For a quarter of a century, they and numerous others have contributed to the romance of the growth of the paper divi- sion of the Brown Company. When the Riverside Mill started on July 2, 1892, W. E. Corbin was machine tender and E. S. Hannaford was back tender on Machine No. 1, while John Gullison had charge of the wood grinding room. These men have supplied some very interesting in- formation regarding the early days and the first crews. If a knowledge of the past is necessary for an understanding of the present and for a vision of the future, surely the story of those early days is one that ought to be recorded. When we are inclined to think that the world moves slowly and is very imperfect, it is well to take a look backwards over the roughness of the path that has been traveled. For after all our road is much smoother, and we owe a debt of gratitude to those men, named and unnamed, who have blazed the way, and what has been accomplished should be an inspiration to each of us to make the future better than the present. In 1888 the Riverside pulp mill was started. It was rated as a fifty-ton ground wood mill and had seventeen wood grind- ers. On December 20, 1888, John Gullison hired out under James Parker, superin- tendent of woods, and worked for seventy- eight days up on the Cambridge, that puts into Lake Umbagog. John had always W. E. He was told that the company had just built a pulp mill at Berlin, and spruce that could not be used in the saw mill could be made into pulp. At that time the spruce was much bigger and no fir was mixed in. In 1890 John went to work in the old River- side pulp mill under E. J. Bonett. Mike McGee was master mechanic.f and later took Bonett's place. In 1892 some of the grinders were moved across the river to the new Riverside paper mill and while Mike McGee had charge of all the wood grinders at both the pulp mill andjthe paper mill, John was foreman of the paper mill end and later took Mike McGee's place. John stayed with the ground wood until at the building of the Cascade mill, his mechanical ex- perience was needed with the millwright force there. W. E. Corbin start- ed at the Riverside paper mill May 27, 1892. He was then twenty-three years old and had had five years at the old Gov. Cheney mill at Man- chester. This was aik excellent mill for ex- perience because it made all kinds of paper; news, box lin- ings, hangings, book,, manila and several1 specialties. Orders were small and often it ran only a few hours on one kind of paper. After a year as third hand, Mr. Corbin became back tender. PIONEERS OFTHE RIVERSIDE

The Insurance Companies rightly demand thatsmoking be forbidden in the mills. While mostmen obey this ruling, there are some who are notso inclined and sneek an opportunity to hide insome corner and take a chance of causing a firefrom a lighted cigarette or pipe. We wonder ifthey ever consider what it would mean to thempersonally, should a serious fire occur due totheir disobedience.

In the event of a fire causing the mill to shutdown, the company would be protected from lossto a great extent by the insurance carried for thispurpose, but who will pay your wages during thetime needed to make repairs and get the millstarted again.

Many things may happen to cause fires andthrow you out of work. Is it not foolish for a manto add to this danger for the sake of a smoke ?

SULPHITE MILLFIRE DEPT.

The chief, and in his absence the asst.day chief under orders of the engineeringdepartment, is in full charge of all fireapparatus and is responsible for its con-dition.

He is to respond to all alarms of fire,both day and night.

In case of fire, asst. chief and men areto work under orders of chief.

Pump men. Start pumps and remainat pump until relieved.

Hose men. Report to asst. chief ofshift.

Inspector to make necessary daily re-pairs to apparatus, see that hose is inplace, hydrants and sprinklers in order,and report any defects in apparatus di-rectly to chief.

On Thursday, 10 a. m., of each weekfiremen are to make test of apparatus,not over three quarters of an hour intime, under direction of chief, includingactual fire stream when weather is suit-able.

All firemen will be provided with badgesand helmets.

Location of hydrants and hose lineswill be put on boards in the time officeand in machine room.

In case of fire, mill whistle signal willbe blown as follows:

Log pond—Two short blows repeatedthree times.

West side of mill—Three short blowsrepeated three times.

East side of mill—Four short blows re-peated three times.

In case of fire on night shifts, machineroom foreman of shift is to detail a manwith key to be stationed at the gate oppo-site storehouse, also at bleachery gate,and the digester house foreman is to de-tail a man for similar duty at west sidegate. These men should see that nobodyenters but firemen and employees.

In absence of a shift assistant chief, theman who is his substitute will take hisplace.

On Sunday nights or shut-downs, whenasst. chiefs and hosemen are not on duty,the man in charge of digester house,

either Rogerson, P. Ellis, Teeling, or J.McKelvey will act as asst. chief, and willuse any men on duty as hose men.

