Advanced Pressure Testing (APT) with Acoustic Temperature Measurement
It is difficult to accurately measure leakage on large pipe volumes during pre-commissioning pressure testing. For polyethylene pipe, a period of time must elapse to avoid creep (pipe expansion due to pressure) affecting the measured pressure. Small fluctuations in temperature can also mask pressure changes resulting from leakage.
The pressure test software has built-in creep compensation algorithms, based on sound knowledge of polyethylene behaviour.
Benefits:
Fast accurate testing
User friendly laptop based operation
Simple hardware installation
Automatic test certificate generation
Up to 95% saving on test time
Earlier leak discrimination
The advanced pressure test system operated by PMI measures the temperature change of all the air in the pipe using acoustics. A loudspeaker and microphone is placed inside the pipe and a pulse echo technique is used to measure the sound speed. The speed of sound varies with temperature, which is used very effectively to determine average changes down to 0.001c. This data is then used to compensate for pressure readings.

Case Study: British GasCommissioning of 3km of a 250mm diameter polyethylene gas main
Project:
A new 250mm (10”) gas main, length 3km (2 miles) required a pre-commissioning air pressure test.
Equipment Utilised:
Advanced Pressure Testing (APT) with Acoustic Temperature Measurement
Purpose:
The standard pressure test for this installation indicated a conditioning time (to allow for creep) that was close to 100 hours and a test time of 186 hours, giving a total test time of around twelve days. In contrast, the APT system could provide a radically more time efficient alternative.
Process:
The acoustic system compensated temperature from the start of the period and also logged the pressure during the pressurisation process.
A leak of 0.28 scmh (10scfh) was identified after one day and repaired by the second day. The third day showed a continual pressure drop, but when corrected for the falling temperature the curve was flat, indicating no further leakage.
Results:
Current UK standards demanded conditioning time plus test time – 288 hours
Temperature compensated test completed – 72 hours
During the test one leak was found and repaired
Conventional testing would require the test to becompleted then repeated
Over 200 hours of saved time
Improved reliability over conventional tests
Resource effort per test reduced typically by 75%

Tight Fit Lining System
Rapid, cost effective installation of tight fit lining systems
Market Potential:
The process has been used to protect and extend the useful life of pipes in a wide range of industries including gas, mining, oil fields, potable water, municipal sewer sys-tems (force mains), and many other types of industrial applications.
Liner pipe being pulled through the die
Liner pipe being pulled through the die
Cutting Edge Technology:
This type of technology has been used around the world to extend the working life of new and existing pipeline systems by inserting a polymer liner into the host pipe. The lining process was originally devel-oped in the late 1980’s and has been improved upon ever since. No other tight fitting polymer lining system has been so thoroughly tested or so widely proven by actual use. In fact well over 1000km of pressure pipe in sizes up to 60” have been lined by this process.
Tight Lining is an outstanding trenchless technology, particularly in crowded, or environmentally

Equipment Utilised:
A ground-breaking replacement project to rehabilitate approx. 240km of 39” to 42” Potable Large Diameter Trunk Mains with 1030mm SDR51 PE 100 Polyethylene Pipe, utilising a Tight Fit Lining technique. The existing water pipes feed the vast majority of United Utilities customers in the North West of England.
Since the pipes were installed up to 130 years ago deposits of iron, which occur naturally in raw water from their upland reservoirs, have built up on the inside of the pipes. Although these deposits are not harmful to health, they can result in discolouration of the drinking water, hence the need to clean and refurbish the insides of the pipes.

Case Study: Largest Diameter Project in UK
Results Thus Far:
To successfully plan and manage thelargest diameter project ever attemptedin the United Kingdom.
To overcome the operationaldifficulties associated with largediameter pipes and fittings, includingthe development of a prototype all-terrain, self-propelled 100 tonne winch.
To build an effective workingrelationship with the main contractorBalfour Beatty.
The Challenge:
Approximately 8km, or nearly half of thepipe to be swaged in the first phase, hasnow been successfully completed, includingmeeting initial operational challenges to theprocess.
Individual pulls in excess of 800m have beenachieved.
Despite the urban location of some sectionsof the pipeline, the work has been carriedout with minimal disruption to the localcommunity.
We have built an effective workingrelationship with Balfour Beatty, whichaugurs well for the future.
The magnitude of this project required PMIto successfully develop safe and efficient op-erations for the re-lining of the existing largediameter pipelines. This goal has now beenaccomplished.

