Yokis FarmYokisFarm is a very special kind of farm. It may look like an ordinary farm to the casual viewer, but if you look

closely at the plants, you and your kids will notice something rather different about them: they are not grown in

soil. You see, Yokis Farm is a hydroponicsfarm. They use a modern planting technology where the planting

medium is not soil but nutrient-filled water.

At the farm, youll find different types of lettuce, mushrooms, rosemary, oregano, basil, and other herbs. In

addition to the vegetable farm, there is also a bird area, where youll see love birds, macaws, and peacocks.

You can also visit the antiques museum located right inside the farm. This museum houses a collection of

priceless antiques and interesting trinkets that the farm owners have collected from all over the world throughout

the years: giant Buddhas, precious porcelainware, terracotta warriors, jade ships, life-size Egyptian statues, tribal

    masks, and many, many others.

Yokis Farm is located at Mendez, Cavite, very near Tagaytay City. It is open to visitors every day from 8 a.m. to

11:00 p.m. and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Entrance fee is just 100 per head, and that includes a pack of lettuce that

you can take home with you.

If you go during the school days, it would be wise to call first, because the farm does not allow walk-in visitors

when there are scheduled field trips from schools or other organizations. The farms contact number is 0922-

    8014220.

    Ilog Maria

Heres another intriguing animal farm your children may want to see: a bee farm! Sure, a lot of us are scared of

bees, but that does not make them any less fascinating.

At Ilog Maria Honeybee Farm, you can satisfy that fascination without any fear of getting stung, for the bees are

viewed in action from behind a glass wall. The farm is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day except Mondays and

holidays. If you wish to visit the honeybee museum as well, you will have to come between 8 and 10 a.m. on a

Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday, as those are the only days when the museum is open.

At the Ilog Maria shop, you can learn more about bee products and their health benefits. If you are interested in

bee sting therapy, you can also get that here or just learn more about it free of charge!

Please note that, because bees are easily disturbed, there are a few strict rules that need to be observed when one

visits Ilog Maria Honeybee Farm. Make sure your children are old enough and disciplined enough to follow rules

such as Keep quiet, Dont tap on the glass wall, and Dont run into the main bee farm, for their own safety as

    well as the bees well-being.

The entrance fee is just 25 per person.

You are most welcome to visit us.

OPEN Farm Open. Our farm is open 8am to 5pm Tuesdays to Sundays.

Farm Closed. We are closed Mondays and some holidays. We post announcements regarding schedules in our website

Bee Informed section in our Home page.

We treasure the small amount of privacy we have left. We turn off our cellphones after 5pm and on our rest days. Please email all your inquiries and avoid interviewing us by text.

GIVEWAYPlease give way. Our access road is 700 meters long, with seven places to turn aside for oncoming vehicles. Ifyou see another vehicle approaching and are near one of the places to turn aside, please be the first to turnaside or back. Charity does wonders.

SILENCEOur bees are still under Intensive Care. They are still recovering from Colony Collapse Disorder. We enlist yourcooperation in observing proper behavior when you visit.

PROPERBEHAVIORAROUNDBEES Do not blow your horn.

Turn off your engine and enjoy the fresh air. Babies and children in your car should also enjoy the fresh air. You may

    turn down your windows.

Do not park on our roads. There is ample room for parking.

Silence. Please observe SILENCE so as not to agitate or aggravate the bees.

Please control your kids. Our farm is safe and perfect for kids who know what NOT to do. We will not be liable for

injuries resulting from unruly or uncontrolled behavior.

Please open our observation hive so you can view our honeybees safely from behind a sheet of glass. Do not knock of

bang the observation hive and keep a respectable distance. Do not block or disturb the "bee-line" (of bees taking off and

landing) in front of the hive.

Please do not go into the bee yard unescorted. There is a LOT of bee activity in the bee yard that can be enjoyed if you

conduct yourself properly from a safe distance.

No noise. No sudden movements. No strong perfumes. No flowery shirts or dresses. No hairy sweaters, hats or caps.

These attract, agitate and aggravate bees. They might sting when provoked or agitated.

If you smoke or drink or just had a fight with your wife, do not approach the beehives, they can smell your vices, anger

or fear and will regard you as an aggressor and might sting you.

them, they are faster than you and might sting you.

FOWERSandPLANTSPlease do not pick our herbs, seeds, flowers or fruits. We put a lot of time and care into our plants. You would notwant this done to you either.

PICNICS&BATHINGNo picnics or bathing anywhere on the farm.

SMOKINGPlease respect others' sensitivities and smoke away from the public areas. Place cigarette butts in the trash bins.

TheIlogMariaExperienceWe have designed and constructed our farm so that everything we do is apparent. Observant souls will not need

    guidance.

Through the years, those who have enjoyed our farm most are from all walks of life and all of them share the

same attitudes: respect for nature, love for farm life, interest in honeybees, adventure in discovery & love for life.

