The Payne, or The Painsas Pixie like to call them,

are awful stepsisters,Sophie and Hetty Payne.They drove her up thewall so much that Pixiewas almost willing to give

up spending weekendswith her father at theirhouse.

Their mother Lucy was more

tolerable. She fussed overPixie when she arrived andthen tended to lose track ofPixie. Pixie would retreat to

her room upstairs and onlycome for down for meals or ifshe was called.

However,everything

changed oneday.Sophie andHetty had a hugestand-up fightwhich resulted inHetty moving outof her sistersroom into Pixies.

Lucy and Dad didnt think Pixie d mind since Pixie was

there only a few days each month . Pixie agreed to

share her room with Hetty because she didnt want toseem petty and mean

Pixie felt worst about Hetty who was

nearer my age but very different from her.

Hetty was everyones darling and always

being praised for her grades and her good

manners and way with animals.

Everything she did annoyed Pixie .

So Pixie hatched a plot to get Hetty out

of her room. Pixies first step was try a

haunting. She made little scratching

noises one night ,and surreptitiously

opened the windows the next morning the

room was icy cold, like a ghost had justvisited. Pixie told Hetty gruesome tale

but unfortunately , Hetty cottoned on

and grinned at her as if Pixie was

brilliant.

Pixie decided to try a

different tack the next day.

Pixie waited till she was

engrossed in her homeworkbefore interrupting her to ask

her to explain some maths.

Hetty went through every

problem so thoroughly that

Pixie even improve her

marks at week. However,

Pixie couldnt annoy her

enough to get her out of

Pixies room.

Finally, Pixie resorted to the

semi-silent treatment, hoping

that shed get fed up and stormback to her sister. Pixie almost

right. Although Hetty left the

room, she went directly to her

mother. Lucy showed up

straight away and although she

was mild and friendly as usual,Pixie could tell that it mattered

to her. With a jolt, Pixie

realised it was a serious matter

for me too. Pixie was sick of

bitting my tougue and hiding

my feelings.

Lucy ask if there was a

problem Hetty and Pixie.

Pixie warily denied it at first

, then told her that Pixiesdidint like l sharing her

room with someone who

wasnt family. She insisted

that Hetty was family but

Pixie pointed out that Hetty

wasnt part of her (Pixies)family. Lucy and Dad had

chosen each other but Hetty

and Pixie hadt been given

a choice, and they were

expected to pretend to get

along.

Pixie. She added thats

upset. Suddenly Dad peered

round the door, then closed

the door again. He hadobviously sensed there was

a problem but rather than

come in and help sort things

out, he had decided as usual

to stay safely out of thing.

Lucy retorted that she hadnt

Pixie. She added thats

Pixies dad hadnt chosenSophie and Hetty either but

That didnt surprise themalthough Lucy was really

irritated that Dad was

leaving it all to her, the

Wicked Stepmother.

Pixie bitterly replied that it

was a better than being astepmother or stepsister.

Lucy lost her temper and

told her that Pixie didnt

behave like Pixie was part

of the family.

It was Lucys turn to shout angrily

at Pixie. She loathed being cast as

the Wicked Stepmother, andhated how Pixies mum didnt

give her any support and how

Dad always pretended kept

everything was fine.

Nevertheless, she kept on trying

because this was her home and

her family. She was sobbing and

Pixie started crying too, they

hugged each other tightly.

Dad poked his head round the

door but Lucy coldly asked him to

go away. Pixie felt the same. Dad

could have make things much

easier for all of them and it was

selfish of him not to have made

the effort.

Lucy and Pixie sat with their arms round each other. Pixie told

Lucy she wouldnt want to be a stepmother and she told her

that she wouldnt want to be a stepdaughter either.Nonetheless, most people managed somehow, she added with

a shrug. Pixie tearfully confessed that she didnt really hate

Lucys house after all. It was Hettys teasing and things like

which made Pixie want to leave. Lucy was baffled when she

realised how Pixie hated her name, and she told Pixie that her

parents had chosen a lovely name for Pixie.So, because Lucy had said something nice about Mum and

Dad, their row ended peaceably, with no ill feelings between

them. Pixie dried her tears and told Lucy that Pixie didnt mind

sharing her room, but she insisted that they drag Hettys bed

back to her sister room.

Now, Pixie dont pretend

anymore and everyone knows

how Pixie feel and Pixie know

how feel. Theyre managingbetter although Pixie still think

that Hettys a pain and Sophie

still get son her nerves. Lucy

stopped Hetty from yelling

Priscilla up the stair and so Pixie

try to be more sociable and jointhe family downstairs. Pixie even

get some help with her

homework.

In return, Pixie frighten Hetty out of her wits

with her ghost stories. After listening to Pixies

stories, Hetty goes back to her room but only

if Sophie is there. If Sophie is out, Hets and

Pixie drag her mattress to my room. Dad

doesnt understand why they dont just leave

the mattress on Pixies floor, but they know

better. Although they get along a bit better

now, Hetty and Pixie dont want to push their

luck.
