Preply conducted extensive research

on students’ engagement and learning

habits. We found that it is important

to test students’ initial English level.

With a placement test, students can track

progress and communicate their learning

goals with tutors more easily.

Why we decided to develop a placement test

Our most recent study * shows:

Students that take a placement test are 1.5 times more likely to book a first lesson and have a 15% higher engagement rate.

+15% engagement

* Preply launched an experimental program called Preply Methodology which includes placement test.

Tutors that review the placement test results with the student and offer a learning plan based on the results get 2 times more students to buy a package after the first lesson.

test Vocabulary, Reading and Grammar.

The placement test will be sent to 50% of new students with English subject on the platform. We will measure results and if positive, we will scale it to 100% of the new students.

Tips on how to use the placement test to engagethe students further and make more money

+15% engagement

Once a new student books a lesson with you, it is important that you:

● Inform the student that they have a placement test included (if they do) and they should complete it before the first lesson. The reason for the assessment is that it will allow the tutor to understand the students’ language gaps and help them improve

● If the student has completed the placement test, make sure to review the results before the first lesson and provide feedback

● Based on the results of the placement test, prepare a lesson plan (5 lessons) that targets the language development areas shown in the test results. You can use the GSE Teacher Toolkit to help you develop topics

During the lesson:

● Understand students’ learning goals ● Walk the student through the test results, explain

the overall score (A1-C2) and what it means in terms of their language proficiency.

● Share the lesson plan you have prepared and discuss how it will help them improve

● Get feedback from the student on the lesson plan and next steps

● Ask the student about their learning schedule (it is recommended that they study at least twice a week)

● Agree on the next lesson (topics, date, time)
