Game Storylines• Following a two-game road trip, Pitt returns home and will host longtime eastern foe Syracuse. Both teams are looking to get back on the winning track follow-ing defeats last week.

• The Panthers are looking to snap a two-game losing skid fol-lowing defeats at UCF and North Carolina. Syracuse suffered its first loss of the season, a last-min-ute setback at Clemson last week.

• Pitt and Syracuse have played every year since 1955, when both schools were independents. Pitt has won 13 of the past 16 games in the series but dropped last year's encounter, 27-24.

• Tight games are commonplace between Pitt and Syracuse. Four of the past six games have been decided by three points or less.

• Pitt is 22-11 against Syracuse in Pittsburgh. That record includes a 7-1 mark at Heinz Field. The Or-ange’s only victory at Heinz came in the stadium’s inaugural season, a 42-10 decision in 2001.

• Third-year Syracuse head coach Dino Babers is very familiar with Pitt and Pittsburgh. During the 2003 season, Babers served as running backs coach under Pan-thers head coach Walt Harris.

• Syracuse leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally in turn-overs gained with 12. The Orange are plus-8 in turnover margin for the season (12 gained, four lost). Pitt, in contrast, is minus-1 on the year (seven gained, eight lost).

• Pitt has proven capable of big plays in the return game. The Panthers have scored touch-downs on a kickoff return (Mau-rice Ffrench) and punt return (Rafael Araujo-Lopes). Pitt is the only team in the ACC to score TDs on both a kickoff and punt this season.

• Five Pitt opponents appear in this week's Top 25 polls: Notre Dame (No. 6 Associated Press/No. 7 USA Today Coaches Poll), Penn State (No. 11/11), UCF (No. 12/13), Miami (No. 17/17) and Virginia Tech (No. 24/No. 23).

√ The 2018 season marks the fourth for Pat Narduzzi as Pitt's head football coach. From 2015-17, the Panthers won 21 games, the most victories by a Pitt football coach in his initial three years since Jackie Sherrill (28 wins from 1977-79).

√ Pitt closed the 2017 season with a 24-14 victory over No. 2 Miami, the highest-ranked op-ponent the Panthers have ever defeated at home. Pitt snapped the nation’s longest active winning streak at 15 games by beating the Hurricanes.

√ Narduzzi is 2-0 as a head coach against teams ranked No. 2. In addition to the Miami victory in 2017, the Panthers defeated No. 2 Clemson, 43-42, in 2016. It was the Tigers' only loss that season as they finished with a 14-1 record and claimed the College Football Playoff national championship.

√ In 2016, Narduzzi's Panthers defeated two teams that finished in the top 5 of the final 2016 College Football Playoff rankings. Pitt defeated eventual national champion Clemson (43-42) and kept No. 5 Penn State out of the playoff field by defeating the Nittany Lions, 42-39. √ Twenty-four of Narduzzi's Pitt players have signed NFL contracts. The Panthers had five players selected in the 2017 NFL Draft and three more taken in 2018, marking Pitt’s most draft selections over a two-year span since 2003-04.

√ In 2016, Quadree Henderson earned consensus All-America status as a return specialist after leading the country in kickoff return touchdowns (three) and combined kick return yards (1,166). Additionally, guard Dorian Johnson also was a first team All-American under Narduzzi. √ In his debut campaign at Pitt in 2015, Narduzzi led the Panthers to an 8-4 regular-season record, their best 12-game mark since 2009, and a Mili-tary Bowl invitation. Pitt finished as the runner-up in the ACC Coastal Division with a 6-2 mark, its best conference record ever.

√ Pitt boasted the ACC’s top offensive and defen-sive newcomers in 2015. Safety Jordan Whitehead was named the league’s Overall and Defensive Rookie of the Year. Tailback Qadree Ollison was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year following a 1,000-yard rushing campaign.

√ Narduzzi arrived at Pitt following eight highly successful years as the defensive coordinator at Michigan State under Mark Dantonio. The Spar-tans were the only team to rank in the nation’s top 10 in total defense and rushing defense each season from 2011-14.

√ Michigan State boasted the nation’s top rush-ing defense in 2014, yielding just 88.5 yards per game. The Spartans finished third nationally with 34 turnovers gained and eighth in total defense, holding opponents to just 315.8 yards per con-test.

