Words of wisdom from Dr. Kevin Elko, and no truer words spoken. I cher-ish the memories I have created with my own children and it is my hope that, as they grow and begin to find their own way, they will reflect on their childhood with love and adoration.

There are no holds barred when it comes to creating your own private place to get away. It essentially boils down to what intrigues us the most. Dr. Elko has fashioned his family’s own private getaway, mere steps from the back door of his Nevillewood home. It is a one-of-a-kind tree house and the talk of the neighborhood. Children and adults alike have strolled by to see the formation first hand, and we did not want to pass up the opportunity to show it to you.

Our other homeowners featured in this issue should also be com-mended for unique creativity. A Fox Chapel couple was gracious enough to open the doors to their new, Tuscan-inspired home. While it is grand enough to showcase a prized collection of Italian Renaissance art, it’s also comfortable enough to host intimate family gatherings during the holidays. We’re equally excited about the kitchen you see featured on the cover. Situated inside a Center Township home, what was once a dated kitchen has been transformed into a modern culinary marvel packed with eye-catching materials.

Check out our website, Housetrends.com, for bonus photos of the homes featured in this issue. We would love to hear from you! Share your thoughts and home and garden ideas with us on our Housetrends Pittsburgh Facebook page.

Sincerely,

Bill Slattery and the Housetrends staff

I just want them to look back and remember the wonderful times we spent together.

The Don’s Appliance legacy began in 1971, when Don Hillebrand, a Maytag repairman, opened up the

first of the family’s appliance retail shops in Upper St. Clair. The very small storefront was expanded mul-

tiple times in the 70’s and 80’s. In 1980, Don’s expanded, opening a second store in Washington County

and relocated to their current location in 2003, which has doubled in space since then. In 2006, the Baum

Boulevard location was opened to service those in the Eastern part of the city.

If you are looking for personal service and top of the line appliances, look no further than Don’s. Owned

and operated by the Hillebrand family for forty years, Don’s prides itself on being the most comprehensive

distributor of premier appliances and exceptional service in the tri-state area.

Don’s offers more than just appliances, though. They are a full parts, service, delivery, and installation

operation. They service every appliance that they sell and even offer cabinetry modification.

The state-of-the-art showroom is more like an inspiration center where customers not only come to

purchase appliances, but to get ideas for their own homes. Don’s products are presented in a design like

setting with tile flooring and backsplash, granite countertops, paint schemes, and wood paneling options

shown on the appliances.

“The impact that being a family run business has on a customer is that they walk into the showroom

and have owner interaction on a non-stop basis,” says Matt Hillebrand. “Our showrooms are second to

none. We have three national appliance showrooms inside of Don’s – we are very proud of that, we’ll put

our showrooms up against anyone nationally.”

Here is to forty more wonderful years at Don’s Appliances!

Fox Chapel house has an open door policy for family and friends

By Alison Bour | Photos by Craig Thompson

Take just one look at this new Fox Chapel home and a series of descriptive words come to mind: awe-

inspiring, spectacular, amazing and distinguished are just a few. F Upon first glance, guests notice the

elegant fabrics and furnishings, the Italian Renaissance art and the player piano that adorns the luxurious

entry. But these superlatives merely scratch the surface of what this house really means to its owners.

No Reservations

Page 22: Pittsburgh Housetrends

Comfort and eleganceThe homeowners say their goal was to create the best of both worlds: a house that stuns its visitors, yet invites them to mean-der without reservation and sit without asking. They enlisted the help of Roy Penner, owner of Penner & Associates Architects and Jon Alan Delach, senior designer with Today’s Home, to help bring their vision to life. “I call it the big, little house,” says Delach. “When you see it, you’re blown away. But once you experience it, you’re comfortable. I love the grand scale of the entry, but people want to just hang out there. They don’t feel intimidated.”

The home’s story begins with a less-than-perfect lot, explains

22 housetrends.com

A fountain surrounded by flowers adds a colorful touch to the motor

court. OPENING SPREAD: The elegant fireplace stands out against

the light color scheme. A curved staircase and player piano greet guests as they enter the arched

front door.

Penner. The homeowner approached him after the purchase of the land: its challenges include one side that butted up against a traffic-filled street and a steep slope on the other.

The design of the house required Penner to peer into his archi-tectural bag of tricks and pull out his best ideas. Since the home-owners knew their new house would be both a place to entertain and the last they would build, the busy street was an appropriate backdrop for a service court supporting a variety of uses. “Part of the motor court is a drop-off that leads to a mudroom. It’s adja-cent to a separate caregiver apartment and suite of rooms so the

homeowners can live in the house forever,” Penner says, adding that his plan also called for an elevator.

The same area provides party caterers a convenient and unas-suming entrance, with easy access to a pantry that doubles as a fully functioning kitchen. On the opposite side of the exterior, all the living spaces overlook private views, while the steep slope served as a way to offer calm scenery from both the upper and lower patios; it also gives the stone and brick home a nestled appearance. “The living spaces are shielded from the cars and road on the opposite side,” stresses Penner.

