Rev. J Bret MetcalfeDistrict Superintendent
We are now in full swing of another year. For some, we are tryingto remember to write 2015 on checks, notes, etc. instead of having toscratch out 2014. Some say a new year is like a new lease on life. Theissues of last year somehow fade to the back and a new world awaits. There are probably some things you hope to forget, while some are hopingto remember. Some say a new year is like a new page of history waitingto be written. What will your pages say? For some major changes willoccur; new jobs, new families, new car, new house, and the list is endless. What history will be recorded about you?
When you look back to last year, was there anything that happenedthat you wished would not have happened? If you could do it all over
again, what would you change? What would you like to see continue? For some of youcommitments were made to Christ and for others, recommitments. How are those going foryou? Have you found it tough to keep going, or to keep your commitment fresh? Maybe forsome others of you, you continue to struggle because youare afraid of what you might lose. Jesus said, “If anyonewould come after me, let him deny himself and take up hiscross and follow me. For whoever would save his life willlose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole worldbut loses his soul? Or what shall a man give in return forhis soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26, ESV)
What will the Lamb’s Book of Life record aboutyou? What will you do this year to impact those aroundyou for Christ? To follow after Christ is a huge undertakingthat will require your whole life. Are you willing to giveup your life for the sake of those with whom you haveinfluence over? Are you willing to lose your life for Hissake? If you have been struggling maybe it is time for youto let the Lord write a new page in your history this year.

OINTMENT, GAUZE, AND SLINGS NEEDS ON THE FIELD
Ointment, gauze, and arm slings are just a few of the items KudjipNazarene Hospital needs to keep their medical supply room stocked.Missionary Judy Bennett says that there are times when the needs ofthe Papua New Guinea (PNG) people they serve, surpass the amountand types of supplies they have.
This would make a great project for a church of any size to engagetheir people in helping Nazarene missionaries in their work in PNG.
Medical Supply Needs - December 2014· T-BAGS - Packed in a 1-gallon zip lock: 1 large bottle of Tylenol, bandage tape, antibacterial
ointment, gauze (4x4) and Sling (arm)· Tylenol Drive - Bring a “Costco or Sam’s Club” size bottle of Tylenol to church to ship to Kudjip
Nazarene Hospital· Chemo for Kids - Many times the cost of the chemotherapy drugs for children is above what the
family can pay. Receiving an offering and sending it to Kudjip Hospital helps compensatefor the shortfall.
· Prescription Bottles - Save empty prescription bottles, re-label them with a stick-on new labelthat says “Rx for Healing.”
· Beanie Babies and Hot Wheel Cars - The doctors, nurses, and staff at Kudjip hand these out atChristmas and other times. The lab gives them to the children who need blood drawn.
· Thermometers - they need to have a Celsius reading· Stethoscopes - make sure they are quality ones· Hydrogen Peroxide· Homemade sanitary napkins and laundry soap - The hospital has female patients who have
cervical cancer and need washable pads and soap· Washcloths· Inspirational Bookmarks
PLEASE NOTE: Kudjip does not have a need for rolled bandages. They currently have several groups supplying these.
Shipping Options: Items collected can be shipped in one of two ways:1. Directly to Hospital: 2. Oregon, USA: Contact Judy Bennett at
Kudjip Nazarene Hospital or [email protected] and ask forBox 456 Mt Hagen WHP instructions and the address in OregonPapua New Guinea where you can ship your items. There is an
gentleman there who makes large shipmentsto Kudjip three times per year and caninclude your donation in with the largershipment.
Ebola – Five W ays to Pray
The following are five basic ways our leaderson the Africa Region encourage us to pray for thepeople affected by the Ebola crisis: 1. Fear: Pray for the Lord to bind the spirit offear that is seizing the hearts of people in Liberia,Sierra Leone, and Guinea Conakry and to releaseHis peace. 2. Rejection: Pray for the people who are rejectedbecause of Ebola, that the Lord may give a heart ofcompassion. 3. Wisdom: Pray that the Lord may grant wisdomto the government authorities in their decisions soas to contain Ebola. 4. Hope: Pray for the Lord to give constant hopeto His people (His Church) in this time of despairso that they have boldness to continue to intercedefor their nation and encourage the population. 5. God’s Glory: Pray for the solution and thatthe stopping of Ebola comes from God and no oneelse so that He will get all the glory. To read storiesof survival and revival occurring in West Africa inthe face of this devastating disease, go to the AfricaRegion’s website.

Greetings. I hope you had a good Christmasand a happy New Year’s. I have asked Rev. MarkErskine if he would write an article about reportinglocal church statistics to our district. The reason Iwanted Mark to talk about this is because ourdenomination is asking each local church to includetheir responsibility list number along with our otherattendance statistics each month. Mark explains itin his article.
I want to thank you for your cooperation inreporting. In December, 49 of 82 churches reportedfor a total of 60% reporting.
Sunday School – 2,778Morning Worship – 4,378Responsibility List– 8,898I want to challenge all of the churches on our
Pittsburgh District to report their January statistics.Let’s see if we can reach Mark’s goal of 70%reporting.
May God richly bless your ministry as youminister and reach people for Christ.