√ In 2014, the Spartans finished with a No. 5 national ranking and 11-2 record following a stir-ring 42-41 victory over Baylor in the AT&T Cotton Bowl. Narduzzi’s defense shut out the high-scor-ing Bears in the fourth quarter, opening the door for 21 unanswered points by Michigan State.

√ In 2013, Michigan State finished No. 3 in the country following a Big Ten title and 24-20 victory over No. 5 Stanford in the Rose Bowl. Narduzzi was named the 2013 recipient of the prestigious Broyles Award, annually presented to the country’s top assistant coach.

√ Narduzzi's decorated defensive players at Michigan State included first team All-Americans in cornerback Darqueze Dennard, safety Kurtis Drummond, linebacker Greg Jones and defensive tackle Jerel Worthy. Dennard was a unanimous All-American in 2013, becoming the first Michi-gan State cornerback to earn that distinction. He also was the school’s first winner of the Jim Thorpe Award, given to college football’s top defensive back.

√ Dennard was a first-round NFL Draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2014, the first Spartans defensive back taken in the initial round since 1961. In the 2015 draft, another Narduzzi pupil, Michigan State cornerback Trae Waynes, was a first-round pick of the Minnesota Vikings.

√ Prior to Michigan State, Narduzzi spent three years (2004-06) as defensive coordinator under Dantonio at Cincinnati, helping the Bearcats to a pair of bowl invitations. In 2003, Narduzzi was the defensive coordinator at Miami of Ohio under the late Terry Hoeppner. The RedHawks stormed to a 13-1 record that season, capturing the Mid-American Conference championship and defeat-ing nationally ranked Louisville in the GMAC Bowl to finish No. 10 in the Associated Press poll.

√ Narduzzi served as linebackers coach at Northern Illinois for three seasons (2000-02). NIU won a pair of MAC divisional titles during his tenure and in 2002 had the league’s top rushing defense. From 1993-99, Narduzzi coached at his alma mater, Rhode Island, serving as the Rams’ defensive coordinator his final two seasons. He began his coaching career at Miami of Ohio, working as a graduate assistant in 1990 and 1991, before earning his first full-time position as receivers coach for the 1992 season.

√ Narduzzi was a starting linebacker under his father, the late Bill Narduzzi, as a freshman at Youngstown State University in 1985 before transferring to Rhode Island, where he became a three-year starter for the Rams from 1987-89. Bill Narduzzi was head coach at YSU from 1975-85. He led the Penguins to two NCAA Division II play-off appearances, including the national champion-ship game in 1979, and twice was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. One of Bill's first coaching posts was as a freshman line coach at Pitt in 1962.

Pitt has four players on its 2018 roster who hail from the state of New York. 129 YEARS AND COUNTINGThe 2018 campaign marks the 129th football season in Pitt history. The Panthers, who played their inaugural season in 1890, have a 719-530-42 all-time record (.573). The program’s rich legacy includes 92 first team All-Americans, 24 College Football Hall of Famers, eight Pro Football Hall of Famers and nine national titles.

YOUR 2018 PITT TEAM CAPTAINSAs selected by their teammates, the captains for the 2018 Panthers are senior offensive lineman Alex Bookser, senior safety Dennis Briggs and senior linebacker Quintin Wirginis. Briggs was also elected a captain as a junior in 2017. He becomes Pitt's first multiple-time captain since defensive tackle Aaron Donald in 2012-13.

ACTIVE DUTY FOR THREE TRUE FROSHThree true freshmen have seen active duty for Pitt thus far. On offense, wide receiver Shocky Jacques-Louis has played in all five games, earning a pair of starting assignments, while running back Mychale Salahuddin has played in the last three contests. Defensive-ly, cornerback Marquis Williams has seen action in two games.

MORE FRESH FACESFifteen redshirt freshmen have made their collegiate debuts this sea-son. That total includes seven players on offense (running back Todd Sibley Jr.; receivers Dontavius Butler-Jenkins and Michael Smith; offensive linemen Jerry Drake Jr., Gabe Houy and Carson Van Lynn; and tight end Grant Carrigan), six defensive players (cornerback Paris Ford; defensive linemen Deslin Alexandre and Jaylen Twyman; and linebackers Albert Tucker, Cam Bright and Kyle Nunn) and two specialists (punter Kirk Christodoulou and placekicker/holder Jake Scarton).

