This is a technique of foreshadowing in which the author is preparing hisreaders for the life to come for Bruno (and perhaps his family). For Bruno, hisnormalcy will be taken away from him and in its place something lessoptimistic is taking over.
*At this point time, there is not much to say about what is taking over. This,however, will be seen clearer as the novel progresses.
