Welcome to the 10th year of Piping Live!

Reaching this landmark year is a great

cause for celebration and a reason for

us all to enjoy a special Piping Live!

party. This year we start a day early with a 10th birthday

celebration at The National Piping Centre and throughout

the week we will mark the occasion with events such as our

10th anniversary tune competition.

We have put together a fantastic programme and this

year’s festival is scheduled to attract 30,000 spectators

to more than 150 events across 7 days.

A huge thanks must go to our sponsors and funders without

whom Piping Live! would not be possible. All that remains

to say is that I look forward to seeing you all at this year’s

festival and I hope you all enjoy yourselves.

Piping Live! 10 years on...

Glasgow International Piping Festival began in 2004. The

week leading up to The World Pipe Band Championships,

Glasgow seemed to be abuzz with pipers, drummers and

people who love the music. The National Piping Centre

saw this as an opportunity to programme more events to

celebrate the music of the Great Highland Bagpipe, and

thus, Piping Live! was born.

Piping Hot! was the first Glasgow International Piping

Festival, in August 2004. This event brought together all

of the pipers and drummers who were in Glasgow for

the week leading up to the World Pipe Band

Championships, as well as bringing

acts from across the world to

showcase their own

piping culture. Featured

artists at Piping Hot

were Katherine Tickell,

Fred Morrison, Robbie

Hannan, NYPBoS,

Christina Pato, Patrick

Molard and Finlay

MacDonald.

In 2005 Piping Live! was

formed and took its

place on the international

festival calendar. With great

support from Glenfiddich,

Glasgow City Marketing Bureau,

Event Scotland, The Scottish Arts

council the festival went from strength to strength throughout

the next few years. Highlights of the festival in these early years

include an enormous selection of acts; bands including Red

Hot Chilli Pipers, Skerryvore, Capercaillie and Friends and

Breabach; world renowned pipers Willie McCallum, Jack Lee,

Stuart Liddell, Roddy MacLeod; Pipe Bands from across the

world from USA, Australia, India, Canada, New Zealand; and

hundreds more!

Since 2010 Piping Live! has been one of the biggest festivals

on Glasgow’s calendar drawing in thousands of visitors every

August. We would like to take this opportunity to thank every

one of our supporters and audience members for making

Piping Live! what it is today. Without your support and

attendance we would not be where we are and we are truly

grateful for that. We hope you enjoy Piping Live! 2013 and can

celebrate with us as we go into our 10th year. As you can see

from this programme we have hundreds of acts and events for

you to enjoy.

4pm-5pm Art Exhibition Launch with Robert Matheson and Duncan Brown To help celebrate our 10th Anniversary this exhibition of original paintings and portraits includes some of the big names that have performed at Piping Live and the World Pipe Band Championships, as well as some famous historical pipers and drummers. 5pm Finlay MacDonald and Chris Stout Album Launch Two of Piping Live!’s regulars Finlay and Chris kick off the weeks live music with a smashing set in our Street Cafe. The pair will be treating us by premiering some of the tunes from their long awaited duo album. Free. The Street Cafe.

8pm The Scott Wood Trio Formed in the summer of 2012 for the Piping Live! Festival, The Scott Wood Trio are an energetic and dynamic band with driving tunes and innovative arrangements. Featuring Mhairi MacKinnon and Ron Jappay,this exciting trio combine a mixture of pipes/whistle, fiddle and guitar to create a tight, powerful and energetic live sound. Free. The Pipers Tryst.

9pm Barluath Barluath are a traditional/folk music band who embrace a wide range of musical styles including Gaelic and Scots song, bagpipes, whistles, fiddle, guitar, bouzouki, bass, clarinet and piano. 10am-9pm Masters Solo Piping Competition Piping Live! will begin with this fantastic solo competition which is now a qualifier for the Glenfiddich Solo Piping Championship. Competitors include Gold Medallists, Glenfiddich Champions and International prize winners. This will be solo piping at its very best! The Piobaireachd starts at 10.00am in the Auditorium of the National Piping Centre and the March Strathspey and Reel competition begins at 5.00pm Separate tickets must be held for each event. Hot off the success of her work on Disney’s Brave soundtrack, this is Gaelic music and song at its very best. 7.30pm Friday Night Folk – Niall and Cillian Vallely, Voyage Quartet, Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson Big band Featuring three of the most exciting, modern collaborations on the folk/piping scene. Piping Live! favourites Ross Ainslie ( Scottish pipes/whistles) and Jarlath Henderson (Uillian pipes/whistles) started playing together in 2003 and together create a pipe sound that pushes the boundaries of what both Irish and Scottish Instruments can achieve together. Cillian and Niall Vallely, Two fantastic musicians from the famous Vallely family play blistering traditional and contemporary tunes from Ireland and beyond on Uillean pipes and Concertina. Saturday 17th and Sunday18th AugustThe World Pipe Band Championships The biggest piping competition on the planet has grown to a full weekend this year. There will be heats over both days culminating in Sunday’s thrilling Grade 1 Finals. On Saturday spectators can also enjoy the prestigious Drum Major competition and the best in Highalnd Dancing, and on Sunday - new for 2013 - hear live bands in the Music Tent.

The Worlds also features an extended two-day Worlds Highlander Competition, with strong-men and -women from across the globe in an impressive display of strength. Throughout the weekend there’s also a fantastic Children’s Area, food stalls, a flavour bar and the traders area with merchandise and souvenirs on sale.

Sunday 18th AugustPiping Live! Wrap PartyAfter a weekend at The World Pipe Band Championships come down to The National Piping Centre for our open house wrap party. We’ve got some fantastic music from Fred Morrison, the Tryst’ bar is open til the small wee hours, a Glenfiddich whisky tasting, and a ceilidh to round off the worlds biggest week of piping!