TOUGH NON-CONFERENCE TESTSPrior to the 2018 season, ESPN.com rated Pitt's non-conference schedule as the toughest in the country. "The top spot was a no-brainer," ESPN Senior Staff Writer Chris Low wrote of the Panthers. Of Pitt's four non-ACC games, three are against FBS opponents whose combined record last season was 34-5. Pitt hosted historic rival Penn State of the Big Ten on Sept. 8. The Nittany Lions were 11-2 last year. The Panthers also played on the road at UCF (Sept. 29), which claimed a national title with a 13-0 record in 2017. The Panthers' final non-ACC game of 2018 will be in South Bend against Notre Dame (Oct. 13). The Fighting Irish were 10-3 last season.

RANKED FOES Five Pitt opponents appear in this week's Top 25 polls: Notre Dame (No. 6 Associated Press/No. 7 USA Today Coaches Poll), Penn State (No. 11/11), UCF (No. 12/13), Miami (No. 17/17) and Virginia Tech (No. 24/No. 23). CLOSING 2017 WITH A BIG "W" Pitt punctuated its 2017 season with an exclamation point, defeating No. 2 Miami at Heinz Field, 24-14, to knock the Hurricanes out of the College Football Playoff hunt. The Panthers limited Miami to 232 total yards—and only 45 on the ground—while notching a season-high four sacks. The Hurricanes' rushing output was their lowest of the season while their total yard-age was the second lowest. Offensively, Pitt was ignited by freshman quarterback Kenny Pickett, who in his first career start ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to hand Miami its first loss of the season. The No. 2 Hurricanes became the highest-ranked opponent the Panthers had ever beaten in Pittsburgh. Prior to the win over Miami, the highest-ranked foe Pitt had defeated at home was No. 3 Ford-ham, 13-0, at Pitt Stadium on Nov. 8, 1941. Pitt snapped the nation's longest active winning streak at 15 games by beating the Hurricanes.

A KNACK FOR BEATING NO. 2 Under Coach Pat Narduzzi, Pitt is 2-0 against opponents ranked No. 2. In addition to the 24-14 win over Miami to close the 2017 season, Narduzzi's Panthers knocked off No. 3/2 Clemson, 43-42, in Death Valley on Nov. 12, 2016. It would be the lone blemish of the season for the Tigers, who would go on to win the national title with a 14-1 record.

Only one player on Pitt's 2018 roster can claim a 1,000-yard rushing season as a collegian: senior running back Qadree Ollison, who net-ted 1,121 yards in 2015 en route to earning ACC Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Ollison will attempt to become just the sixth player in Pitt history to achieve multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons before his eligibility expires. HALL MAKES MARKRunning back Darrin Hall was a workhorse for Pitt's rushing attack during the final stretch of the 2017 season. Hall averaged 104 rushing yards over the last five games, totaling 520 yards and eight touchdowns on 97 carries (5.4 avg.). He rushed for more than 100 yards in three of those five contests. On the 2017 season, Hall led Pitt in rushing with 628 yards and nine touchdowns on 128 carries (4.9 avg.). Through five games of the 2018 season, Hall has 31 carries for 207 yards (6.7 avg.) and two TDs.

DARRIN DAZZLED AT DUKEDarrin Hall achieved one of the most prolific rushing games in school history while breaking a century-old school record in Pitt's 24-17 victory at Duke last season (Oct. 21). Facing a Blue Devils rush defense that ranked No. 16 nationally (yielding 108 yards per game), Hall rambled for a career-high 254 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged a sensational 10.6 yards on 24 carries. Hall ripped off touchdown sprints of 79 and 92 yards. The latter score marked the longest touchdown run in Pitt history, eclipsing the 100-year-old record of 91 established in 1917 by George McLaren. Hall's third TD, a four-yard score with 10:48 left, gave Pitt the lead for good at 21-17.

A NEW STANDARDDarrin Hall's 92-yard touchdown run in Pitt's 24-17 win at Duke in 2017 is the longest in school history. Hall eclipsed a record that stood for 100 years: George McLaren's 91-yard scoring run against Syracuse on Oct. 20, 1917.