Statistics, numbers, and lists are boring, mundane and just a pain to deal with unless you are anauditor, treasure, math teacher, or accountant. Unless you love numbers you hate putting reports full ofnumbers and statistics. I’m not going to bore you with the importance of numbers because, honestly, I’mjust not that into numbers. God didn’t call me to count and report the count, he called me to ministry. Can I get a big “Amen” from all the pastors?
God called me to ministry and gave me a responsibility to care for the people of His church and thecommunity where I serve! I am responsible to minister to them and pray for them, preach to them, teachthem and there is a passion from God that drives that responsibility. I sense this deep in my spirit. I workhard at reaching my community and the people of His church. Most of the time, nobody but God seeswhen I can’t sleep because I’m deeply concerned about a situation in my congregation or community;however, I don’t care that nobody sees because I’m driven by the Spirit of God and this sense ofresponsibility to do His work.
The squeaky wheel always gets the most attention and so I work and pray with a community familythis week and a church family next week, and so the days of ministry pass. Two months later I thinkabout the community family I worked with and wonder how they are doing, but because I hate numbersand lists I can’t reach them because I wasn’t responsible to get that information. If I had a “magical list”to record people’s contact information I would call it a RESPONSIBILITY LIST. On this list I willrecord contact information for all those who: 1) Regularly attend, 2) Church Members both active andinactive and 3) SDMI classes (including small groups, and nursing homes, etc...). If I keep this listcurrent, it “magically” puts me in position to better carry out my responsibility to God to minister to mycommunity and church. (For a more detailed description of the responsibility list, see manual pages 334-335 – 812 SDMI)
If I take the time to work this “magical list”, the mathematical probability of the people I ministerto feeling loved and cared for greatly increases. When people feel loved and cared for, the kingdom ofGod advances. I should care for this “magical” responsibility list by keeping it up to date. I will needhelp with this, because many people change cell numbers and email addresses frequently. I will ask thosewho teach SDMI classes to get current contact information from their students. I will ask greeters to besure and get contact information from attenders. I will update my church membership to correspond withcurrent active and inactive members. I have a great idea! It is a new year, how about I update everyone’scontact information by placing a short form to fill out in the bulletin and have everyone drop it in theoffering plate. My magical responsibility list will then have new life and people will feel loved and caredfor as I use this list to stay connected with them. This responsibility list is an amazing tool. I wish I couldtell somebody about it! I wonder who would be interested?

November 19, 2014 Greetings and Good News! There is a new ministry opening up near Somerset, PA, called Next Day Ministries. Bob Walters
and Scott Rush are the two dedicated men who are stepping out in faith to start it. Next Day Ministriesis a Christ-based group-home addiction recovery ministry. Next Day Ministries will house up to 24 menwhile they recover. The foundation of their recovery will be Bible-based discipleship and a Christiantwelve-step program.
This program is modeled after two existing paradigms: His Way in Alabama (www.hiswayinc.org)and Heartland Ranch in Missouri (www.heartland-ministries.org). Next Day Ministries is similar to thebusiness models of these programs in that all are Christ-centered, using the 12-step program on therecovery side. Through life skills classes, all of these programs teach their residents how to once againbe productive citizens. The residents work during the program, as well.
Next Day Ministries’ initial program will last six months. The first three weeks will be spent in thehouse, learning about Jesus Christ through Bible studies, basic life skills classes and AA/NA meetingsusing the 12-step principles. Included in the life skills classes will be topics such as resume writing, money handling, job interviewing, conflict resolution, etc. In the fourth week, the guys will begin towork at one of Next Day Ministries’ businesses: a dairy farm, an automotive shop or a thrift store. Theywill earn a paycheck for their work, and that money will then be used to pay the participants’ programfees.
At the end of six months, if a resident has completed all assignments - including staying clean theentire time - he will graduate from the program. At that point, he will have the choice to stay on or to goout on his own while continuing contact with program leaders. If he chooses to stay in the program foranother six months, he will take on more of a mentor role for the new participants just starting theprogram. He will begin leading Bible studies and/or classes, if he is at a point to do so. This opportunityto serve will initiate one very important aspect of his recovery - giving back.
At the end of the second six months, each participant will be evaluated based on his performancethus far in the program. If he so desires, and if there is a Supervisor/manager spot open at one of thebusinesses, there will be a conversation with him about staying on with the program in that capacity. Ifhe chooses to go out on his own, he will have learned the skills to not only remain sober, but also tobecome - and remain - a productive citizen in whatever residential community he chooses.
Toward the end of the program, if the participant’s desire is to return to the community at large, contact will be initiated with available resources in the area in which he intends to live. The goal will beto ensure that each New Day Ministries’ graduate will enter and remain in the neighborhood of his choicewith continuing sobriety, gainful employment, a roof over his head and transportation.
The program will use the Life Recovery Bible and its corresponding workbook for the Biblestudies. For the money handling classes, they will be using the principles taught by a well-known Christianfinancial advisor who is also host of his own radio show.
This information is presented with the goal of introducing you to New Day Ministries and providingthe opportunity for you to participate and pray. The founders of this worthy program are trusting God toprovide the tangible needs of establishing this ministry, as well as funding through one-time donationsand ongoing financial commitments. If you have any questions, if you feel God leading you to contributein some way, or if you would like someone to come to your church or organization to present the program, please contact me at [email protected], (814) 395-3639 or (814) 233-8998.
Thank you for your interest in New Day Ministries and for obeying, should God call you to participatein some way. In Christ, Ken Schweter
