Chapter 1: ‘Bruno Makes a Discovery’1. Bruno discovered that his family had to move out of their home in Berlin due

to his father’s work.

3. Bruno’s parents are arguing about the move from Berlin because it is very sudden and so many things are uncertain, such as the time period (this is inferred from chapter 3)

Chapter 2: ‘The New House’1. The atmosphere in the new house:

- Sense of lifelessness with no connection to the outside world- Stifling because to Bruno it is small and there are still places in and

around the house that he cannot venture to- In Bruno’s own owrds : empty and cold

2. On page 18, a young German soldier emerges from Father’s room.Maria seems very tensed up and frightened as she does not even dare lookat him despite him being a young man.

Chapter 3: ‘ The Hopeless Case’1. Gretel get the phrase ‘foreseeable future’ from her father.

Gretel and Bruno think it means a short period of time, of perhaps weeks or a month.It is an ironical use of phrase because Father and the children have completely different perceptions of it. For Father, it would mean a considerable period of time but for the children, it is a short time period where they could see the end of their time in Out-With.

2. The other children whom Bruno refers to lived beyond the forest of Out-With.

Gretel had not seen them before Bruno because they could only be seen from the window in his room.
