PIPELINE IT-REPORT 2 | 2012

This July, the gas transport company ONTRAS GmbH commissioned their new digital reporting system for pipeline inspections DMP. DMP is now an integrated part of the PMS pipeline management system, which is ONTRAS’ customer-specific adaptation of the Geo-NAM platform.

DMP has been in use since 2004 for managing data from airborne pipeline inspection, facilitating data exchange between inspection pilots and the pipeline operator. The inspection pilots create geo-referenced reports and use DMP to send them to ONTRAS’ main-tenance supervisors. ONTRAS personnel can then edit the reports, plan appropriate measures and give feedback to the pilots.DMP has a client-server architecture. The server component handles data synchronization between the pilots’ client software and the PMS system. For this purpose, the data from airborne inspections is stored on an FTP server. The DMP server component regularly fetches this data and stores it in a data base accessible for the pipeline maintenance supervisors. The supervisors can then display the inspection infor-mation on a map as well as edit it. The map material is also accessible offline in order to allow for working with patchy network coverage.

DMP inspection reports include information on the location, the history and the degree of urgency of the issue detected. The history information helps detect changes in the state of an issue that has been monitored for some time. Pipeline issues that can be detected by airborne surveillance and reported to the maintenance supervisors include, for example, unreported digging activity or visible loss of pipeline cover.

Maintenance technicians can reply to inspection reports and add notes or instructions. If an issue does not require further action, they can close the report.DMP comes with data analysis and reporting functio-nality. Reports on individual issues can be written to PDF files, including a more or less extensive selection of data, history information and a map plot. This can be useful for planning and supervising appropriate measures. The PDF files can be stored audit-proof in a document management system. DMP is designed for handling bad network coverage by making the data accessible and editable offline and starting online synchronization as soon as the network is available again.

dual documents or serial letters. Besides paragraphs of text, tables with asset data can also be generated.

Regulatory compliance with GeoNAM

In developing GeoNAM, one of our most important goals is to support network and facility operators in achieving and documenting regulatory compliance. We have implemented many aspects of the guide-lines issued by the DVGW( German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water) to improve

This year’s gat Gas Industry Conference took place on 25th and 26th September in Dresden. Key issues of the conference and exhibition included the trend towards alternative sources of energy as well as gas safety. How is the gas industry going to shape itself to future requirements in the context of alternati-ve energy policies, market regulation and existing legislation? Gas companies wish to take an active role in the development of “Power to Gas” technologies and are busy developing new, innovative ideas for the future with its expected legal, political and tech-nical developments.GEOMAGIC also had a booth at the gat exhibition, presenting solutions for software-based integrity ma-nagement. We had a lot of lively and interesting con-versations, exchanging ideas on operating conditions, methods for integrity assessment, revision procedures and regulatory requirements.

Generating documents: Template func-tionality using Microsoft Word

GeoNAM helps simplify everyday processes such as replying to external inquiries and digging requests. Office personnel can access all the required informa-tion via our software, and answer inquiries fast and efficiently. GeoNAM’s automated document generati-on speeds up the workflow by providing configurable combinations of ready-made text modules. Additio-nally, all stages of this process are easily traceable via the GeoNAM system. In order to generate Word documents from Geo-NAM, an administrator first defines the required text modules and arranges them into any number of do-cument templates. All users with the required access rights can then use the templates for creating indivi-

network and facility safety.GeoNAM is an ideal tool for making internal pro-cesses more efficient and compliance more easy. Regulatory requirements can be met in a flexible and adaptive software environment. GeoNAM helps you keep track of the flow of information and document it to external agencies, as all relevant data is accessib-le in one system. GeoNAM helps you work transpa-rently with sensitive infrastructures and data.

GeoNAM Reminders

In order to integrate business processes not mapped by the GeoNAM internal workflow, we have im-plemented functionality to create Reminders. If you quickly need to assign a specific task, you can set up a Reminder for a colleague. Reminders are treated as a type of GeoNAM Job, including a due date and a person in charge. They are displayed on the start page of the person they have been assigned to, color-coded for the degree of urgency. This helps you to keep track of small tasks and to supply deliverables on time. Reminders are stored in the GeoNAM data base and can thus be easily documented. History data is provided. Assets that have Reminders attached are also marked in the Asset tree to help avoid redundant Jobs.

LaRA – Improved start page

The start page of the land rights application LaRA has been remodeled to resemble popular e-mail and task management applications, making it easier to spot new and due jobs. Each user can customize their start page via filter functions. Team leaders can see all their team’s jobs at a glance and plan their time accordingly. The jobs displayed can also be moved or assigned to different users.

LaRA – Dynamic Report Designer

You probably know how much you paid in compen-sations last year –but guess you need a quick and easy way to find out which portion of this money is related to which line? The Dynamic Report Designer in LaRA has been implemented to allow just this kind of research and to export the results of your custom queries to Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets. Each user can save and reuse their own queries. The Report Designer works with queries in the fol-lowing main object categories:

 Agreements

 Land register entries

 Droits

 Parcels

 Administrative units

 Lines or line sections

 Persons / Owners
