accused of fai l ing to keep up with the l a rges t developments in elei i ronies Two new mach ines used by the Aerology Section of the .has-fcantro! tower will be wi tness to t h a t fac t .

T H E FACSIMILE MACHINE Made by the Times Facs imi le Corporat ion owned by t h e >ew York

times . the Facs imile m a c h i n e is the latest word in long r a n g e m a ; production I t produces the la tes t wea the r m a p s by uaing radio waTe broadcast f rom Washington . D. C.. Fairf ie ld . California, and Laguardn . Fielc in New York.

The idea behind the set is simple, a*- is the machine u s e li A bel. nn,~s and the m a s supervis ing t h t set' picks np the ear -phones . Tht broadcast ing s ta t ion tel ls h im what a r ea they a r e mapping, a n d if tht char t is needed by Aerology for thei r use. the set is turned on. 1! the data is not requi red , the ma-chine is s imply left off.

The Facs imi le machine whict cost the M " " " " (^irps approxi-mately Sl250. resembles a slightly complicated radio set and operates on 24&-2S5 volts of direct curpen:

A flick of a couple of switches, a little tun ing in and the cha r t -begins to be formed on t h e reoearer

At the sending s ta t ion . **"> la tes t weather char t , showing cold f ron t s , low p re s su re a reas , s torn. a reas , etc.. is wrapped a round a sending d rum. As the d rum ro-ta tes . it sends out radio w a v e s ti-the receiving set. The receiver is much like the t r a n s m i t t e r , only with each rota t ion ef i ts d rum which is synchronized with th< sender a facsimil ie . or copy of the map . is reproduced

On the receiving end. a very thin piece of pape r is backed by a gra-phite coat ing and wrapped a round the drum. As the waves come th rough , the electr ical impulses shoot th rough the s ty lus and b u m through the covering, showing the g raph i t e in back.

When the map is finally com-pleted. the chart is removed and the mach ine is feady for the next one. This mach ine can product f rom 40 to 50 m a p s a day

THE CEILIOHETEK The ceil iometer is a m a c h u *

used to measu re the height anu type of cloud format ions . In o ther words , it m e a s u r e s the '•ceiling This machine consists of two p a r t s t h e pro jec tor and detector .

The pro jec tor , which is located ^rf t h e island in the cen te r of tht r u n w a y s , shoots a beam of modu-lated light s t ra ight up against tht cloud base. This fo rms one leg o:

t r iangle Thus the beam is "fixed " T h e h igher the cloud, tbe wide: will be the spot where the bean, hits.

The detec tor , located outside tht lower, consis ts of a search l igb ' a r r a n g e m e n t which moves cp and down at a n ine ty degree angle 1' shoots out an ul t ra-violet r ay . and when th i s touches the projected light, it r eg i s te r s on a char t .

The detector beam as s tar ted f rom a 9i< degree angle, and is s ta r ted downward unt i l it tonches t h r o u t e r f r inge of the projected light against the cloud. When th i s happens , the mach ine au toma t ; cally s t a r t s to record , and con-tinue:- until the ultra-violet r a y s passes th rough the pro jec tor light completely By nse of t r igonome t ry . tbe height of the cloud bast is fignred Tak ing the angle of tht detector r ay . the distance between the pro jec tor and detec tor a n r us ing a m a t h tabic , t h t opera tor is able to- figure out the height Measurements nan be ob ained every six minu te s when the m a c h n v is in au tomat ic operat ion

Thus , with the uae of t b e latest serological developments . Marin*-aviation is being m a d e m o r e sa fe for t h e men who fly t h e "rron-hrrds."
