PIPELINE PROJECT: NEAH BAY 2017

“TELLING OUR STORIES, IMAGINING OUR FUTURES”

Be part of an exciting long-term project working with Native youth in Neah Bay. Pipeline is recruiting members now for the 2017 team!

This collaborative project is built on a longstanding partnership between UW’s Pipeline Project and Neah Bay Elementary School and has been developed to address a community-identified need. The result is an exciting new project that will focus on encouraging Neah Bay students to envision their futures. The goal will be to not only have Native students see themselves pursuing higher education, but learning, as early as fifth grade, of career paths that could ensure their being able to live and thrive in Neah Bay after graduation. Using oral histories, digital storytelling, and photography, UW students will learn about the rich history and culture of the Makah people while mentoring 5th grade students in the creation of a digital storytelling that celebrates their Native culture and identifies pathways to meaningful careers in their own community.

This is a rewarding two-quarter commitment for winter and spring, including spring break!

* Weekly seminars winter and spring quarter (day and time TBD by cohort) to learn about revelant issues, reflect, and build project

* Connnect with experts in the field

The Pipeline Project is recruiting a diverse and engaged team of 6-8 students to take part in a two-quart long project with students from the Neah Bay Elementary School. Please review the overview of the project on the Pipeline website for a complete description and dates of the activities. ****To participate in this project you need to be available Winter and Spring quarters, including the week of spring break (3/19-3/14). ****

Please answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper. You may answer each question separately or compose a short essay that addresses all four. Responses should not exceed 3 pages. 1. Why are you interested in this project? What are your goals (academic and personal) and how might participating in the Neah Bay Project further those goals? 2. What experiences do you have working with children? 3. Please descrbe one experience living or working with diverse populations? 4. An important part of this project is the UW student team. What personal characteristics (talents, skills, knowledge, etc.) do you have that will contribute to the team aspect of the Telling Our Stories project? 5. Digital storytelling (video/film creation) will be an important part of this project. This is not a prerequisite for being included in the project.
