2018 pitchIN ECF Review

In 2018, despite challenging market conditions, pitchIN strengthened its leading position in the Malaysian ECF market.

2018 was no ordinary year for Malaysians. It will always be remembered for the 14th General Elections and its landmark result.

pitchIN was not spared from the impact generated by the feverish election campaign that played out over the backdrop of a weakening global economy. The year really began in June for us at pitchIN. Until June 2018, pitchIN was only able to take one deal live, with the rest preferring to wait till elections were over.

See in that light, our performance is commendable. pitchIN maintained its No. 1 position in the ECF industry. Despite operating in earnest only from June, we raised about the same amount of funds as in 2017. We grew our market share in ECF deals and funds raised. pitchIN did 8 out of the 14 successful ECF deals in 2018. 75% (RM13.6M) of the total money raised by the Malaysian ECF industry in 2018 was done on pitchIN. There has also been a steady growth in our investors base. To date, more than 1200 investors have put money into at least one pitchIN ECF deal. A fair number of them have made multiple investments.

Larger deals were the norm this year as ECF became an accepted fundraising tool for larger companies looking to scale. Our average deal size grew to RM1.7 million in 2018, up from RM1.1 million in 2017.

However, the real metrics that will draw investors and cement ECF as an attractive investment tool are those that track how well the issuers that raised funds through ECF are faring. 2017 was too early for anyone to judge as most companies had just raised their funds. 2018 is a better time to gauge how the companies are doing. On those scores, we are blessed with great companies. pitchIN is pleased to report that most of our Issuers are doing well. 6 companies have raised or are about to raise more funds at significantly higher valuations. An overwhelming majority of our Issuers are recording higher revenues and traction.

pitchIN has become known for finding great companies for investors. In 2018, we were delighted with the response from investors. We maintained our 100% record for funding deals. And we continued to set records. Commerce DotAsia Ventures entered the Malaysian Book of Records for the largest funded ECF deal when it raised RM5 million on pitchIN in May 2018. In October 2018, Fundaztic P2P platform generated quite a buzz by raising RM4 million in just 38 minutes.

pitchIN takes this opportunity to extend its deepest gratitude to its issuers, investors and partners who have helped us to make pitchIN the No. 1 ECF platform in 2018.

MALAYSIAN ECF INDUSTRYThe Malaysian ECF industry experienced tough market conditions in 2018. Only 3 out of 7 operators (including pitchIN) completed deals this year. Overall, the number of successful campaigns dropped to 14 from 22 in 2017. The amount raised also dipped from RM23.3 million in 2017 to RM18 million this year.

PITCHIN ISSUERSpitchIN continued to focus on connecting great companies to investors. While the number of campaigns that we hosted were less than 2017 due to the effects of GE14, we were still able to list credible deals that attracted investors on our platform. The size of the pitchIN ECF industry in terms of market capitalization is steadily growing. Together with subsequent fund raising by some Issuers, the market capitalization of our Issuers breached the RM350 million mark in 2018, a decent size by any measurement of the capital market. Other statistics presented here reveals more information on our Issuers and their fundraising profiles.

PITCHIN INVESTORSOur investor base has grown to over 1200. There is a healthy mix of retail, angel and sophisticated investors. While retail investors make up the bulk of pitchIN investors, the angel and sophisticated investors are the ones that put in the most money into deals.

An in-depth look at figures reveal that a fair number of our investors make multiple investments. One investor has made 14 investments to date on pitchIN and another 20 investors have made 4 or more investments.

PITCHIN OUTLOOK 2019pitchIN remains fully focussed on becoming the leading startups and SMEs investment platform in the region. This year, we will continue to cement further our No. 1 position in the Malaysian ECF industry through more outreach initiatives and by adding a liquidity option to our offering.

The Malaysian economy continues to face challenges and we foresee that this will continue throughout 2019. However, the steps and measures taken by the new government are already bringing confidence back to the market. Specifically for the ECF industry, the RM50 million Co-investment Fund announced by the government for Equity Crowdfunding and Peer-to-Peer Financing industry will ease the path for more Issuers to raise successfully. While full details of this initiative has not been released, we expect it to be implemented by the second half of the year.

On our part, pitchIN will increase its efforts to grow ECF awareness outside the Klang Valley. This will be done through a combination of events, promotional campaigns and possibly through placing representatives in receptive areas. pitchIN will also reach out to the diverse demographics found in our nation. More content will be created, and activities carried out in other languages.

An initiative that we look forward to is the proposed pitchIN Secondary Market. Now that we have 24 Issuers, a secondary market is the next logical step as it will add necessary liquidity to the ECF market. The Securities Commission is expected to release their framework for secondary markets this year. Following that, we will engage with SC and work towards launching our Secondary Market this year.

In summary, we are very excited about the prospects for 2019. We have a very healthy deal flow. Issuers have been lined up for launch and we are confident that pitchIN will again reach new heights in 2019.
