pet

s Roxy Tayebi is a teeny tiny bundle of trouble! The adorable pomeranian found her way into the hearts and home of the Tayebi family when she was just a few ounces in weight and could fit in the palm of your hand. Mahnaz and Abi’s son, James, surprised them one day while he was in college by bringing home a little fluff ball and everyone fell instantly in love. Roxy is now 11 years old and she’s been living the high life ever since.

Despite her itty bitty size, Roxy has the appetite of a Rottweiler! She loves to eat as much as she pos-sibly can and she has a lot of energy. Roxy knows quite a few tricks, but her all-time favorite is to “dance” on her hind legs with the paws in the air.

From England To America!

Meet Cool Kid, Lottie FrancLottie Franc, five years old, is a relatively new addition to Piper Glen. She moved to Charlotte with her parents, Chris and Hayley, and her sister, Libby, just about 18 months ago from Oxford, England. She attends Charlotte Prep and has certainly been keeping busy!

One of Lottie’s absolute favorite things to do is be in the pool. She has really taken to tossing dive sticks into the deep end and then diving down to re-cover them. She also attends gymnas-tics, dance class, and has joined the Girl Scouts – stay on the lookout for her selling delicious cookies!

Lottie has also proven to be quite the little engineer and loves to build things from Legos. Her favorite place to travel

is Cyprus with her family. She is still adapting to U.S. food and loves British sausages, but has been having trouble finding them. For now, she’s enjoying American pizza and ice cream. She’s recently discovered the art of telling jokes and would like to leave us with her current favorite:

What do you call a fairy that doesn’t take a bath? (A Stinkerbell!)

When It’s Time For A Change…

Ken and Laura O’Dea are the operators of Assisted Living Locators in Char-lotte. They serve those families with a member who has reached a stage where they simply need some extra help in daily life. Here is how they describe their wonderful services! We sometimes tell people we are like a “Senior Realtor!” Our company works with seniors and their families in the area to help them navigate the overwhelming number of choices for senior care. By personally meeting with the individual or family mem-bers we can assess what the care level needs are, desire for social activities, specific geographic areas they would like to live in, which will help us to determine where the best fit will be for that individual. Because of our in-depth knowledge of the many retirement/care communities in the area, we are able to take the stress and lengthy process of helping with a transition off of the individual or family member. We can assist with finding Indepen-dent Retirement Living, Assisted Living, Memory Care or recommend a quality home care agency. We are able to work with any community in Charlotte or surrounding areas. Our company also has a network of other Assisted Living Locators team mem-bers around the country and we can provide help with a family member that might be living in another area of the country through our network. In order to help families and individ-uals in the marketplace, you must first know what is most important

to the family or the individual in moving to this next phase of their life. We also make certain that we personally visit and get to know the staff at each of the communities so that we have a good feel for the quality of care, level of interaction with staff members and residents, as well as the physical maintenance of the community. We utilize a website provided by the North Carolina adult care licensure division to review the ratings for each of the communities in our area on a quarterly basis to determine if there have been any penalties or fines assessed on the community and will remove commu-nities from our recommended list if we feel the level of care has deterio-rated at a community.  I, Laura, was a caregiver for my Mom in another state and I know firsthand how difficult it can be for the family. We have a real passion for work-ing with seniors and their families and enjoy getting to know their life stories. Ken is a Veteran and many of the individuals we work with were also Veterans, so there is a kinship that Veterans feel that also makes a difference in wanting to help.

Working so closely with the many communities allows us to know all the right questions to ask before making a decision. We often tell cli-ents that the prettiest, shiny newest facility may not always be the best fit. There are a number of other factors that you should consider that most families don’t even know to ask about a community. We also have the inside scoop on which communities may be looking to have new move-ins and might be willing to make a deal on the pricing, waive the one-time commu-nity fee or upgrade the floor plan for the same price. So many people we meet, when they learn what we do, immediately say, “I wish I had known you last year, six months ago, etc. – we just went through that with our Mom … Dad … Grandmother – and it was confusing and exhausting.”   For most of the communities in the area, we have a partnership agree-ment in place where they will pay us our fee for our services for finding a person who becomes a resident. Much like a Realtor, the buyer doesn’t pay the Realtor’s fee, the seller pays that fee to the Realtor for finding them a buyer. We work in much the same

Ken and Laura O’Dea – Lifestyle Transitions

way with a majority of the communities in the area. So we are a no-cost service to the family or individual to let us navigate the confusing path to finding the right community. We encourage seniors and their families not to wait too long to make the transition. For example, if someone is interested in moving into what is known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) where they can age in place and transition from Independent Retirement Living to Assisted Living, Memory Care or Skilled Nursing Care, they must be able to live inde-pendently initially to qualify for that type of community. So many seniors want to stay in their own homes so long and if they have

a serious health issue (stroke, heart attack, falls that cause a break, etc.) they may limit the options they have and be forced to go to a skilled nursing facility instead of being able to consider Assisted Living or Inde-pendent living as options with a little extra help.

