BOARD’S NEWS AND VIEWS PIOPIO COLLEGE

BOARD TRUSTEE PARENT REPRESENTATION:

At the Board Meeting of March 29, 2016, the following motion was put. "By resolution of the Piopio College Board of Trustees, the number of parent elected members on the Board will reduce from 7 to 5." Moved: Jaqui Taituha ; Seconded: Steve Rickards - carried TRUSTEE ELECTIONS: In June this year, schools throughout New Zealand will be holding Trustee Elections. Piopio College has 3 vacancies to fill, so I encourage you, should you be interested in becoming a Parent Trustee on the Piopio College Board of Trustees, to find out as much as you can about what Boards do, and the roles and responsibilities of being a Trustee. We will support you in finding out about the work of the Board by placing information in College Newsletters next term, and also by holding some meetings to share information and answer any questions you may have. Watch this space! Should you wish to become a Board member please ensure you are nominated; our Returning Officer, Alida Baker, will call for nominations as from May 6, 2016. We are seeking to fill 3 parent trustee vacancies, and 1 staff trustee position. Should the Returning Officer receive more than 3 parent nominations, an election will be held at which time, eligible parents will then vote through an election process. Likewise, should more than 1 member of staff be nominated by staff, an election will be held for staff to vote in a staff trustee. Timeline:-

ICAS TESTS

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, skills-based

assessment programme which recognises and rewards student achievement.

The programme has been running for more than 30 years. Every year 1 million student entries are

accepted from over 6 300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. Students from over 20

countries participate in ICAS each year.

Piopio College students have the opportunity to enter these external tests and sit them at the College.

The following tests are available:

Yesterday Marcus from Defence Force came to speak with myself and interested students about what the Forces offer. Eleven students ranging from Y8 to Y13 sat in the Student Centre and listened and asked questions. Students can enlist once they are 17 years but they can begin the on-line application process once they turn 16.5 years. The Defence Force train people for over 100 different trades. Marcus stressed that they look for strong Maths and Literacy skills.

Army interviews for 2017 take place in July and August 2016. Three brochures were left and they’ve been placed on the Careers Stand in the foyer of ‘A’ Block. Marina Rauputu

SCIENCE ROADSHOW

Every two years the College hosts the Science Roadshow for surrounding schools. Their massive truck

disgorges 20 different hands on exhibits involving a range of science topics. All Y9 and Y10 students

attended and tried out activities such as measuring how

fast they could throw a ball to identifying the hearts on

display (from as small as a bird to as large as a horse).

Twelve of our Y7 students acted as demonstrators

explaining the exhibits in their area – they were an

awesome team and contributed to a great impression

made on the visiting schools. Well done team.

AGRICULTURE NEWS Piopio Wire Runners the heat is on! Friday Futures tried their hand at laying a fence line in the hills of Mahoenui last Friday. Getting ready to lay out battens on a new stretch of conventional fencing with one electric wire Creston and Te Kohuai know that something’s and four battens between posts not right here!

Behind the scenes at the NZ Shears held at Te Kuiti, Piopio College students do their part to keep sheep up to the wool handlers and shearers. Over eleven students spent Thursday and Friday helping out plus a few really keen ones on Saturday as well. LIMITLESS HOLIDAY PROGRAM This program is run for all Y6-Y8 students. Each school is invited to put in teams of 8 to 10 students. TAINUI WAKA KAPA HAKA PRIMARY SCHOOLS FESTIVAL MANIAPOTO A hui has been set for Thursday 7 April 2016 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at the Ngati Maniapoto Marae Pact Trust on the corners of Sheridan and Taupiri Street in Te Kuiti. The hui is to be held upstairs in the Conference Room. This hui is to gauge whether or not Maniapoto will have enough support on the ground to host the above hui which is going to be held in October – November this year. McGEOUGH, SUSAN The staff, students and Board of Trustees of Piopio College acknowledge the passing of Susan McGeough. We extend our condolences to Martin McGeough and his family on this sad occasion. Martin is a member of the staff at Piopio College and his loss is felt by all in our College Community.