24 housetrends.com

Change of paceThe homeowners, who moved from a French country, framed house built in 1826, desired modern features in their new home. “We wanted a nice kitchen and hearth room,” the wife says. “And we wanted a party home. At Christmas, we entertain 100 to 150 people.”

Penner designed a lower level patio that converts into a banquet space thanks to vinyl, palladium-style windows that can be installed during colder months. “It looks perfect. It has heat in the ceiling so we can use it most of the year,” the homeowner explains.

They also wanted a first floor master suite and an open floor plan. Penner created a footprint that integrates all the living spaces: the entrance, owner’s suite, living room, kitchen and full bar, as well as the hearth, dining and breakfast rooms. “All these rooms open to the upper terrace,” he says.

Archways, including those offering a view of the homeowners’ second floor art collection, give guests the experience of an open yet intimate Tuscan interior.

With regards to the master suite, Penner encouraged the homeowners to incorporate an oversized closet and dressing room, rather than a larger, traditional bedroom that includes a walkin closet. The end result is actually a suite of rooms that features barrelvaulted ceilings in its hallway. Penner’s unique design called for the sleeping space to remain private.

Updated Tuscan interiorIt was then Delach’s job to create a Tuscan feel throughout the home. “It used to be known as Mediterranean, during the old avocado and terra cotta days,” he says. “It’s the same idea recycled, but it’s more sophisticated.”

Delach and the homeowners easily eliminated both terra cotta as a flowthrough color, as well as potentially overpowering aged walls. Instead, after falling in love with the entry’s marble floor

continued >

ing, they sought the best way to pick up on its influence, which they did with SherwinWilliams’ Viva Gold paint that travels throughout the first level and offers a toneddown, less primitive Tuscan atmosphere. “By sticking with one tonal palette, you can incorporate more colors,” explains Delach.

To ground the bold wall color, Delach chose browns, as well as honey, gold and umber highlights. While many of the accent pieces fit within specific Tuscan styling, the homeowners found one Chinesestyle, eightfoot vase that sits in the hearth room, and discovered some of the chandeliers online.

Delach, who decorated the houses of former Pittsburgh Steelers’ coach Bill Cowher, and some of the team’s players, also strives to make sure the right furniture and flooring is chosen for the scale of the house. “It’s a pet peeve of mine. Your furniture needs to fit your house.”

ABOVE: Reminiscent of an old-fashioned pub, the bar is the perfect spot to entertain guests.

020-028 nFEA NoReservations.indd 27 10/27/11 8:56:59 AM

Page 28: Pittsburgh Housetrends

28 housetrends.com

While the clouds in the master bathroom were simply “something fun,” Delach says he chose brown for the color of the rug that leads downstairs so it would welcome peo-ple to the warmer tones of that level.

Fun and gamesTwo changes were added late in the game. After the homeowner purchased a

virtual golf system, a lower level room was allocated for it, as was a hallway that serves as a putting green.

A bonus room, plus an adjacent bedroom, was also created for the couple’s three grandchildren. “The kids can destroy it and have fun,” the wife says. “It’s their own private suite.”

The owners say the home turned out even better than they dreamed. Offering a dramatic first impression, the home wel-comes all who enter, and beckons them to sit down and stay a while.

11-year-old Claire Elko and her brother, 9-year-old Jared, have a private escape they can visit whenever they desire. Tucked into a hillside overlooking a nature preserve and meandering stream, this is where they can let their imaginations run wild. For the children, it is a place to play and experience the wonders of being young. But for their father, it is a place that he hopes will lead to a lifetime of wonderful memories.

Backyard excursionsClaire and Jared’s father, Dr. Kevin Elko, says the idea to build a tree house behind their Nevillewood home grew from his desire to create a happy environment for his entire family. “I’m a dad, this is what my life is all about,” he says. “My dad passed away a few years ago, and when I look back I remember those great things we did together. He took me to ballgames and taught me how to fish. This is what I want my children to experience.”

Dr. Elko and his wife, Karen, thought a tree house would be the perfect place for their family to create memories together.

They hired Dave Voelker, owner of Dave Voelker Design and Construction, to build the tree house. “Kevin met with me and explained the concept,” Voelker says. “It sounded like a unique challenge and it was virtually impossible to say no.”

The roughly 11x11-foot house, com-prised of cedar, sits atop 8-foot timbers and resides at the base of a 200-foot embankment behind the Elkos’ home. The exterior is painted in gray and dark green tones. After one year or so, the raw cedar portions of the house will season and take on a gray hue of its own. “This is when the whole project will come togeth-er,” Voelker says. “We selected these col-ors and materials so the house would blend into the landscape.”

Inside, the 13-foot ceiling makes way for two loft bunk beds, wood walls covered in a polyurethane coating to withstand any child activities, windows and two sets of patio doors that lead to an expansive deck. “When the doors are opened on both sides it makes the whole floor plan three times as large,” Voelker says, also adding that the house is fully insulated and could be heated in the future.

