Tann ing beds ' to l l : A t least 170,000 cancers a y e a r U s e r s b e f o r e a g e 2 5 c a r r y t h e h i g h e s t r i s k

At t«as1170.000 cases of i k i o cancer each year are linked to indoor tann ing according to an analysis published online Tuesday in the British medicaljoumalfiAfJ.

Those cancers include basal-cell isandsquamous-cetlcnrcj-

imas, two common types of in-melanoma skin cancers that

aren't usually life-threatening, the study says. People who have ever used indoortanningare 29% more likely to develop basaJ-cell carcinomas than those who have never used them.

Indoor tanners are 67% more likely to develop the more serious squa-mous-cell carcinomas compared with thosewho have never tanned indoors, says the study's senior author Eleni Linos, an assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California-San Francisco.

That suggests indoor tanning is responsible for about S% of non-mebnoma skin cancers, the most

ily diagnosed '

USA saysThomasGlynrof the American Cancer Society. Non-melanoma skin cancers strike about one in five Americans during their lifetime, in chiding 30% of whites. Linos says. Those who started tanning indoors before age 25 had the highest skin cance r risk, according to the analysis, which included 12 studies involving flOyiOO people in six countries.

Other research has linked indoor tanning to malignant melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer, Linos says. The International Agency for Research on Cancerhas classified ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds as a Class I carcinogen, the same cate

gory as tobacco smoke and asbestos. Linos says the study lends support to state and city efforts to ban kids and teensfrom tanning salons.

JohnOverstreetof the Indoor Tanning Association says consumer* should be free to make informed choices about the benefits and risks of indoor tanning. "UV exposure, whetherfromthesunorasunbed.has many benefits." He cites research suggesting ultraviolet radiation from tanning bedsprovidesvi laminl l

Scientists are studying the role of vilamin D in preventing health problems, but the studies use v i tamin D supple ment^ not UV exposure.

David Elgenberg. left, and Jesse Spencer are in an elite squad.

It can't have been easy to turn a subject this hot into a show that struggles to reach lukewarm.

Still. NBC managed. The first step wa.s to let Lflw.SrOflbr's Dick Wolf solder Chicago Ftre together out of the scraps of a hundred squad-

house, multiple-crises dramas, with bits from every medical series thrown in for good measure. The second was to treat the two male stare like eye candy, to the extent you're left wondering whether the show is about

firefighters orfirefighter calendars. And the third is to hope viewers

have forgotten that a show as dangerously, darkly funny and tearingly insightful as Rescue Me ever existed Because Chicago Fire is to Rescue Me what the Osmonds were to the Jackson Five.

Carefully remove every shred of originality or excitement, and you're left with that kind of well-funded mediocrity that marks so many broadcast series. Everything looks shiny and new; everything moves along with a sort of chilly efficiency People die, buildings burn, hearts are touched, and the hour hums along. Ifs TV made for people who hale to be surprised.

Set in a firehouse populated by firefighters, paramedics and the members of an elite "rescue squad,' Fire stars Jesse Spencer and Taylor Kinneyas Casey and St ve ride, former best friends temporarily split by the hour's opening tragedy, though even theuseoftheword'tragedy'givesthe show and the stare' male-model performances more weight than they deserve.

For equal-opportunity sex appeal, the showabo sUrs Lauren German as Leslie, a lesbian paramedic who shares Severide's apartment - where the lease, apparently, forbidsherfrom beingfully clothed.'

The squadmates bond and bicker while going out on emergency calls

designed to put people at risk in strange ways:afatherandsontrapped tna car teeteringon a precipice; a guy impaled on a fence; a man who may need an on-site amputation to escape aconstructionaccident

It's the kind of thing Grey's Anatomy has been doingfor years, and with a far better balance of drama and humor.

You can't put people in those kinds of life-and-death situations and not generate someeniotionalconnection, and there are times when the show's blatant manipulation works. But even when it does, the moments seem to vanish as you watch, like smoke passing byyour eyes.

Andjust about as enticing.
