PK-2 Visual Arts Task: In this week’s lesson you will design and create a character using found materials. Look at the images above. What do you think is going on in the pictures? What materials are they made of? RECYCLED MATERIALS SCULPTURE DESIGN PROCESS: 1. Collect Materials: Walk around your household or outside and start collecting interesting objects that could be recycled or reused in your sculpture. 2. Imagine: What is the name of your character? Does she or he have any powers or special abilities? 3. Experiment: Try drawing your character before you put it together. Experiment with how you might use different materials for different parts of your character. 4. Create: Gather your materials and create your character. Think about how you will attach all the different pieces together. 5. Refine & Reflect: Share your creation and reflect on the questions at the bottom of the page with someone in your household. MATERIAL OPTIONS: cardboard, paper towel tubes, pop bottles or water bottles, tape, glue, buttons, string, cups, recycled jars or tubs, or anything else that is interesting to you! If you have a “junk drawer” in your house, this is a great place to start your search! REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What did you create? What problem does your machine solve? What do you like about your artwork? What would you change about your machine? Made by Joey Russo (2 nd Grade) Made by Camilla Coleman (2 nd Grade)

Helping Your Child Get Ready for Kindergarten Parent and Child Together Time (PACT time) Tip for Home

*

* The number symbol means this activity helps children meet our preschool number concepts/operations goal.

Parents are partners! Please share your observations of your child’s learning and development with us.

1,2,3 Count With Me!

• Saying the numbers in order is called rote counting and is just one of the math

skills we work on in preschool.

• Help your child understand that when he/she counts, each number stands for one thing,

by pointing to each item as you count. For example, if are counting out 5 grapes, as you

say each number you point to a grape. This kind of counting is called “one-to-one

correspondence” and is an important preschool math skill.

• Using math words like some, more, less, bigger, smaller, part, and whole will also

help your child start to think and learn early math concepts.

• Talking and thinking about numbers and quantity as a regular part of your day is a great

way for kids to practice math. Use number words when you talk to your child “I need

three more spoons on the table” or “Everyone can have two cookies!”

Use the below lines for your child to practice writing their name. Children are at varying levels

with writing and that is perfectly okay. To help your child be successful you may help by having

your child trace their name that you have written, copy their name from a sample, hold their hand

as they write and help form letters, or your child may be able to write it independently.

Using simple Yoga poses and breathing to help your child calm their body.

Brain research shows us that movement and breathing exercises can relieve stress and help children calm down.

Our bodies are designed to move-but we sometimes spend a lot of time sitting still in front of the television and

computer screen. Movement can be exciting-running, jumping, climbing, dancing; but certain kinds of

movement, like yoga can also help children learn to control their bodies to calm down. Both kinds of movement

are great for helping kids feel good! Don't worry if your family hasn't tried yoga before. Your child will feed off

your enthusiasm when you introduce this yoga-pose sequence on the front.

• Explain that it's good for their brain. Introduce the "Move to Calm" strategy when you are both in a good

mood. You might find yourself practicing the yoga pose sequence to manage your own emotions, too!

• Focus on using movement to invite calm, and don't worry about practicing perfect poses.

• Make sure that your child has enough space to practice the poses so that they aren't bumping heads or

stubbing toes. And make sure that they are safe with their bodies.

• Have them focus on gentle movement that feels comfortable. This process will help to increase their body

awareness, too.

• As your child goes through the flow of these five yoga poses, s/he can pretend to be a surfer, tree, skier, dog,

and owl. Using play and pretend skills will help your child stay focused and make the activity fun.

•Once s/he is comfortable with the yoga-pose sequence, s/he can take a deep breath in and a deep breath out

during each pose, to further help to calm his or her body and mind .

persona a lado.

Mindfulness means

paying full attention to

something. It means slowing

down to really notice what

you're doing. Being

mindful is the opposite of

rushing or multitasking.

When you're mindful,

you're taking your time.

You're focusing in a relaxed,

easy way.

Use Square Breathing as

one strategy to focus on

your breathing and be more

mindful throughout your

day.
