It was great to see our kura alive with excitement and to see their creativity shine at our workshops. We hope this will spill into next year. Thank you to all who came. We also welcomed Year 7 Parnell students to our kura today. We were thankful for their generosity when they hosted our Year 7s earlier in the month and we were pleased to be able to express our gratitude today. A big thank you to the Napi Napi Marae Commit- tee for hosting the Parnell students this week and also to our students and their whānau who helped. We are very appreciative of their support. Fundraising We have recently received a grant of $4,000 from the Waitomo District Council to put towards a playground for our Year 7-8 students. This is a project driven by the PTA and we are seeking a further $40K to add to it. The PTA will be fundraising continually for this and would love the support of the community. They are currently running a raffle, with tickets available from local businesses in Piopio. We are also fundraising to upgrade our courts. They have become unsafe for use and we would like to lay down tiger-turf. Sports Co-ordinator Carolyn Webster is taking on this project and has already secured a $500 donation from the Piopio-Aria-Mokau Co-operating Parish. We are very thankful for their generous contribution. Final Assembly and Prizegiving. MERITORIOUS ACTION

Listed below are the names of students who have received acknowledgement of

the many good things they have done.

Winner of a canteen voucher this week is Shaun Purdie for following instructions to completion from Whaea Tanz.

Potahi McTainsh, Petra Mackenzie, Manukura Ngawaka, Shaun Purdie, Nikau Rickards,

OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS There is an extremely large amount of overdue library books. All books need to be returned to the library ASAP. If you have borrowed any books, please have a look around your home as well as school, and your classrooms and return as soon as possible. If they are not returned, they will be presumed ‘lost’

and you will be charged for replacement copies.

PIOPIO COLLEGE COURTS Our netball/tennis courts are no longer safe for use by our students. They have cracks running through them with grass etc starting to grow. Areas are in constant shade, puddling with rain and become very slippery. Leaves from nearby trees fall constantly, decompose and create a slimy surface. Therefore the school has decided a full makeover is needed. The trees are going to be removed, the courts will be resurfaced and lighting added for night games and practices. The school wishes to make the courts more available to the wider community. Netball, tennis, basketball, rugby, hockey, football and any other com-munity groups would have access to the courts for their games and to meet their training needs. This however will not happen over night, and entering into the new year fundraising ventures will be undertak-en and grants/funding applied for. Any donations would be gratefully accepted. It is with gratitude that I thank the Piopio All Saints Church for their donation of $500 (from sales made at the Mustard Seed Opportunity Shop in Piopio). Such wonderful support helps a small community stand strong and meet the needs of all it members, young and old. If you would like any further information regarding the courts or have any fundraising ideas please contact me by email [email protected] or phone 027 230 6101. Carolyn Webster—Sports Co-ordinator

TOUCH RUGBY On Monday the Cougars played TKP Bulldogs. Unfortunately a number of players were away welcoming the Parnell students so we only had six players and struggled to put attacking plays into motion. We lost 7-0 but I am proud of our team as we continued to play hard for the full game. Carolyn Webster—Sports Co-ordinator

THANKS Piopio College would like to say a huge thank you to Jocelyn Chambers and her son Zac for donating a trumpet and guitar for the music students to use. The Year 8's have been the first to experience playing a trumpet and amidst much laughter many discovered a natural talent for getting a note out of it. I'm sure it will inspire students to learn a brass instrument next year. Thank you so much for your kind and generous gift. Lyanne Walker—Music Teacher