Around the holidays, families get together that may not have seen each other much recently and may start to notice that a loved one is not walking as well as they were, seem unable to manage paying bills and organizing their finances, the house is not well kept and maintenance on the property is not being done regular-ly. These are all signs that it may be time to consider making a change and most importantly for the senior, while they still have a choice they can make for themselves, instead of waiting too long until a decision has to be made for them. *If you are a senior or are involved with the decision making for a loved one’s care, we encourage you to call Laura and Ken O’Dea at Assisted Living Locators at 704-370-9784. A simple con-versation will give you a much better understanding of the issues involved in these important stages of life.

r Parties, receptions and special occasions – this is the niche of Stem Floral Design. Robin Weaver, the floral designer and owner of Stem, started her company five years ago following 20 years of “playing around” with flower arranging for her own enjoyment. Taking a floral arranging class at CPCC elevated her expertise and confidence. With her husband Steve’s encouragement, she stepped out in faith and launched Stem.

Stem Floral Design is a small, home-based business and does no advertising or promotion. Robin enjoys working with friends and friends of friends when they are hosting an event or party: brain-storming, planning, creating … this is all part of the process when designing floral arrangements for an event. Robin also works with a few non-prof-its in the Charlotte area by donating floral arrange-ments for their fund-raising events.

An added bonus for Robin is that her husband is an avid gardener and landscape designer. She has an amazing array of greenery and flowers in her own yard to supplement the flowers she purchases from her wholesale supplier. And watch out! Some of her Piper Glen neighbors have seen her in their yards snipping a few pieces of green-ery she needs for an arrangement.

This past November, Robin tackled her biggest project yet: a rehearsal dinner at Charlotte Coun-try Club that included 30 arrangements! Weeks of planning, getting ideas from Pinterest, and working with the client all came together for a beautiful event. The bride was able to use many of the ar-rangements for her wedding the next day.

When an event is over and the client doesn’t want all the arrangements, Robin will repurpose the flowers by dividing them into several smaller arrangements. She then delivers these flowers to friends and neigh-bors that are sick, going through a rough patch, or just to give to someone to brighten their day.

Robin claims that her floral business is truly a bless-ing in so many ways. Arranging beautiful flowers, meeting and connecting with many interesting peo-ple, and then seeing it all come together to make an event or party truly special. Feel free to contact her for your next special occasion, small event, or party!

EXPANDING OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL

In addition to doing their part in helping to improve reading proficiency levels in Charlotte’s classrooms, CWC members have enjoyed reading on-on-one with students and the bonds they have formed with the children. The reading program is now in its third year. The Carolina Women’s Club also fundraises to send working single mothers to college by partnering with Answer Scholarship and is involved at Safe Alliance, Second Harvest Food Bank, and other local grassroots organizations. During the luncheon, Dr. Cooper-Lewter’s keynote address focused on Expanding Opportunity for All. She shared the work being done across Char-lotte with the focus areas of early care and educa-tion, child and family stability, college and career readiness, social capital, and the impact of segrega-tion on economic mobility. With somewhere between 3,000-4,000 nonprofits in Charlotte, she encouraged us to partner for impact. She also shared her own personal story and how the power of education and connecting with others – especially those that may feel invisible – can make a difference. The Carolina Women’s Club will continue to make a positive impact for women and children in need in the greater Charlotte area through hands-on com-munity service, fundraising and keeping abreast of key socioeconomic issues in the Queen City. Dr. Cooper Lewter’s remarks will influence their strategic planning for the upcoming year. To learn more about the Carolina Women’s Club, please go to carolinawomensclub.com.

The CWC kicked off the new decade by inviting Stephanie Cooper-Lewter, Ph.D., Executive Director of Leading On Opportunity to give her state of the union update on economic mobili-ty in Charlotte on January 8, 2020. “We invite key leaders to speak to our members to both inspire us and keep our finger on the pulse,” said Heather Gravelle, Vice President of Philanthropy. This is the third time the group has heard from key leaders from Leading On Opportunity (www.leadingonopportunity.org) over the past seven years and it has absolutely influenced their philanthropy efforts.” When Dr. Ophelia Garmon-Brown spoke to the Carolina Women’s Club in October 2017, she challenged the club to stay involved and look for opportunities to join forces and make a difference. “Our members respond-ed by designing a sensory Zen Den at Florence Crittenton to help some of our most at-risk women and children in Charlotte have a safe space and to learn techniques to deal with the challenges of toxic stress. Additionally, our members joined forces with Read Charlotte and started reading weekly to kindergarteners at Renaissance West STEAM Academy,” said Gravelle.

