    13. PROBLEM TO BE ADDRESS:

A huge amount of pop corn are being imported from foreign countries specially India, which is beingsold in attractive (high ) price in the Nepalese market. A large amount of foreign currency is being used in

purchasing pop corn from other countries because there is no single variety developed and recommendedfor pop corn production in Nepal,. Similarly, Nepalese farmers have shown their interest in the production

of these crops. However, due to lack of suitable varieties, the production of pop corn in Nepal is limited. However there are few local land races (pop corn) are available in Nepal but they are very susceptible to

diseases as result their productivity is very low. In current situtation high yielding, tolerance to disease

and pest and good popping quality pop corn varieties are lacking in Nepal.

    14. REVIEW OF PAST WORK:

Palikhe (2000) evaluated twelve pop corn (locally collected and exotic) genotypes for popping quality

performance in 1998/99 at Lumle. Majhagaun Yellow and Amber popcorn produced highest popping

percentage (88.5%) followed by Yousufwala (87%) and Lumle yellow corn (85.5%) respectively.

Similarly in a preliminary study (in 1996), the exotic maize population Yousufwala has only goodpopping ability. This was the income generating, as well high value crop for the Nepalese farmers. In

Nepal, area under pop corn was less than field corn with a production of 1-1.5 t/ha in 2000. In NMRP,

Rampur, only the locally available six land races and two improved pop corn had been characterized for

their quantitative and qualitative traits in the past but the research work did not continued in previousyears. Nevertheless, in recent year pop corn as a source cash crop are produced near by semi-urban areas.

The research on pop corn is very limited. Except two varieties (Lumle Yellow popcorn and Lumle White

popcorn) developed by RARS, Lumle, there is no other varieties of pop corn in Nepal. So, adequate

information about this commodity under Nepalese condition is not available.

    15. JUSTIFICATION:

Pop corn is a traditional snacks of Nepalese peoples. The production, processing and sale ofpopcorn constitute additional source of income to farmers and traders. The popcorn production andprocessing is a profitable venture especially in a commercial scale.

This is the high value commodity and imported from other neighboring countries. Though, lowvolume of pop corn is produced in Nepal, very high proportion of it is being imported from othercountries mostly from India. Any suitable variety and production technology of pop corn would help togenerate cash for the farmers.

    24. ACTIVITIES-WISE METHODOLOGIES :

    1) Activity 1: Collection of local land races of pop corn from terai and mid hills

    Method:

Collection of pop corn local landraces from terai and mid hills will be done covering eastern, central, western, mid and far western hills. 25-50 districts will be included depending upon the

resources and manpower. Collection will be done in collaboration with DADOs, HMRP partners

and NARC stations. 1-2 Kgs seeds will be collected from each selected farmer and these seeds willbe kept in the cold storage from damaged and deterioration of seeds.

Activity 2: Evaluation of local pop corn germplasm under observation nursery, their selfing

    and formation of population

    Method:

The collected pop corn germplasm will be tested under observation nursery trials. Detailobservation will be taken for qualitative and quantitative traits. Landraces will be characterized

based on the yield, yield, maturity, grain color, disease and insect resistant and the agronomic

traits. The selfing of pop corn germplasm will be done and population will be formed based onmaturity group and grain yield

Activity 3: Multilocation testing of pop corn population under CVT and CFFT trials along

with insect and disease screening trials

The germplasm are continue maintain and developed variety will be tested on different eco-zone

for wide adoption, high yield and other desirable traits.

    Method 3.1. Coordinated varietal trials

The CVT trials will be carried out in targeted enviroments namely Kabre, and Pakhribas, Nepalgunj

and Parwanipur for Terai and Inner Terai environments. Evaluation will be done on the basis ofgrain yield, insect and disease incidence, ear and plant aspect. A separate insect and disease

    screening trials will be conducted.

Activity 3.2. Coordinated farmers field trials

The best selected pop corn varieties derived from CVT will be finally tested under CFFT trials.Evaluation will be done on the basis of grain yield, insect and disease incidence, ear and plant

aspect. A separate insect and disease screening trials will be conducted.

Monitoring and evaluation is the heart of any works. Therefore, a multidisciplinary team ofscientist including the local farmers will monitor and evaluate the experiment conducted at

    different locations and farmers field

Activity 4. Seed increase and improvement of pop corn population

    Method: Stratified mass selection

The seeds of promising pop corn varieties will be produced from breeder seed in the field with at least

200 m isolation from other varieties of maize. Time isolation will also be considered where the spaceisolation is not possible. Field will be prepared by 2-3 cross ploughing and harrowing. Fertilizer will

be applied at the rate of 120:60:40 kg NPK/ha. Seed rate will be 15 kg per ha.Two times weeding and

earthing up will be done. Nitrogenous fertilizer will be applied at three split doses. Irrigation will bedone three times. Much care will be given before and at the time of flowering. Tall and dwarf plants

will be detasseled. Too early and late flowering plants will also be detasseled. Diseased plant will be

removed from the field. Off-type plants will be removed. The whole plot will be divided into small

grids and plant selection will be done from grids. Selection of best plants will be done within grids notamong the grids. Plant with same maturity and desirable ear and plant height will be selected. Care

will be taken for tight husk while selecting ears. Harvesting will be done after attainment of full

maturity. Care will be given to avoid mixing of other maize varieties. Dehusking, drying and shelling

will be done without making any sign of damage on the seed. Drying will be done until the moistureof maize seed will fall down to 10-12%. Processing will be done with a grader machine. Seed

treatment will be done with a seed treater drum. Packaging will be done in a labeled bag. Then, storing of bags will be done in a proper godown.

Activity 5. Variety release proposal preparation and submission

    Method:

A proposal will be prepared and submitted to the NSB for release of at least 1 Pop corn variety foreach terai/inner terai and 1 pop corn synthetic variety for mid hill. Proposals will be prepared and

submitted to National Seed Board (NSB) for release of varieties. We will defend the proposal at

the technical sub-committee and if the technical committee is satisfied with our claim andpresentation, then the technical committee will forward this proposal to the national variety release

committee for final approval and notification.
