a sophomore. The 2013-14 season was only her second full year as an All Star cheerleader. She is look-ing forward to the 2014-15 sea-son as a Lady of Fame at ECE and hopeful of another win-ning another bid to the world competition. Lauren is also

looking forward to trying out for next year’s PHS cheerlead-ing team as well.

Isabella Donahue has been an All Star cheerleader for 11 years. She is an honor student, currently completing her ju-nior year and was recently in-ducted into the National Honor Society. Isabella is also a mem-ber of the PHS cheerleading team and earned a spot on the All Academic Team as well as making All State and All Con-ference for cheerleading. This was her second year going to the World Championships.

Therian May has been cheerleading for seven years. She is also an honor student, currently completing her ju-nior year. Along with the other

girls she is a member of the PHS fall cheerleading team. She is looking forward to her senior year of cheerleading at Wildcats, and is hopeful of winning another full paid bid to the world competition in 2015.

The competit ion has brought the young women closer together by their car-ing for one another as friends rather than competitors. They feel that the most precious as-set realized from their love of cheerleading is the camarade-rie that they have achieved. They root and support one another at every event and are each other’s biggest supporters.

Pets For Adoption

CATS FOR ADOPTION - My name is Gabby and I have a step sister, Isa-belle. I am 10 years old, overweight, but I am in good health and I go to the vet every year. I love boxes and I love to watch water being poured in a bowl. I hope to be adopted with my step sister, but, I don’t have too. My step sister Isabelle is 7 years old and in good health and a little more needy than me. We are not used to people and definite-ly would not get along with others. My owner has been very good to us, but, he has to move soon and we can’t go with him! He feels real-ly bad and just wants to find a good home where we can be happy. Pictures are available. Good home only. Paul 860-471-3496 email: [email protected]

with a time of 9:53.36, good enough for 21st place.

While there were only three current Blue Devils competing in the state open, the presence of one Plain-ville alum loomed large at the meet. Jamie Crowley set the girls discus throw open record back in 2002 with a distance of 142-feet-8, a re-cord that may not be threat-ened for quite some time. The closest anyone got to Crow-ley’s distance was 125-feet-9, thrown by Taylor Drayton of Oxford.
