WHAT IS PLACENTA?
The word placenta comes from the Latin for cake, from Greek
“flat, slab-like” in reference to its round, flat appearance in
humans.
Placenta is an organ that develops during pregnancy in many
animals, including humans. It is an organ that connects the
developing fetus to the umbilical cord, and to the mother through
the uterine wall to allow nutrient uptake, waste elimination, and
gas exchange via the mother’s blood supply.
In humans, it is usually disc shaped, reaching around 22
centimeters in length and slightly less than an inch in thickness,
and weighing approximately 453 grams. The size and shape may
vary in all other animals, but the function is much the same.
The organ is particularly important in some cases because it
prevents disorders from the mother affecting the fetus. Blood is
never exchanged, so the fetus has added protection from some
problems that are transferred by fluid exchange.

A human placenta serves several other functions. It produces
hormones, including estrogen, progesterone, and beta human
chorionic gonadotropin. Chemicals secreted by the organ may also
help to prevent the mother's body from attacking the fetus and
placenta as though it were an invader.
Cultural practices and beliefs
The placenta is a source of many rituals and traditions in human
cultures. Some cultures bury the placenta, and others eat it, but
there are many other ways of ritually disposing of the organ. Many
animals are known to eat placentas, which are thought to contain
nutrients valuable to the mother. Western medicine has
traditionally recommended incineration of the placenta after birth,
but some people choose to interact with the placenta rather than
dispose it, often electing to eat or donate it for scientific research.
The Maori of New Zealand traditionally bury the placenta from a
newborn child to emphasize the relationship between humans and
the earth. Similarly, the Navajo bury the placenta and umbilical
cord at a specially chosen site, particularly if the baby dies during
birth. In Cambodia and Costa Rica, burial of the placenta is
believed to protect and ensure the health of the baby and the
mother. If a mother dies in childbirth, the Bolivian bury the
placenta in a secret place so that the mother’s spirit will not return
to claim her baby’s life.
Placenta has been used as Chinese medicine for over 1400 years.
The dried placenta is used to restore health and is a valuable
medicine with a wide range of benefits. According to the record
from an ancient Chinese masterpiece, the placenta which is dried
and made into powder or buried under the soil in order to obtain its
decomposed substance for nourishment or as anti-aging formula.

During the Shi Huang Ti Dynasty, placenta was discovered as the
ultimate secret formula.
In ancient Japan one of the most treasured medicines was found to

Producing Hormone
Essential hormones must be produced and made available during
pregnancy in order to maintain the normal body function. At the
early stage of pregnancy, the placenta stimulates the mother’s
ovary to produce hairy glands to enhance the secretion of female

AGING PROCESS
Our body is continually undergoing complex biochemical reactions
as we age. Every living organism, from the date of birth, goes
through a maturation process, then aging, and will finally die. The
functional decline that typically accompanies age is often dramatic
and depressing due to the changes in our body system. These

Effects of Aging on Human Body
Heart Aging: The heart muscle thickens as a response to the
thickening of the arteriesand lowers the pumping rate. The average
amount of blood pumped by the heart drops from about 6.9 liters
per minute at age 20 to only 3.5 liters per minute at age 85.
Arteries Aging: Arteries usually stiffen with age, making it more
difficult for the heart to pump blood through them.

menopause. The hormone theory of aging believes that these

WHAT ARE HORMONES?
“Hormone” comes from a word that means, “to spur on”. This
reflects how the presence of hormones acts as a catalyst for other
chemical changes at the cellular level necessary for growth,
development, and energy.Hormones carry messages from glands to
cells to maintain chemical levels in the bloodstream that achieve
homeostasis.
As members of the endocrine system, glands manufacture
hormones. Hormones circulate freely in the bloodstream, waiting
to be recognized by a target cell, their intended destination. The
target cell has a receptor that can only be activated by a specific
type of hormone. Once activated, the cell knows to start a certain
function within its walls. Genes might get activated, or energy
production resumed. As special categories, autocrine hormones act
on the cells of the secreting gland, while paracrine hormones act on
nearby, but unrelated, cells.
There are two types of hormones known as steroids and peptides.
In general, steroids are sex hormones related to sexual maturation
and fertility. The placenta makes steroids from cholesterol
eitherwhen we're in the womb, or by our adrenal gland or
gonads(testes and ovaries) after birth, cortisol an example of a
steroid hormone, breaks down damaged tissue so it can be replace.
Steroids determine physical development from puberty on to
oldage, as well as fertility cycles. If we are not synthesizing the
correct steroidal hormones, we can sometimes supplement them

