  • FROM THEPREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

    (1946)

FOR many years past a need has existed for a work which would enableconventual and other choirs to sing the Psalmody of the Eucharist inthe English tongue with the traditional Chant still current in WesternChristendom. Hitherto only the Introits and a few of the Graduals,Alleluyas and Tracts have been available in such a form. The presentvolume is intended to cover the rest of the field, so that every Sundayand Holy Day may have its proper Introit, Gradual, Alleluya (orTract), Offertory and Communion without any omission or need forsubstitution.

It is assumed that those who use the Plainchant Gradual will al-ready possess the late Dr. Palmer's Offices or Introits and his Selectionof Grails, Alleluyas and Tracts in the revised editions published at theS. Mary's Press, Wantage. The adaptations contained in these twocollections combine so much profound scholarship with so remarkablea degree of musical sensitivity that it is fitting for them to stand alone, just as they were left by the hand of the master at the time of hisdeath nearly thirty years ago. The present volume gives all thenecessary references to them demanded by the requirements of theLiturgy, but Dr. Palmer's collections themselves remain intact, un-sullied by the additions of any later or lesser hand.

The late Dr. Frere, in his descriptive chapter on Gregorian Plain-song in the 1929 edition of the Oxford History of Music, bids hisreaders 'take up a copy of the Graduale, or the A ntiphonale, or thevery convenient Liber Usualis .. and know a little what to expect'.Such advice, so sound and so practical, may well be addressed to thosewho wish to study that great corpus of one-dimensional music upon aportion of which the present work is based. No performing edition ofthe music of the Eucharistic Psalmody can afford to ignore the evidenceof the current official edition of the Latin Graduale, which is no merereproduction of a local or partial tradition, but a cento resulting froman extended study and comparison of a host of manuscripts gatheredfrom many places. Thus the musical text of the Graduale possessesa measure of authority which cannot lightly be disregarded.

  • 6 PREFACE

Yet a note of warning needs to be sounded. However grateful wemay be for the typical edition of the Chant of the Latin rite, we mustavoid the short cut to certainty so alluringly held out by the funda-mentalist approach to a document. For it must be admitted that theofficial Latin Graduale sometimes adopts a reading which can hardlybe reconciled with the weight of evidence. Even an establishedprinciple appears occasionally to be disregarded. It cannot be doubted, for instance, that the concluding jubilus of an Alleluya-verse is, design-edly, a replica of the concluding jubilus of the Alleluya melody itself.Yet the Graduale does not lack instances of Alleluya-verses whichhave suffered at the hands of an 'improver'. So while the Plain-chant Gradual can make no claim to have ,carried the search for atrue text any appreciable distance, it certainly has attempted to avoidsome of the ambiguities which persist in the Latin Graduale. In thisthe Editor has been greatly assisted by Mr. E.G.P. Wyatt, whosewide knowledge and long experience have been generously given tothis part of the work. Meanwhile the task of producing an unimpeach-able critical text of the Plainsong melodies, with some inevitablemarginal variants, remains for a future generation to accomplish.

The imposition of an uniform liturgical text and chant upon thegreater part of Western Christendom belongs not so much to the ageof Gr,egory the Great as to the period, some two hundred years later, when Charlemagne wielded power and Alcuin was his adviser. ThisCarolingian uniformity was achieved at the price of admitting to canon-icity importations of non-Gregorian origin. Thus the Gallican Papulemeus (Good Friday) is to be found in this volume, while the melodiesof Hosanna filio David (Palm Sunday) and of Crucem tuam (GoodFriday) are thought to be of Greek origin. Among the pre-Gregorianmusic which has survived are two ancient Agape chants, Maneant invobis and Ubi caritas (Maundy Thursday). Such Old Roman remainsas these latter may well owe their preservation, however, to S. Gregoryhimself.

In order that the texts of the English Hymnal may be provided for,the texts of the mediaeval Salisbury use are included, as well as thoseof the existing [{ornan use as reformed in 1570. The SalisburySequences contained in the Appendix to the complete edition of thePlaincha1'lt Gradual are due, in their present dress, to the skill of anexperienced liturgical musician who desires to remain anonymous. • PREFACE 7PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION

As the copyright of Dr. Palmer's work now belongs to S. Mary's Press, the contents of A Book of Introits and of A Selection of Grails, Alle-luyas and Tracts are included in this new edition and the work ofFrancis Burgess has been revised.

It has been decided to include only the Roman use as given in the1956 edition of the Liber UsuaUs or in any revisions of a later date.

A very limited use has been made of the rhythmic signs by the kindpermission of the monks of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre, Solesmes, and ofLa Maison Desclee. A dot has been used to indicate a doubled notewhenever this is not obvious to the singers, as it is before a half, wholeor double bar; but when two notes 'are doubled before a bar, these havebeen dotted.DECEMBER, 1962. S. MARY'S PRESS.

    ACKNO\VLEDGEMENT

The first four verses of the Pallge lingua, as given in this book, arethe translation of the late Dr. Dearmer and are the copyright of theEnglish Hymnal Committee. \Ve are very grateful to the members ofthat Committee for graciously permitting us to use this translation.

  • FROM DR. PALMER'S DIRECTIONSCONCERNING GRAILS, ALLELUYAS & TRACTS

THE GRAIL is intoned .. by two boys from a lectern, the Quire ...continuing as far as the'. The boys chant the ,., after which theQuire repeat the first part. But if it is thought desirable, this repetitionmay be dispensed with, in which case the Quire will join in the lastfew words of the '.t as indicated by the asterisk.

The ALLELUYA is intoned by two Clerks from the same lectern asthat used for the Grail. The Quire repeat Alleluya, and continue withthe neuma. The Clerks chant the ,., the Quire joining in the finalwords, as shown by the asterisk. The Alleluya is once more intonedby the Clerks, the Quire continuing with the neuma only. I

From Low Sunday to the Feast of Pentecost inclusive the Grail isdiscontinued, and two Alleluyas with their ". are sung. When thishappens, the first Alleluya is not repeated after its ,., but the Clerksproceed at once to the second Alleluya, the Quire continuing with theneuma only. After the second ,. the Alleluya is repeated as at othertimes. But when a Sequence follows, the final neuma is omitted.

1"he TRACT is normally sung by four Clerks, standing at the Quire-step, and. intoning it all together. The latter part of the first verse, andall the succeeding ". are sung alternately by two and two, all joiningin the last few words of the last ,., as shown by the asterisk. But onAsh Wednesday, Palm Sunday and Good Friday, it is sung by thewhole Quire, verse by verse, from side to side.2

lIn SOlne chapels the whole Quire joins in this intonation.21n some chapels it is customar}' that the Tract should always be sung in thisway, i.t. by the wholt Quire, verse by verse, from side to side.