We are always undermanned and have to attend to multiple tasks during the day.

Sometimes, when were not too busy, we might have the time to show you a thing or two about our bees and

farm; especially if you are nice.

    The Flower Farm

A trip to The Flower Farm

People's Park in the Sky, Rowena's, Mushroom Burger... These are only a couple of things that would

remind you of Tagaytay. So on a hot summer's day and with the holy week vacation, which we are

so fond of here in the Philippines, looming on the horizon, I began to scour the internet for places

    to visit.

Taking into consideration the limited time we had, I opted for Tagaytay. But we already had several

trips there and I have to admit, the zipline was already getting boring. That's when I came to find

    The Flower Farm.

Directions:The Flower Farm is located along Maglabe Drive (2.5 kms from the main Tagaytay

highway). When coming from Mendez Crossing, going towards the direction of Nasugbu, it is locatedon your right just after Soto Grande (forgive me if I just post the location of Soto Grande in the

map below, I can't find the location of the Flower Farm tagged just yet)

Map from The Flower Farm website

    1. When you see Soto Grande to your right, look for the next side street marking Maglabe Drive.

    2. When you see this sign post, turn right. (notice the third sign from the top says The Flower Farm.

    3. Head straight along the road, 100 meters before their gate you'll see their sign (don't make any

    turns).

Here are their contact details from theirwebsite.

    The Flower Farm Corp.,

    G/F RCI Building, #105 Rada St., Legaspi Village, Makati City, Philippines, 1229Tel. Nos. 815 6665, 815 6667, 815 6668

    email:[email protected]

Take note that you need to contact them before actually going there since you need to book a

tour. Entrance is Php 150 per person.

(On a side note, we didn't actually get a chance to book a tour since their office was already closed

for Holy Week when we were planning our trip there (we're last minute planners :) ). We just got

lucky that they were open and we had chanced upon a group of 6 and we were a group of 4 as luck

    would have it!)

Now on to the details of the trip. I can assure you that the entrance fee is well worth it. I have

never been to an actual flower farm before, yes I saw them in pictures but even when we went to

Baguio I didn't have the chance to visit any nor know of any that take visitors.

Upon entering the gate you'll be greeted by a wide expanse of land with all manner of plants

growing. Mind you this was not done haphazardly but with careful care and planning. The weather

that day was a bit hot considering we were in Tagaytay but not sweltering as is the case in Manila,

    the light breeze was refreshing.

Upon the start of the tour, the guide will begin by giving you a brief history of the farm, the only

parts of which I managed to retain was that it was Filipino owned and that the farm was 7 hectaresbig. He also informed us that the farm operates at different capacities, at times, not all 7 hectares

    are used.

Kuya giving us some tidbits of info

Near the entrance, they have their shipping area where they have a chiller for chilling plants before

they are shipped. They also have souvenirs, flowers and plants for sale there. The prices they sell

them for are quite cheap. Roses are just Php 50 per dozen compared to around Php 240 in themetro.

Chrysanthemums and some roses for sale

Sunflowers for sale for around Php 400 per dozen

Herbs and chilies for sale for Php 150 per pot

The first place we went to after the brief intro was the green house for the gerberas.

    Greenhouses

As you can see from the picture above, the place is very neat and organized. Being my inquisitive

self, I asked why they used greenhouses since the Philippines was already too hot even in Tagaytay. The guide replied that they were also using them to shelter the flowers and plants from rain, birds,

    and pests among others.

Upon entering the first greenhouse, the ooh's and aah's could no longer be held. We marveled at

the gerberas and gingerly tread along the aisles so that we could take pictures of the flowers and

ourselves as well. As you can see below, the beauty of the flowers speak for themselves.

The flowers come from abroad and are labeled. When the flowers are cut, the plant dies but do not

fret, they may have left some young shoots on the ground to flower anew. You may be wondering

what those round plates are, they are actually plastic/paper plates coated with a mixture of grease

and oil that serve to trap flies and pests. The guide informed me that they found that the yellow

    colored ones work best.

We saw other plants while we were on our way to the next greenhouse.

Moving on to the next greenhouse, we saw some Duranta's similar to the ones we have back home

but these were already well past my height and surprisingly, they bore these beautiful little

berries. While taking in the scenery, even the walkways look good, I pondered how good this place

    would be to have photoshoots!

I was amazed at the features of their greenhouses and the amount of planning that must have went

with establishing this farm. They were using foot baths and have these drainage systems that used

those huge cement pipes similar to what you commonly see in sewage works in Manila to prevent

rains from flooding the place. Furthermore, the guide explained that the slope of the hill they were

situated on also helped in draining excess water.

We also passed by some young gerberas where the black tarps were currently being used on as well

as their holding ponds and some more plants.