In order that all who may act as asst.chiefs may become familiar with appara-tus, they will rotate in fire practice andbe notified by tickler when their turncomes.

In case of fire, the shift electrician incharge will stand ready to cut out anypower lines when requested by chief orassistant.

Fire chief will be provided with aschedule for fire practice, and when alarmblows men will respond as in case of fire,and time required to get on stream willbe noted.

calling him, however, Mr. Corbin learnedto run the machine without him and atthe age of twenty-one became machinetender. He came to the Berlin MillsCompany two years later, because hecould get $3.00 a day instead of $2.50. OnMay 27, 1892, Machine No. 1 was still incrates in different parts of the yard. OnJuly 2, 1892, the mill started with every-body grabbing paper for souvenirs. H. P.Cheney was superintendent and Mr. H. J.Brown was manager. In October, 1893,Cheney left and before a suitable outsideman could be found Mr. Corbin was giventhe position on trial. In 1894 he becamesuperintendent of the Riverside pulp mill

as well, and when the Cascade mill wasbuilt Mr. Corbin was given new respon-sibilities.

Ernest S. Hannaford came from the oldGovernor Cheney mill at Manchester,where he had acted as back tender forMr. Corbin. He also started work on May27th and for the first day carried a linefor Mike Foster, machine erector for theBagley and Sewall Company. Mr. Hanna-ford received $1.75 a day to start, thesame wages that he received at Man-chester, but he wanted a change andBerlin is nearer his old home at North-umberland. Mr. Hannaford has alsogrown with the Company and now hascharge of the paper department at theCascade.

The initial operating conditions werevery different from present practice. Thesources of power were steam from saw-

mill waste and slabs and the waterwheelsstill in use at the Riverside, but to be dis-placed by the new hydroelectric develop-ment. There was no need for immensepiles of coal. Electric power was usedfor lighting only and strange to say wasgenerated from an old Ball engine now inuse at the Cascade. Groundwood pulpcame from the Riverside pulp mill andfrom the wood grinders in the mill itself.There were six grinders in the paper milland seven in the pulp mill. For a timesulphite pulp was bought outside. TheBurgess started that fall. Sulphite pulpwas really kicking the slats in its cradle.In fact, the text-books tell us that Chas.S. Wheelwright made the first commercialsulphite pulp in America at the old Rich-mond paper mill in 1882. The mill beganon news, the two 101-in. machines beingrated to run 300 ft. a minute. The day li

that the speed went to 325 ft. a minutewas at the time reckoned one long to beremembered. Yet when the Riversidestopped making newsprint, paper wasrunning 500 ft. a minute. This increasewas due to improvements in machinery,involving longer wires, extra presses, andincreased dryer capacity and to increasedexperience on the part of the crew. Anexample of the greenness of the crew isrelated by Mr. Corbin. "The first nightI told Mr. Bixby, the oiler, to keep every-thing cool with oil. In the morning Iasked Mr. Bixby how things had gone.He said, 'Everything went fine exceptthose dryer boxes. I couldn't keep themcooled down, if I went to the dickens!'"The mill was run on the two-tour systemand there was no spare help. In case aman was out it would mean a 24-hour runfor his mate. The three-tour system camewhen the Cascade was started. The 164-in. machines installed were the widest inthe world for a five-year period. And theBerlin Mills Company was quick to graspthe advantages of the three-tour systemin connection with the use of big ma-chines. The Berlin Mills Company wasone of the first to adopt the three-toursystem. In 1892 there were three menon a machine at the Riverside, whereasnow on the same machines four men anda broke man make a machine crew.There were no tour bosses and no nightboss. At that time the newsprint madeat the Riverside went to the ChicagoNews, Detroit Journal, and IndianapolisNews. During the Chicago World's Fair,the Riverside supplied paper for theChicago Inter-Ocean printed on the Fairgrounds. In 1910 the Riverside beganmaking Kraft and in 1916 the first bondwas made.

On another page there is a picture ofthe first operating crew at the RiversideMany of the names of this crew havebeen supplied by " old timers." In somecases parties interviewed have not beenabsolutely sure of certain names. TheBulletin will be glad to receive the namesthat are left out and to make corrections,where needed. At another time we hopeto have pictures and recollections fromother Riverside pioneers. Geo. Murrayat the Riverside time office drove a team,when the mill was erected, and he hadone particularly nervous horse that noone else could drive. James Stewart, nowtour boss at the Riverside, started in atthe old pulp mill in 1888 and is the oldestman in paper at the Riverside. Alec

Murdock has been engine man at theRiverside ever since it began and was inBoston the day the picture was taken.He has good reason to remember the oldAtlas engines then in use. C. P. Kimballof the main office began in 1893, and wasbookkeeper, timekeeper, shipping clerk,purchasing agent and storekeeper. Fred

Sylvester at the Cascade was also one ofthe first employees at the old pulp mill.John Gullison has brought in a picture ofan old pulp mill crew and the Bulletinwill be grateful to those who will volun-teer to furnish further information beforeit is published.