Peptides regulate other functions such as sleep and sugar

As we understand from the Theory of Aging, hormonal changes
play an important part in the aging process. Whether they control
the pace at which aging happens or are a consequence of other
changes in the body is unknown.Despite the healthy diet and
regular exercise, many of us experience these symptoms between
the ages 35 and 55.
The person may start to feel tired or restless, and other symptoms
like hair loss, digestive difficulties, lack of appetite, easy bruising,
loss of libido, and nausea may occur, depending on the hormone

not result in a gain of fat, but a woman's clothes may feel a bit

Low progesterone levels may cause a woman's blood sugar levels
to fluctuate and tempted to take high-sugar foods, resulting in

Our body is composed of many different types of cells, each with
its own structure and function. Some, such as white blood cells,
move freely, unattached to other cells. Others, such as muscle
cells, are firmly attached one to another. Some cells, such as skin

not divide or reproduce except under usual circumstances. Some

What Happens when Immune System Weakens?
A healthy immune system prevents the growth of abnormal cells,
which can become cancerous.

turn into fermenting cells. That is the nature of the cancer cell. It

Cancer cells exist in our bodies every day.
Cancer is not some foreign invader which has to be cut, burned or
poisoned in hopes that it will die before the patient dies. No, cancer
is simply a temporary malfunction in your normal cell division
process.
Normally the immune system will function to destroy these cancer
cells. A good, efficient cellular communication means, we don't
get sick. Unfortunately, our habits gradually break down this vital

virtually all processed food that we consume results in too much

In chemotherapy the patient is pumped full of cytotoxic drugs, that
go everywhere in the body, with the hope that enough of the drugs
reach the cancer cells and target their nuclear DNA to damage it or
destroy the cell.Unfortunately, no cancer drug has "eyes" for only
cancer cells so these drugs kill any dividing cell. Where are some
of your fastest dividing cells? In your hair and your gut. That's why
chemotherapy causes you to lose your hair and get nauseous. But
these drugs also cause long-term damage to your organs like
kidneys, liver, heart, etc.
Not only do chemotherapeutic techniques have a range of often-
serious side effects, it has also been shown that often less than 1%
of the administered drug molecules enter tumor cells and bind to
the nuclear DNA. Dividing cancer cells acquire genetic changes
(mutations) at a high rate, which means that the cells in a tumor
that are resistant to a particular drug will survive and multiply. The
result is the re-growth of a tumor that is not sensitive to the
original drug.
Radiologists on the other hand attempt to deal with cancer using
radiation. This always has harmful effects on our body's ability to
control our health mainly our immune system. Like chemotherapy,
it actually causes other cancers.

HOW DOES CANCER STARTS?
Usually, many years before when you can feel a lump, or a doctor
can see it on a scan, the cells have started reproduce
uncontrollably. Each cancer starts with changes in one cell or a
small group of cells. The difference between normal cells and
cancer cells is that cancer cells seems to lose a number of vital
control systems, because some of the genes have been damaged or
lost. Scientists call this 'mutation'.
Genes and mutation
Genes are coded messages inside a cell that tells the cell how to
make many different proteins. One gene ‘codes’ for one protein.
Proteins are the building blocks that make up a cell. Some proteins
act as 'on and off switches' that help to control how a cell behaves.
For example, a hormone signal acts on a protein in or on the cell.
The protein then sends a signal down a chain of switches. The final

signal tells the cell to reproduce by dividing into two.
Mutation means that a gene has been damaged or lost. A mutation
may mean that too much protein is made or a protein is not made at
all.
Something that damages a cell and makes it more likely to be
cancerous is called a 'carcinogen'. For example, there are
carcinogens in cigarette smoke.
How mutations happen?
Mutations can happen by chance when a cell is reproducing. It is
not easy for a normal cell to turn into a cancer cell. There have to
be about half a dozen different mutations before this happens.
Cells often destroy themselves if they carry a mutation or the cells
might be recognized by the immune system as abnormal and
killed. This means most precancerous cells die before they can
cause cancer. Only a small number of the changes turn into a
cancer.
It can take a long time before enough mutations happen for a cell
to become cancerous. This is why most types of cancer are more
common in older people. There has been more time to be exposed

Our bodies are made of cells with an estimate that each of us has
on the order of 75 to 100 trillion cells that make up their body.
However, not all of those cells are what you would call, 'human'
cells (i.e. cells that contain your own genetic material). About 40