PICKETT'S MEMORABLE FIRST STARTIn the first start of his college career, then-freshman Kenny Pickett accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing and one passing) in engineering the Panthers' 24-14 upset of No. 2 Miami to close the 2017 season. Pickett completed 18-of-29 passes (62%) for 193 yards with zero interceptions and was also Pitt's second-leading rusher with 60 yards on 13 carries (4.6 avg.). Pickett's six-yard touchdown rush gave the Panthers a 10-7 lead right before intermission. Late in the third quarter he connected with Qadree Ollison on a five-yard shovel pass to increase the advan-tage to 17-7. Pickett's final TD proved to be the clincher—a perfectly executed bootleg on fourth down that the freshman took for a 22-yard score.

DEFENSIVE NOTESSTICKY FINGERS

Sophomore defensive end Rashad Weaver is tied for the national lead with three fumble recoveries. (Tied with Washington safety Tay-lor Rapp.) Weaver picked up two fumbles in the Sept. 8 Penn State game, returning one for 20 yards. He became the first Pitt player to recover two fumbles in a single game since linebacker Mike Caprara also had two against Penn State on Sept. 10, 2016. Weaver added another fumble recovery in the Sept. 15 victory over Georgia Tech. As a team, the Panthers rank 30th nationally and third in the ACC in fumble recoveries with four. Redshirt freshman linebacker Cam Bright has Pitt's other fumble recovery (against North Carolina).

IT'S BEEN AWHILEShould defensive end Rashad Weaver recover a fourth fumble this season, it would be the first time in 37 years a Pitt player achieved that feat. The last time it occurred was during the 1981 season when defensive end Michael Woods collected a total of five fumble recover-ies.

KNOCK IT LOOSEThe Panthers also have a player among the national leaders in forced fumbles. Junior cornerback Dane Jackson has two forced fumbles in four games played this season. His average of 0.50 forced fumbles per contest ranks tied for first in the ACC (with Virginia Tech defen-sive lineman Houshun Gaines) and 10th nationally.

BIG INT RETURNJunior safety Damar Hamlin made a key play in Pitt's season-opening 33-7 win over Albany when he halted the Great Danes' first drive with an interception at the Pitt 2. Hamlin returned the pick 79 yards, setting up the Panthers' second touchdown for an early 13-0 lead. The 79-yard interception return marked Pitt’s longest since Octo-ber 16, 2010, when Ricky Gary had an 80-yard return for a score at Syracuse.

SACK ATTACKDuring the Pat Narduzzi era, Pitt has recorded four or more quar-terback sacks in a game 14 times. The Panthers have an 11-3 record in those contests where they have compiled at least four sacks. In its 33-7 season-opening win over Albany, Pitt compiled five sacks. It marked the Panthers' highest sack total since also recording five against Duke on Nov. 19, 2016.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTESCHRISTODOULOU MAKES AMERICAN DEBUT

Redshirt freshman punter Kirk Christodoulou, in his first active sea-son at Pitt, is averaging 38.2 yards on 26 punts. He has a season long of 56 yards (against Albany) and has placed six inside the 20-yard line. The 2018 season not only marks Christodoulou's collegiate debut but also his first official game action in America. A native of Australia, Christodoulou enrolled at the University of Pittsburgh in January 2017. He was a standout Australian rules foot-ball player before embarking on his goal to play college football in the United States. Christodoulou worked with the renowned Prokick Australia program that has produced many successful collegiate and NFL punters. Prokick Australia’s “exports” include Pittsburgh Steelers punter Jordan Berry and all three 2016 Ray Guy Award finalists: winner Mitch Wishnowsky (Utah) as well as Michael Dickson (Texas; now with the Seattle Seahawks) and Cameron Johnston (Ohio State; now with the Philadelphia Eagles).

OPENING THE 2018 SEASON IN STYLEPitt opened the 2018 season in explosive fashion against Albany when junior receiver Maurice Ffrench returned the game’s opening kickoff for a 91-yard touchdown. It was the first kick return score of his collegiate career and the first time on record that the Panthers opened a season with a kickoff return TD. Ffrench's return marked the second time in 27 games Pitt returned the game's opening kickoff for a score. The previous occasion was on Dec. 28, 2015, when Quadree Henderson had a 100-yard return against Navy in the Military Bowl.