Such were the wordsof James Joseph Malloy to a boy, whocalled to ask him why there were no itemsin the Bulletin from the blacksmith shop.And as he talked, one knew why it wasthat out of the Berlin Mills blacksmithshop have gone some of the best black-smiths that New England has producedand why our own blacksmith shop is thebest place in New England for a man tolearn his trade. Jim's grandfather was ablacksmith, his father was a blacksmith,

Washington would open his eyes if heshould lead his milk-white charger intoJim's shop. And if he did, the horsewould be shod by an expert, Anthony J.Dunn, who was on the Grand Circuit forseven years and shod Dan Patch andother fast ones.

Jim Malloy came to the Berlin MillsCampany in 1889 from the Grand Trunkshops at Gorham. Even then the shopwas an old shop dating back even of theincorporation of the Company in 1852. Inthose early days it was known as the oldWinslow shop and was patronized by far-mers who brought oxen and horses to beshod and carriages to be repaired. Jimsays that the shop is now eighty-five yearsold.

smiths, who worked from 6.00 a. m., to6.00 p. m., with forty minutes for dinner.Today twenty-five men make a full crewand although they have power shears anda steam hammer and two drills, theyoften have to work overtime to do thework required.

Jim talked wistfully of a new shop witha heating oven, which on heavy workwould accomplish with one heating whatoften requires fifteen or sixteen heatingson a forge. "But," said Jim, "with pres-ent construction work under way, wecan't have everything; we've got to doour part and stagger on."

After working for the Berlin MillsCompany a short time, Jim went back tothe Grand Trunk for a brief period. He

and today Jim is boss of the best stockedshop north of Boston; a shop that hasplayed an important and essential part inthe development of the great Brown Com-pany, for which we are all proud to work,and which today, heavily overloaded, isresponsible for a part in every undertak-ing. For variety of work done, our shopis unequalled. In it are made side by sideat times small markers for sealers andhuge railroad frogs. The shop is now re-sponsible for forge work involved inlocomotive, car, and automobile truck re-pairs, for mill work and bridge work andfor the making of toggle and slip-noosechains and other things used in riverwork. In fact, we imagine that George

In 1889 the heaviest anvil in the shopweighed 125 Ibs.; today there are nineanvils, weighing from 300 to 345 Ibs.There were three forges operated by oldhand bellows; today there are elevenforges with draft from power blowers.The first fan was put in the machine shopin 1892. Then they used hand drills andhand gaggers. There were no horsestocks. The work was mostly sawmilland river work, although then as nowthere were horses to shoe, to say nothingof the loquacious and stubborn mulesused to draw cars upon a railroad (\Y2

inches wider than U. S. Standard Gauge)on which all the locomotives were hay-burners. Then there were three black-

returned soon, however, and in 1891, whenPalmer was killed, he took charge of theshop and has been boss blacksmith eversince. Palmer's death occurred beforethe " Safety First" movement had muchsignificance. A box full of dynamite, un-fortunately containing a fresh cap, hadbeen brought up from the river andplaced near the fire to thaw. Straw pack-ing caught fire and Palmer in taking thebox out was caught when the cap detonat-ed the dynamite. Since then the shophas been haunted. The brave blacksmithsare not much afraid of the ghost, but ithas been seen by boys and others. This,however, is a story of its own and we'llsave it for another issue.

Under Jim's direction was forged theiron work for the steamers Diamond andBerlin, designed for service on LakesUmbagog and Parmachenee. The shophas also played a part on the companyrailroad, such as the change to standardgauge, the building of the rainbow trussbridge at the neck of the bottle. Therainbow truss bridge has an interestinghistory. In 1873 it was built by the GrandTrunk Railroad to span the Peabody riverat Gorham. When it was replaced thereby the present one, Mr. W. R. Brownbought it and it was put in place of theold wooden structure that we then usedfor a railroad bridge. All the first workfor the Cascade railroad was done at Ber-lin Mills, though now the Cascade has itsown shop. All the early Burgess shafting

an interesting collection of marking axesand picaroons. One of these can mark alog with the letter "H," the company'sbrand in the United States, while anothercan scar "Q. I. C.," the mark used inCanada, which reminds one of the timewhen the Brown Corporation was theSt. Maurice and Quebec Industrial Com-pany. Jim shows with pride a huntingknife, forged out of a single piece of steel.The mate to this knife won "first prize"at the St. Louis Exposition.

