The educational process at BITS aims at providing a holistic learning experience to its students. While the BITS model of education enriches their knowledge in various academic disciplines, the ambience at the cultur-ally vibrant campus and the plenty of opportunities they get both inside and outside their classrooms enable them to unveil their creative potential, hone their soft skills and mould them into desirable personalities.

BITS offers educational programmes at First degree, Higher degree and Doctoral levels. At the First Degree level the Institute offers B.E. (Hons.), BPharm. (Hons.), M.Sc. (Hons.), and M.Sc. (Tech) degrees while at the Higher Degree level it offers M.E., M.Pharm, MBA and MPH programmes. The normal input is 10+2 with Phys-ics, Chemistry and Mathematics with adequate profi-ciency in English for all the First Degree programmes and it is First Degree of BITS or its equivalent, for the

Higher Degree programmes.

The curriculum is highly demanding and requires a great deal of competence. Admissions to first degree pro-grams are made through a computer based online test conducted by BITS called BITSAT for all the three cam-puses of BITS in India. This year, more than 1 Lakh candidates all over India registered for BITSAT. Candi-dates are required to have a minimum of 80% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subjects. About 25 first rank students of different examination boards also join BITS every year, under ‘Direct admis-sion of Board Topers’ scheme. For admission to Higher Degree programmes, the Insti-tute conducts its own online tests and interviews to se-lect the best students from different Universities. Candi-dates should hold a high first class degree in order to appear in the admission test.

Dual Degree: Among the various flexibilities provided by the Institute’s educational structure, the dual degree scheme is very popular. Under Dual degree scheme it is possible for a student to work for and complete concur-rently two degrees within a reasonable period of time, eg. a degree in Science and a degree in Engineering. Industrial Linkages: All the students admitted get an opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge and skills to real life problems in work places through a unique component called Practice School (PS). For seven and half months, in two phases, the students work under the supervision of BITS faculty and industry experts in different Industries, National Laboratories, R&D cen-ters, and Financial Institutions. Students get an oppor-tunity to take up their PS in countries such as USA, It-aly, France and Singapore as well. The industries sup-port PS program by providing generous stipend and other amenities to the students. The program inculcates in them the team-playing skills, interpersonal skills, leadership qualities and the ability to meet deadlines. In a nutshell, this program prepares the BITS students to face challenges of professional world well before they graduate. Analytical & Soft Skills: The compulsory courses on Mathematics, Probability & Statistics, Technical Com-munication, Principles of Management etc. lay a strong foundation of analytical and soft skills amongst all the graduates of BITS irrespective of their degree.

All Round Development of Students

The Institute provides all the required facilities for sports and recreation to ensure overall development of every student. Students can join various clubs existing on the campus for example Music Club, Astronomy Club, Photography club, Poetry club, Dance club, Mime club, etc. Large number of students also take part in societal develop-ment works through various activity groups in campus. The Students' Activity Centre is the nerve centre of all student activities on the campus. A number of literary and social activities take place on the campus through out the year. Each year students organize National Level Sports meet, National Level Cultural meet, Management Conven-tion, Academic week etc. Students across various campuses of Indian Universities look forward to participate in some of these events at BITS like OASIS, QUARK, APOGEE, WAVES etc. BITS educational system puts ample opportunities for development of Soft Skill & Emotional Intelligence. Many courses have mandatory class room presentation and group discussion components which help improve communication skill. Many students learn foreign languages like German, French, Japanese etc. on campus.

Students avail campus placement during their last semester on campus before graduation. Out of the students graduating in a year, about 50% of students are available on campus in a given semester; the other 50% of students at that time will be in the Practice School stations. As a consequence, there are two placement sessions in a year. The first session is during August to November (in first semester) and the second session is during January to April (in second semester). Most of the companies send their expert teams twice in a year to meet all students of the final year batch. BITS has a remarkable placement record and most of the students have their careers charted out well before they complete graduation. More than 130 reputed companies conducted campus interviews of graduating stu-dents in 2008-2009. While most of the students will be graduating by the end of May/June, a few students will graduate by the end of December. There are no registration charges. Rooms with LCD projector and computer are provided for conducting pre-placement talks. Rooms for aptitude tests, group discussions and interviews are also made available. Accom-modation of visiting company executives can be arranged (on payment basis) at guest house within the campus at Pilani. As the city of Goa has fully developed hospitality infrastructure in place, the guest house on campus has limited accommodation.
