GEOMAGIC’s MapServiceSOM lets you integrate geographic data services from various providers into the Small-world GIS. You can access third party maps as well as additional functions such as geocoding, reverse geocoding and elevation profiles directly in you GIS. MapServiceSOM automatically queries the external map services for available layers, which can then be selected from the Smallworld GIS. Users need to display map layers from different sources in the same coordinate system, so MapServiceSOM provides a high-quality transformation function in case the target coordinate system is not supported by the external provider. Compliance with all applicable regulations and terms of use for each map service is ensured via adaptable configuration options. All maps that can be displayed are also available for plotting. MapServiceSOM is compatible with GE’s Smallworld Internet Application Server (SIAS) and GeoSpatial Server (GSS), as well as with GeoNAM version 1.0 or later and LaRA 2.0 or later. GEOMAGIC’s managing director Dr. Andreas Hartke will give a talk on this new interface at the Smallworld User Group conference in Lübeck.

Dear readers,

The new issue of GEOMAGIC’s Pipeline IT Report brings you in-depth information on new developments in our products and a preview of this year’s events. We present our new GIS map service interface “Map-ServiceSOM” as well as the re-structured information view in the GeoNAM asset management suite. Check out our events – maybe one of them provides the right opportunity for you to meet us. GEOMAGIC is hosting Pipeline Integrity workshops at the PTC in Berlin and

at the Digital Engergy International Software Summit in Rotterdam – join us for insights on how best to en-sure safe, failure-free and economically viable pipeline operation.Have a pleasant read, and feel free to ask for more information or to give feedback.

All the best, Madeleine Cords, Marketing and Communications

2. The new information view: clear, quick and intuitiveThe GeoNAM information view is being used in an increased variety of customer processes. GEOMAGIC has decided to adapt the user interface to these new challenges, re-structuring it and making it more intuitive and user-friendly.

The search functionality has been significantly improved, now including spatial search options in addition to search options for alphanumeric data. Both types of search criteria can also be combined. You can conduct a spatial search for four types of criteria:

Addresses Coordinates Current map section Custom search geometry drawn on the map

Figure 1 - Combined alphanumeric and spatial search

Page 5: Pipeline IT-Report 01-2014

PIPELINE IT-REPORT 1 | 2014 5

The new information view provides more space for defining search criteria, and also for displaying the search results. The search result table now uses the full width available beside the search tab. If a search result is se-lected, the corresponding data is displayed in a separate tab to the right of the map view. This means that the search result list is available even after an individual result has been selected and examined. The selected search criteria, the result list, the map view and the object details can now be viewed all at once.

The integration of the document management system (DMS) has also been improved, making up-to-date as-built and schematic plans available to the users at all times.

Key improvements:

More intuitive user interface, optimized for left-to-right reading

Search mask, search results and object details visible independently of each other

More room for the search result list

Combined search using alphanumeric and spatial criteria

 Improved DMS integration

Gasunie has been active in the German market since July 2008. When Gasunie took over the operation of BEB’s transport network, the IT infrastructure for geo-spatial data was strategically developed. Using the Smallworld GIS and the NRM Ferngas application, data integration was promoted, and more business proces-ses could be managed within the IT system.Gasunie’s requirements for the management of pipe-line construction projects pointed the company to-wards GEOMAGIC’s land rights management applica-tion LaRA. LaRA holds both Gasunie data and German official land register data in the form of the Automati-siertes Liegenschaftsbuch (ALB). The official land regis-ter data was used to establish a link to the Smallworld GIS and to the cadastral data of the Automatisierte Liegenschaftskarte (ALK).

Data from in-line inspections of about 3,600 km of pig-gable pipelines was integrated into the GIS, opening up the way for managing pipeline integrity business processes in the unified IT environment.Since 2012, Gasunie has been using GEOMAGIC’s trascue.PIMS in-frastructure, which provides comprehensive condition and risk assessment using the assessment algorithm defined by Gasunie. The location data for large parts of the gas transmission network was improved for use in pipeline integrity management by conducting land surveys and using IMU pigs.

In a further step, data from CP close interval surveys will also be integrated into the IT environment.“By integrating data from different sources into a uni-fied system, we get an overview of our network’s si-tuation and can analyze all the data together. This is an important benefit of our current IT environment,” explains Dirk Vahlbruch, GIS project manager at Gasu-nie Deutschland.

The work management suite GeoNAM played an im-portant part in creating acceptance for the integration of various business processes. In a first step, GeoNAM was introduced as a web-based network information system for 60 users. The second step was last year’s successful addition of the GeoNAM External Inquiries module for managing dig requests.

“GeoNAM has really improved the acceptance of GIS-related products in our company. On the one hand, it provides quick and easy access to the data. On the other hand, the External Inquiries module has signifi-cantly improved our working speed,” says Dr. Klaudia Lohmann, IT executive and project manager at Gasu-nie Deutschland, who has been GEOMAGIC’s partner since 2011 and is already planning joint projects for the year to come.

Looking back on four years of successful cooperation with Gasunie Deutschland, Jens Focke, Head of Sales at GEOMAGIC, says: “With our latest joint project, we have again demonstrated that our strategy of develo-ping targeted, market-specific software products and creating synergy effects for related projects is the right way to go for meeting pipeline operators’ require-ments for their IT environments.”

5. Single-stop service for support and quality

management

GEOMAGIC’s support and quality management activities have been inte-grated into a new team. Support requests for all products will now be analyzed and attended to by the support team, which will also coordinate resulting tasks for other company divisions. The new team is headed by Dr. Hannes Moser. Hannes Moser joined GEOMAGIC in 2010 as an applica-tion developer and has lately been managing a number of Smallworld GIS projects. Our customers’ IT landscapes are becoming increasingly complex and diverse. The new team has been created with a view to better coordi-nating individual system components and their interactions. “Combining support, quality management and application management into one team will provide our customers with an optimized range of consulting and sup-port services,” says Hannes Moser.
