The Ayurvedic Approach to eight !anagement"
Tips for #itta-related eight Imbalances
You $ould think that since #itta dosha is associated $ith the fire
element, a person $ith high #itta $ould not have any problem burning
up carbohydrates and sugars.
Yet if the person doesn%t take care of the digestion, that can create
problems. &or instance, if someone $ho is predominantly #itta by
nature skips breakfast or other meals, that can create ama, digestive
impurities, because the digestive fire becomes too strong. In this
situation, stomach acids can 'burn' the food and even damage the
stomach.
To understand ho$ this happens, think of setting an empty pot on the
stove. The heat is on, but there%s nothing to cook. Instead, the pot
itself gets burned. In the same $ay, if you have a strong digestive
fire but you don%t feed it regularly, then the digestive en(ymes go
out of balance, burn the food and create ama the next time you eat.
!any people $ith high #itta dosha are over$eight, precisely because

they are not eating regularly and as a result ama has coated their
digestive system. hen ama blocks the channels of digestion and the
channels that circulate nutrients throughout the body, then
metabolism slo$s do$n and $eight gain results.
In this case, the added factor of hyperacidity creates additional
problems, because the #itta type%s fiery digestion tries to
overcompensate for the ama and blocked channels by producing more
acidity. The person may take an over-the-counter antacid, but still
they gain $eight because the body is no$ clogged $ith ama, and the
antacid does not address the underlying cause.
In this situation, the person should be really careful and consult an
expert in !aharishi Ayurveda, because it is very important to repair
the pot first, so to speak, and stop the damage to the stomach area
from excess digestive acids.
)ietary *ecommendations
&irst of all, the person $ith high #itta should get into the habit of
eating three meals a day, starting $ith breakfast. This is very
important, as other$ise the stomach $ill continue to be burned by
digestive acids. +ating a cooked apple or pears $ith cooked prunes or
figs for breakfast is a good idea, because it $ill soothe the
digestive fire but not overload it. *a$ pears or other s$eet, uicy
fruits are also good for people $ith high #itta. ther recommended
breakfast ideas include a cup of milk boiled $ith a pinch of po$dered
licorice and then cooled, or cooked oatmeal.
A vegetable that is good for $eight management is daikon radish. This

$hite radish can be grated and added to dhal soups for a mildly spicy
flavor. Include s$eet vegetables for lunch and dinner, such as
suashes that are $hite inside /(ucchini, loki or yello$ suash0.
1team them $ell and then saut2 them in ghee $ith mild, cooling
spices
such as po$dered fennel, small amounts of cumin and small amounts of
turmeric. You can add 3-4 cloves to dhal soups, vegetables or grains
as you cook them, because even though clove seems to be pungent and
sharp, it actually has a cooling effect if you cook $ith it but don%t
che$ it.
You can also boil $ater and let it steep $ith licorice root and
fennel seed. )rink it throughout the day to help digestion and cool
#itta dosha. 5icorice pacifies #itta dosha, and fennel opens the
channels of digestion and circulation $ithout aggravating #itta.
/#lease note" If you have high blood pressure or are retaining $ater,
licorice is not recommended--consult an expert trained in !aharishi
Ayurveda.0 Yello$ split mung dhal is a good source of protein $hen
cooked as a soup $ith spices. 6uinoa and basmati rice, cooked $ith a
little olive oil or ghee, are recommended grains. If you are
over$eight, and $onder $hy ghee or olive oil is recommended in
cooking, remember that in this case the stomach has been damaged by
hyperacidity, and healthy fats such as ghee and olive oil $ill
lubricate the area and help repair the damage. &or a more detailed

mustard seed. These $ill only increase the acidity. A person in this
situation may be dra$n to heavy, cold, s$eet foods to cool the
acidity. 9ut heavy, cold foods $ill only make the problem $orse by
creating more ama and blocking the channels of digestion and
metabolism. It%s better to cool the digestive fire by cooking $ith
cooling spices, eating light desserts $ith your meal such as fruit
crisps, and by drinking light dairy drinks such as s$eet lassi.
1leep is Important
#eople $ho are predominantly #itta should go to sleep before the
#itta time of the evening /3:":: p.m. to 4":: a.m.0. +ven if you feel
like you have a lot of energy then, or feel more creative, it%s not a
good idea to stay a$ake during the #itta time of night, because this
only aggravates #itta dosha further. And if you stay a$ake during the
#itta time of night, you $ill invariably get hungry and thirsty and
may eat packaged cookies or salty snacks, or drink soft drinks or
alcohol. All of these things $ill only disturb #itta dosha further
and contribute to $eight gain.