Just before the holidays, Piper Glen Living invited “Moms of School-Aged Children” to a luncheon at Zinicola’s in Ballantyne Village. We were joined by Nicole Vieira (The Daily Details beauty bar), Patty Moreira (Fusion Academy), and Rosania Wood (ABBS Cleaning Solutions). Here’s what some of our lovely guests had to say about their visit.

I’ve been a patron of Zinicola’s numer-ous times and have always had a great experience. Yesterday’s lunch was no exception! I enjoyed the salad and pizza. It was fresh and flavorful. It was also nice to meet and mingle with the businesses that sponsored the luncheon. Nicole Goson

I enjoyed the menu and the staff was very pleasant. I will definitely return to the restaurant. The food served was wonderful and provided enough variety for the group. The pizza and Panini were both wonderful. I thought all three of the women busi-

ness owners were engaging and very interesting. I know that I will become a patron of some of them. Megan Serbin

Thank you, Terry, for inviting me! Thank you for the wonderful gift cards, too! I am looking forward to using them. I thought the beet salad with walnut encrusted goat cheese was delicious. I would go back for that for sure. The margarita pizza was authen-tic and tasted great. I will likely call ABBS Cleaning Solutions and will visit The Daily Details beauty bar. I took a brochure about Fusion Academy for a friend who has a special needs child. Elisa Metzcus

I really enjoy Zinicola’s! The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is enjoyable. Our Piper Glen Estates holiday party for 70 guests was held there recently. The sponsors were all lovely. I especially enjoyed seeing Ni-cole from The Daily Details as I have

been to her salon. I am interested in ABBS Cleaning Solutions and may reach out to her after the holidays. Patty shared on Fusion Academy very well. I was intrigued as I have not heard of this unique school.  Bethany Khashman

Thank you for coordinating the Piper Glen Mom Event yesterday. I look for-ward to building friendships with the amazing Moms of Piper Glen. Zini-cola’s Italian Restaurant is a lovely upscale establishment with a great selection of foods with fresh ingredi-ents. I plan to try them out for dinner! It was great getting to meet Zinico-la’s chef and owner, Richard Cramner, and we appreciate his hospitality! Patty Moreira Director, Fusion Academy

Getting Ready For Spring

By Bree Parks, Piper Glen resident

During the cold grey days of winter, I long for the hope of spring, seeing the life that lay dormant blossoming its beauty into the days. I often question if it is time to move back to Florida and complain to my “Charlotte-tian” husband of how much I hate the grey days of winter. He reminds me of the beauty that can be found in the grey, but it doesn’t help this spring-loving woman. So, I focus my thoughts on how to create the “art” of spring in my own yard to be enjoyed the rest of the year. Sort of a “Build it they will come” mentality. I dream of the kids and grandkids running around outside, play-ing, laughing, and all of us joining in a family meal feeling so happy at what art was created!

The creative juices begin to flow as the decision on the theme is in the works. Once I have solidified

the theme, the next step is design-ing the pattern of my vision. This includes calculating the best layout to present the “art” of this year’s spring. It also includes the clarifi-cation of what plants, trees, shrubs,

and flowers have “aged out,” not like us over 50 are considered to be in the United States. It has to do with the root system, the color of the blossoms, and the drought resistance level.

I make sure to have all of this decided by late February when the actual re-landscaping and planting occur. It always feels so good to get rid of all the old mulch, dead trees, plants and shrubs and replacing them with new plantings, my ver-sion of spring cleaning.

Finally, March arrives – the beginning of the big reveal!

“Spring unlocks the flowers to paint the

laughing soil” Bishop Reginald Heber

Reasons To Visit JAPAN RIGHT NOW!Visiting Japan today is a total celebration of marching to the beat of your own drum – whether that drum is Harajuku-styled, robot-themed, or culturally timeless. Plus, citizens of many countries can visit Japan for up to ninety days without a visa. So here are my reasons to visit …

The food is even more adorable than you’ve imagined Cute food is an integral part of the culture here in Japan and some-thing the Japanese wholly embrace as a part of life. The masters behind the industry of cute are those in the kitchen. Handily, rice also serves as the perfect material for crafting adorable treats.

Get weird, get wonderful This is a country where, if you like a particular type of furry animal, there’s probably a cafe dedicated to it. In fact, themed eateries are pretty normal here.

Explore the manicured ... Most people who visit a Japanese garden describe the experience as utterly serene and tranquil.

The Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi is the perfect place to start. The gardens there have been described as a “Living Japanese painting,” never to be seen twice in quite the same way. The Kawachi Fuji Gardens in Kitakyushu will have you convinced that you’ve entered a fairy wonderland.