FFRENCH AMONG TOP KICK RETURNERS Maurice Ffrench is the lone ACC player to return a kickoff for a touchdown this season. Ffrench additionally ranks second in the ACC (20th nationally) with a 27.0-yard kickoff return average. He has eight total returns for 216 yards, including his 91-yard return for a touchdown in the opener against Albany. As a team, the Panthers rank fifth in the ACC and 37th nationally with a 23.09 average (11 for 254).

Pitt is the only team in the ACC to score return touchdowns on both a kickoff and punt this season. Maurice Ffrench is responsible for the kick return TD, a 91-yarder against Albany (Sept. 1) on the opening kickoff of the 2018 season. The punt return touchdown was scored by Rafael Araujo-Lopes at UCF (Sept. 29). Araujo-Lopes took a punt 86 yards for a score, marking the Panthers' longest punt return in at least four decades. (The Pitt record for longest punt return is a 90-yarder for a score by Jimmy Joe Robinson against Penn State in 1945.)

RETURN GAME TOUCHDOWNS Since the 2000 season, Pitt has 23 kick returns for touchdowns (12 on kickoffs and 11 on punts). Eleven of those have occurred during Pat Narduzzi's tenure. Since the 2015 season, the Panthers have six TDs on kickoffs and five on punts.

BIG FOOTAs a redshirt freshman placekicker last season, Alex Kessman kicked two field goals of more than 50 yards: a 55-yarder at Georgia Tech (Sept. 23), the second longest field goal in school history, and a 56-yarder at Syracuse (Oct. 7), setting a Carrier Dome record and tying the Pitt school mark. Kessman matched the Pitt record set in 2015 by Chris Blewitt. Since 1961 (57 years), Pitt has made only 14 field goals of 50 yards or more. Pitt rolled past visiting Albany, 33-7, in the 2018 season opener for both teams…the Panthers seized control at the opening kickoff when Maurice Ffrench had a 91-yard return for a touchdown…it was the first kick return score of his collegiate career and marked Pitt’s first game-opening kickoff return TD since 2015 (Quadree Henderson, 100-yard return vs. Navy in the Military Bowl)...it was the first sea-son-opening kick return TD by Pitt on record...Kenny Pickett, making his second career start, finished the first half 13 of 13 for 129 yards and two TDs..his first incompletion came on his initial attempt of the second half when he threw the ball away under pressure…Pickett fin-ished 16-of-22 passing for 154 yards with two TDs and one INT…he additionally rushed for 42 yards on six carries and a score…Pitt piled up 238 yards on the ground, led by Qadree Ollison’s game-high 73 on seven carries (10.4 avg.)…the Great Danes mustered only 60 rushing yards…the Panthers collected five sacks for losses totaling 33 yards…tackle Keyshon Camp had a personal-high two sacks…Pitt moved to 16-1 all-time against FCS opponents…the Panthers improved to 4-0 in opening contests under Pat Narduzzi.

Playing its second consecutive road game, Pitt could not contain explosive UCF and dropped a 45-14 decision in Orlando...the Knights, ranked as high as No. 13 nationally, improved to 4-0 on the season and extended the nation’s longest active winning streak to 17 games...quarterback McKenzie Milton accounted for all six UCF touchdowns, throwing four and rushing for two more...he connected on 18-of-34 passes for 328 yards...Milton’s performance spurred the Knights on to 568 total yards...the Panthers were bottled up on offense for most of the afternoon and managed just 272 yards...Pitt’s first touchdown was a special teams gem, an 86-yard punt return by Rafael Araujo-Lopes...the punt return was Pitt’s longest in at least four decades and made it 14-7 in the first quarter...but that would be as close as the Panthers would get as UCF scored 31 unanswered points...Pitt (2-3) hurt its own cause by piling up 11 penalties for 125 yards...two of those penalties wiped out interceptions, including a theft by Damar Hamlin that was returned 88 yards to the UCF 3 before being wiped out by a roughing-the-passer penalty...safety Jazzee Stocker had a ca-reer-high nine tackles, while linebacker Oluwaseun Idowu compiled seven stops, two TFLs and a sack.