At the blacksmith shop there is a spiritof team work. On the night of August3rd, a fire gutted the place. Jim was thereimmediately after the alarm, using cottonwaste in every place possible to save thebabbitting of the steam hammer andshears, and they were saved. Important

was welded in the old mother shop bymeans of a forge fire and a hand-ram.From Jim's description a hand-ram ap-parently works on a principle similar tothat employed by the Indians, when theyused logs to batter in the doors of earlyNew England blockhouses. Instead, how-ever, of being carried at full speed on theshoulders of Indians, it was suspendedfrom the rafters. Equally lusty effort wasrequired, however. During the periodsince 1891 the sawmill has been rebuilttwice.

Not only have methods for handlinglarge work undergone improvement, butriver tools as well have changed. Thecantdog of 1891 was crude as comparedwith the modern peavey, invented, Jimsaid, by a man named Peavey. Jim has

work had to go on. The blacksmith crewworked nights at Burgess and Cascade,until they could go back to their ownshop, prepared to do its work, but stillcharred in many places. That's what wecall loyalty, not of the lip sort, but thereal stuff, that's found in the whole BrownCompany organization.

For ten years Jim gave boxing andgymnasium lessons up where the storenow is. Among his pupils were the lead-ing lawyers and professional men of thetown. Under his tutelage Battling BillDooley was trained. And today Jim couldgive boxing lessons four nights a weekand not feel it at all.

A GOOD THINGIf, after thinking it over a long time,

you have ever decided to "take that in-surance policy the agent told you about,"if you have filled out the application,made the first premium payment, had thedoctor examine you, and, if after all that,you have been told that you were declinedby the Insurance Company because of thecondition of your health, you have prob-ably felt as Fred felt the day I met him,on his way home from work.

"And the worst of it is," he added ashe finished the story of his troubles, "Icould have gotten the insurance last yearwithout any trouble, but I just put it off."

So far as I could see Fred looked aswell as he had ever looked. I asked himif he had been thinking of dying, since hetook this sudden interest in life insurance.

" No," he answered, " I don't expect todie, but you know the folks are pretty oldand I'm the only one they have to takecare of them. It's all right while I amhere, but I wanted to get some insurancefor them because you can never tell whatwill happen."

About two months later I had occasionto pass the factory where Fred works. Isaw a large white poster fastened to thedoor, and wondered whether they weregoing to have a dance or an entertainment. Of course I had to go over andread it.

" You are insured," the headline toldme. " The Metropolitan Life InsuranceCompany protects our employees—No medi-cal examination—No cost to you."

I wondered, then, whether or not thisincluded Fred, so I stopped in to see himthat night on my way to the lodge. " Youbet I'm in ^it,'" he told me. " Here's mycertificate—a t thousand dollars life in-surance—payable to my mother if I die,—and no medical examination," he con-tinued. "Of course, I haven't any thoughtof dying, but you know it's a sort of com-fort to know the folks would have themoney if anything did happen." I agreedwith him. It was a good thing.

Well, littleArthur evidently believes in "first aid"all right because so far this week he hasonly had a broken finger and I don't knowwhat kind of an elbow. However, he waswandering around the curve room thismorning so we trust he is being wellinursed.

Frank Ells of the Machine Room hasstarted through the wild woods of GatesHill shooting wood-chucks. He got somany that he will have a fur coat madefor this winter.

Amie Lavoie joined the Benedicts onSeptember 28th, and after returning froma honeymoon spent in Canada, the boysat the bleadiery presented Amie with ahandsome rocker. Accept our congratu-lations, Amie, and may all your troublesbe little musical ones.

"Why listen," said Delarge toBelanger," our outfit used to travel so fast that wedid not give the Dutchmen time to thinkwhat to do to escape us."

The sulphite mill fire department hasbeen somewhat remodeled and as may benoted in the mill directory, is now on amore permanent basis, certain men havebeen selected as volunteers in case of fireunder the direction of a chief and assist-ant chiefs. These men will be providedwith badges and will rotate in fire drillonce a week.

