Concept of reading.y Reading is a means of language acquisition, of 

communication, and of sharing information and ideas.

y Like all language, it is a complex interaction betweenthe text and the reader which is shaped by the readersprior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and languagecommunity which is culturally and socially situated.

The reading process requires continuous practices,development, and refinement.

driven literacy programs in the United States

y

 According to the first definition, learning to read meanslearning to pronounce words.

y  According to the second definition, learning to readmeans learning to identify words and get their meaning.

y

 According to the third definition, learning to readmeans learning to bring meaning to a text in order to getmeaning from it.

(Anderson et al., 1985).y Reading is the process of constructing meaning from

 written texts.

y It is a complex skill requiring the coordination of anumber of interrelated sources of information.

Reading is the process of constructing meaning throughthe dynamic interaction among:

(1) the readers existing knowledge;

(2) the information suggested by the text being read

(3) the context of the reading situation

Birkley (1970)y Defines reading as :

the recognition and perception of language structures

as wholes in order to comprehend both the surface anddeep meaning which these structures communicate.

Pang et al. (2003: 6 )y states that reading is a complex activity that involves

both perception and thought.

y It consists of two related processes:  Word recognition refers to the process of perceiving how

 written symbols correspond to ones spoken language.

Comprehension is the process of making sense of words,

sentences and connected text.