A rock-climbing wall adds visual inter-est to the exterior, as well as a fun way for Claire, Jared and their friends to get up to the house. A playground area underneath the tree house features swings and a tra-peze. The ground is covered in four inches of recycled tire rubber, which creates a soft and safe play area for the children.

“This was a very rewarding project for me,” Voelker says. “I was very impressed with the way the house turned out, and I know the Elko kids were too. It reminds me of a gingerbread house on stilts.”

Fond memoriesClaire and Jared have spent a lot of time at the tree house since it was finished a few months ago. They’ve even had a few sleepovers—even their dad has spent the night. “It’s a unique, yet fun place and it’s right behind the house, so we can get away whenever we want to,” Dr. Elko says. “There will come a day when they’ll be grown and on their own. I just want them to look back and remember the wonderful times we spent together.”

From the beginning, it was all about the unique beauty of the

ThinkGlass countertops that Frank eyed in a local kitchen showroom. The thick green slabs had

the wow factor that both he and his wife Janine were looking for. “We had a dated kitchen with

pickled oak, and wanted to modernize it,” explains Janine. “We also had a dining room that was

never used, and wanted to knock down walls to incorporate it as an extension of our kitchen.”

Angled designFrank, a well-known landscape artist, had a concept of what he wanted and worked with Melanie Verbaarschott, CKD, of Cabinet Sales Plus, on the design, renovation and material purchases. “I loved working with them,” says Verbaarschott. “Because of Frank’s creative side, he could visualize the plan, add to it, and participate in the development of this very contemporary kitchen.” Everything in the kitchen was based on a 45-degree angle, which was done to complement the rest of the downstairs.

Distinct cherry cabinets conceal many hidden features. With so many people always moving through the kitchen, the plan was to make it as ergonomic and user friendly as possible. A garage door cabinet rises to the ceiling to uncover a computer, and an appliance cubby has a tea station for Janine. A commercial style coffee bar is a party favorite for Frank, and gets a good workout at parties. The beverage refrigerator was built into the cabinet and is always stocked for entertaining.

ABOVE: The inspiration for the kitchen remodel came after the homeowners found the island’s glass countertop.

Two 10-inch deep sinks were installed—an element Verbaarschott says is a big trend in the kitchen design industry. “They are very modern, and allow me to hide dirty dishes if I have to,” laughs Janine. The extra cubic space helps to expedite cleanup. The sinks also feature Delta Touch2O faucets, which allow the users to tap the faucet head with a hand or wrist to turn the water on and off. “That’s really desirable when you are cooking and have kitchen grease, or cake batter on your hands,” points out Verbaarschott.

No kitchen would be complete without a pot filler positioned over the range. Janine loves the ease of use, and doesn’t miss carting large heavy pots of water to and from the sink.

Cone-shaped pendants dangle over the island, and have been crafted with small holes that throw off a luminous pink glow. With the island being extra long, the glass countertop was used to lighten the overall look and generate a floating illusion. The ThinkGlass top is hemmed in with 5 leather swivel stools. They were selected because of their low backs, which do not obstruct the view of the sleek counter. The wood cabinet base underneath holds a microwave drawer, and built-in steamer.

Eye-catching accessoriesAbove the sink, an oversized window appears like a wall of light. It carries the outdoors inside, and frames a postcard view of the couple’s backyard pool and immaculate landscape. The windows have all been covered with sheer black sunshades, allowing light to flood in even when they are closed.

OPPOSITE: The ash dining table features an espresso finish to com-plement the dark cherry cabinetry. ABOVE: The massive Sub-Zero refrigerator is built into the cabinetry. RIGHT: Garage door cabinets hide a computer and a coffeemaker.

A series of 12x12-inch glass tiles cre-ate a unique backsplash form, sort of a picture on the backsplash over the jumbo sized range and were a core element to the entire kitchen plan. Looking like water bubbles on the wall, they are hand-blown glass and have been trimmed in the same green as the island top. “They gave us the visual impact that we wanted in the room,” points out Janine.

Also key to the design was the strate-gic integration of angles. “With so many angles in the space, it was tricky laying the floor,” explains Verbaarschott. “We used a brick style porcelain tile, in egg shell white, and laid it in a herringbone pattern to work with the multiple angles in the room.” A custom oven hood was designed

to tie in with the angular scheme of the space. “We also played off the angles in our dining area,” says Janine. The dining table, made of ash with a deep espresso finish, is a favored gathering spot for friends and family.

With modern conveniences at their fingertips, the couple takes great plea-sure in cooking and entertaining. “After the coffee bar was installed, Frank went out and bought multiple bags of coffee beans and flavored syrups to experiment with,” says Janine. When company comes over, Frank takes on the role of “coffee barista,” and has been known to make an impressive caramel macchiato. “We’re like a Starbucks,” she laughs. “I don’t think he’s had this much coffee in his life.”

OPPOSITE: Glass shelves and glass-front cabinets house the homeowners’ crystal collection. TOP: The elegant living room now overlooks the newly remodeled contemporary kitchen.