Briggs arrived in the engineering de-partment out of breath the other day andborrowed a boy from Ryan to go to hishouse and get his bag and overcoat. Wearen't of a very inquiring turn of nature,but since prohibition we have a most un-usual inquisitiveness, and also perhapsrespect, for mysterous bags and overcoatsbeing called suddenly into play. Wegumshoed after a traveling bag in thehands of a friend of ours the good part ofone night only to find out he was cartingsome preserving jars home to his wife.The time spent was for a good cause butwe were out of luck.

The Burgess band deserves credit fortheir work in the past. On every occasionit is up to the Burgess band to furnishmusic. They find it difficult to keep theband as it should be. Some of the mendo not attend rehearsals and when theyare wanted to play they are workingsomewhere else. Why not enlarge theband and not restrict the membership tothe Burgess. Enlist men from other millsof the company and men who will be onhand when they are wanted. This wouldnot mean that you could not play any-where else but to find out if your bandhas an engagement. As this is the onlyorganized band in town I think thesesuggestions should be considered and aBrowa Company band formed, and I amsure tie company would not see an or-ganization like this short of funds.

Briggs was gumshoeing around all dur-ing the World Series covering any kind ofa bet, good or bad. Most of them werebad, but this does not necessarily showpoor judgment—because Eddie Challouxwon most of his bets.

Jerry Cowie and Al Palmer were tellingabout the big crop of hay and potatoestheyAvere going to raise, but when Jerryand Al cut their hay and dug theirpotatoes they had about enough hay touse for pipe cleaners and Jerry's twinsare using the potatoes for marbles.

Albert J. Croteau of the machine roomdryer force, took a vacation last Augustat Milan Hill chopping wood and hayingfor his father-in-law.

A resounding war-whoop broke the"unusual" stillness of the engineeringdepartment recently. The cause for samewas the discovery by Mr. Stewart of a"sparkler" of most beautiful brillianceon the " right" finger of the left hand ofMiss Gillis. Although this has been ex-pected for some time, it nevertheless hadseveral gaping mouths and popping eyesfor a few moments. The congratulationsof the entire office force are extended toMiss Gillis.

The office force at Burgess have notmissed a ball game this summer; thatthey did not have to dig up any worn outexcuses of dead relatives, etc., commonlyused in big city offices; that there arefew offices that can boast of such gener-osity on the part of those in charge. Thehearty thanks of all the fans in the officeis hereby extended to those responsiblefor the many good games we have beenallowed to see this past summer.

Where is that feed that was guaranteedby the losers of the Mill League ? Elec-tricians, why not get busy? We alwaysthought you were good sports—we hopewe are not wrong.

On September 30th, in the year of ourLord, nineteen hundred and twenty, theGrumblenots planned the dedication ofthe " We-O-Na." This plan was carriedout, and in spite of the heavy rain storm,you could see the girls with heavy ladenknapsacks and " bumbershooots," trailingup Burgess street, not forgetting to stopat the East Side Bakery to purchase hotrolls and chocolate cakes. All set then,we started, except for " Boots" and" Smithy " hanging back to do justice tothe rolls just purchased.

As we approached the camp " Skinny "shouted, " Hey! kids, look at the light."On entering the camp the cracking of thefire told us that someone was there aheadof us, not Johnny on the spot, but thistime Joe. Joe who? Why don't youknow, Joe McKinnon, the proprietor andmanager of " We-O-Na."

When do we—what do we eat ? was thecry heard from the crowd. With Julietteas chief cook and bottle washer, the fol-lowing eats were prepared: Sweet 'taters,Hamburg steak and cranberry sauce, yaknow all good things to eat.

The " Porter " doesn't believe in " self-service," she served the " Butler." Hey," Boots " how do ya like it ? The fun for

the evening started with the most dra-matic love scene entitled "Romeo andJuliette " which was carried out in a pro-fessional way, why yes—something similarto " Fatty Arbuckle " and his ladies.

When everybody had recovered fromthat spasm, the next was the " SpanishFantasia," by Mrs. Ben. Oh, just onelaugh after another. We forgot all aboutthe time but realized that 7-30 came earlyin the morning. The girls left, callingthe party off until next week.

If you have noticed we have two eyes,two ears and only one tongue. Thismeans that we should always see andhear a great deal more than we shouldsay.

ment is going in training, she says, so shecan operate her new 18" carriage type-writer. The joints of this machine aresomewhat stiff and the springs good andstrong. The reaction is not very promptunder a delicate touch.