The totally un-manicured Mother Nature smiled on Japan, bless-ing it with some of the world’s most magnificent vistas. Taking in Mt. Fuji in spring and summer and visiting the cherry blossoms in March and April make these some of the best times to visit Japan.

Technological greatness Japan today is one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world. To immerse yourself in that rich and complex history, visit the towering Himeji Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place that UNESCO calls, “The finest surviving example of early 17th-cen-tury Japanese architecture.”

Discover real Japanese food Try out a ryōtei, a luxurious and traditional restaurant, and one of Japan’s centuries-old establish-ments. Or, for more of a modern take, hit the streets and explore the many mobile food vendors serving Japanese street food. Better yet, jump on a street food tour and discover hidden gems in suburbs it would take you years to discover otherwise.

A different kind of scenery The areas surrounding Tokyo are packed with visual delights, but the best view is almost certainly of the Shunan Industrial Complex. Boat tours can take you around to the best photo spots, or you can take the ferry to Otsu Island and capture shots along the way. While taking photos of an industrial complex may seem odd at first, when you see the stark, mechanical architecture beautifully illuminated against the night sky, you’ll understand why tourists are signing up en masse to get a glimpse.

serving our own...

THE MEGGS FOUNDATIONThe foundation is a nonprofit corporation established pursuant to the North Carolina nonprofit corporation act for the purpose of providing supportive resources for those with life-threatening medical conditions.

Our friend, Daniel Meggs, is battling cancer and we are hoping you or your organization might be willing to help. Daniel is currently 29 years old. Two years ago he and his wife Jordan were given the heartbreaking news that Daniel had stage four cancer. In an effort to help assist the Meggs family and raise funds for Daniel’s continued chemotherapy, upcoming surgeries and constant medical and hospital care, we have established a nonprof-it organization called THE MEGGS FOUNDATION. We are asking if you would be willing to join our efforts and provide support for Daniel and Jordan.

To date, we are planning two fund-raising events:

1. A Bingo fundraiser at TPC Piper Glen on Saturday, February 22, 2020

2. The first annual charity golf tour-nament called “THE MEGGS” to be held at TPC Piper Glen on April 13, 2020

The board of directors for The Meggs Foundation includes Richard and Gunnel Greenhagen, Jeff and Kate Lee, John and Kathy Ragland, and Eddie and Carol Winslett.

We are seeking donations in the form of gifts for adults and children for the February Bingo event. In addition, we are looking for individuals and businesses who would like to partici-pate as sponsors in our April golf charity event.

To help with Daniel’s medical expenses, a GoFundMe page has also been set up. Please con-sider donating at: www.gofundme.con/f/daniel-meggs

To discuss your future involvement, contact Richard Greenhagen, The Meggs Foundation president, or any of The Meggs Foundation board of directors. We appreciate your consider-ation in helping the family of Daniel and Jordan Meggs.

Kindest Regards,Richard GreenhagenPresident, THE MEGGS FOUNDATION704-579-7469

WHY IS IT SO

DIFFICULTMONEY?TO DISCUSS

O ur finances are arguably one of, if not the most important, life-altering… and uncomfortable areas of our lives. Much

like politics and religion, money can provoke a variety of emotions in us in a split second. Yet, unlike other deeply personal topics, we don’t find ourselves chomping at the bit to bring up our finances with friends in conversation. In fact, many Americans consider money to be the most difficult topic to broach with others, espe-cially those with whom we’re in close relationships. But why?

Many theories have been proposed on this subject. For many, myself included, we were raised to believe money is an impolite topic, not for discussion outside of the most private of situations. For others, it’s what money symbolizes: power and control, secu-rity and independence. The fact remains, money is an emotion-ally complex subject, grounded deeply in our ideas of self-worth and security.

Still, all evidence points to the fact that not freely communicating with loved ones on this topic can lead to negative consequences for our emotional, physical, and social well-being. The good news is, though it may cause discomfort at first, only positives can come from opening ourselves up to dialogues around money. Where to begin?

Family and Friends. It all starts at home. Researchers have found that growing up in a household where frank and open discus-sions around money occur results in adults with far less impulse spending and credit card debt. Further, by involving friends and family in your financial arena, you take advantage of the “village” of knowledge available to you and, consequently, are better pre-pared to tackle those important money decisions yourself.

Partner/Spouse. Recent studies show that more than 40% of American couples don’t discuss how their finances will be managed before tying the knot. Yet money is also cited as a top stressor in romantic relationships, right up there with sex, parenting, and careers. We all want to rest assured we’re making sound financial decisions, and joint decision-making results in fewer financial risks. Enlisting your partner in financial decisions will lead to positive outcomes, such as more transparency in your relationship and fewer precarious economic behaviors.