Case Study: Tight Fit Lining of a Cast Iron Water Main
The Process:
The Tight Fit Lining process uses PE pipe which has an outside diameter slightly larger than the inside diameter of the pipe to be lined. The PE pipe is pulled through a die to temporarily reduce its out-side diameter. The reduction allows the PE to be easily pulled through the host pipe by a winch. When the pulling force has been disconnected the PE pipe begins to return to its original diameter. However, just before the PE pipe relaxes complete-ly it presses tightly against the inside of the host pipe, eliminating the annular space to form a tight fit liner.
The cast iron host main was lined using a structural liner. The new PE pipe provides a main that can withstand full line pressure irrespective of the host pipe condition.
Results:
“Tight Fit Lining the 12” CI water main was a great suc-cess......we worked closely with the team and managed to quickly eliminate the risk of further costly bursts on this main. The technique allowed us to excavate three reception pits which minimised disruption and let traffic on a very busy road flow in both directions.”
“The project took just five weeks to complete.....but for this technique....the road would have been open cut, greatly causing traffic congestion and would have taken at least six or seven weeks.......and additionally we had very minimal amounts of muck away to landfill.”

“Barhale is a partner company in the Optimise joint venture delivering part of the AMP5 capital programme on behalf of Thames Water. PMI were the lining subcontractor for Barhale Optimise on the recently complet-ed the relining of a 24” water main on the Seven Sisters Road, Tottenham, North London. The project commenced on the 25th July 2011 when trial holes and open cutting through a park section took place. PMI had a technician on site from the beginning of September and the butt fusion of the 560mm PE Pipe commenced in Mid September. The Lining of the 24” cast iron main commenced on the 28th September and was completed on the 27th October with 1.250km achieved within that time frame. The lining was achieved in 4 “pulls” with the longest approx 460m. By using this technique it allowed for a larger diameter PE pipe to be used and to line under St Ann’s road railway bridge were the 24”main was made up of cranked joints. This method also allowed for the lining of the 24” main over the highroad junction and through two 11 1/4 degree bends. The technicians on site were very committed and worked tirelessly to get the job completed on time” - Enda Murphy, Site Agent - Barhale

“We had a problem with a section of gas main feeding our site which was in need of replacement. The line is a 20” sched 40 line with a design pressure of 70 barg. To cut out the line and tie in a new section in the conventional manner by shutting down, depressuring, and purging the line would have involved a total site outage which commercially was not feasible. By carrying out two hot taps the new section could be tied in to the existing system with no interruption to production. The site had done some hot taps before but never at this pressure so there was considerable nervousness about doing the job this way. PMI professionalism in providing technical re-assurance and in the way they organised and executed the work ensured that a potentially hazardous job was done safely and to the appropriate engineering standard.”

Case Study: GUL Inspection of Refinery Pipelines
Client Comments:
Approximately 80 GUL shots were carried out on anumber of different sized pipelines at strategic pointswithin the refinery. In total around 3kms of pipelineswere tested. Areas of concern were highlighted andfurther investigated using standard UT equipment.
An excellent overall picture of the condition of thepipelines within the refinery was achieved and follow upinspection and maintenance programs were put in placeas a result.
Results:
“What amazed us was the amount of pipeline that was inspected in a relatively short period of time. We could never have inspected almost 3 km’s of pipeline in this period using just standard Ultrasonic techniques. At least this way we were pointed to those areas of concern which was key in maximising our resources.”

Epoxy Repair System For Repairing High Pressure Mains by the Safest, Best and Cheapest Method
The Epoxy shell repair system comprises two half shells which are joined to encircle the damage, leaving a large annular gap. This gap ensures that even severely distorted pipelines can be repaired.
The shells have the same thickness and grade as the pipeline and are at least one diameter longer than the damage.
The ends of the shell are sealed with a putty material and the cavity injected with a high stiffness epoxy grout.
The repair prevents radical bulging associated with damage failure.
It also sheds stress into the shell, which reduces both cyclic stresses near the damage and hence locally increases the pipeline’s strength and fatigue life.
Benefits:
It is a simple, rapid, proven and safe repair method.
The damage is fully restrained.
No welding is required on the live pipeline.
The annular gap between the pipeline and shell is large, which simplifiesthe manufacture and eliminates fit-up problems during installation.
Technique has a sound track record.