MacKinnon's camp has been the loca-tion for many a good feed recently."Joe" is not a bit selfish with this beauti-ful little spot he has made high up on theEast Side of the river. The view fromthis spot is certainly wonderful, both atnight and day. Messrs. Raeburn, Stewart,Ryan, Condon and Thayer had the pleasure of visiting with Joe recently. WithMac's stories of the "good old days,"Raeburn's funny yarns, Ryan's capacityfor grub and Stewart's non-alcoholic andcritical remarks on various topics of thepast, present and future, it certainly wasa night well spent. Condon tried toshinny up the big beechnut tree but

missed his footing and the tree shinniedup him, he says. His shins are stillaching. Ryan, being an ex-marine, andhaving climbed to the crow's nest manya time went up the tree like a wild cat.He sure fed us the beechnuts good andplenty. Condon couldn't seem to see whythere weren't more nuts on the ground.He claims that everything is back sidebefore anyhow lately and probably thesquirrels are too darn lazy to climb thetree after the nuts and only pick up thosethat drop.

The Burgess band played at the ballgame between the Braves and Nibrocs.Remarks were heard afterwards as tohow good the band sounded. Probablythere are few who know the hardshipsand difficulties under which this band islaboring. Many seem to think that allthat is necessary when music is desired,is to " Call out the band." Mr. Stevenswillingly agrees to play, and as directorhe is responsible for the quality of music

this band produces. Every band manwill tell you that as a leader the Burgessmill is certainly fortunate in having theservices of such an able musician as Mr.Stevens. But, he is not an Alladin. Hecannot rub his lamp and produce a bandout of nothing. It is probably not gen-erally known that the band is limpingalong now at rehearsals with one poortrombone, three cornets, one clarinet, onebaritone, two basses, one flute, and onepiccolo and base and snare drums. Wehave a director of the first class, as statedabove, and what we now need, to have afirst-class band, is one good tromboneplayer, one solo cornet player, one bari-tone player that the present baritone maybe shifted to first alto, and two or threeclarinet players. When the band goesout now, we have to scout around townpicking up here and there such parties aswe must have in order to produce anymusic at all. Suggestions from any quar-ter are solicited.

The new Blacksmith Shop, of brickconstruction, with painters' quarters andpaints, will make a worthy addition tothe mill quarters and buildings. You'llhave to get a white collar on, Pat, whenyou get in, and a boy to shovel the smokeout to maintain its present appearance.

The waxing and towel machines areworking to capacity, but we will enlargeif necessary. Paper making is our busi-ness.

The pipe line to the bleachery from thechlorine tanks sprung a leak and in spiteof the most careful manipulation ourpercent bleach was gaining groundsteadily. It reached a climax on thenight of the 13th and the trouble waslocated.

The cutter room has placed a largecutter in their room to take care of theimmense amount of business on Nibrocproducts.

The last issue of the Bulletin showed avery worth improvement both in newsand more especially in photos. The workwas very well executed.

An attempt to organize Associationfootball did not prove very successful andthe chief reason given was that they didnot know the game. The chances arethat nobody would know it till theyplayed some. We had a few of the OldCountry's players who were willing tostart the ball rolling but it lacked enthus-iasm in our otherwise popular athletics.

The new storehouse is commencing toloom up and will be a big improvementto the mill surroundings by its appear-ance.

Wm. Palmer took a trip to Brooklyn,N. Y., to see the World Series.

Newell Johnson and Mrs. Johnsonhave returned from a month's vacationspent at Atlantic City, N. J. Newellclaims that if he leaves Berlin he intendsto settle in N. J. Skeeters and other in-sects will have something to say aboutthat.

Harold Brakewood claims the honor ofthe first deer of the season among theResearch crew. It was a 230-lb buck.

Early one Sunday morning, while thevillage of Gorham was peacefully sleeping,a party of hikers appeared from Berlinand started down the Shelburne road,hoping to reach Bethel before sunset.The adventures along the way included apicnic lunch at Mr. D. P. Brown's farm,cider at Mr. O. B. Brown's, the capture ofa man, raids on apple orchards, andothers too numerous to mention. Arriv-ing at Gilead at 5.30, they found them-selves stranded. The train stopped onlyat Bethel, ten miles away, and at Gorham.There had been a fire in Gilead and thewhole town was all in, including horsesand vehicles. So the group promptlystaged a vaudeville show with singingand dancing to keep up their spirits, anddecided to look for a barn well paddedwith hay in which to pass the night. Butluckily this crowning adventure wasspared them by the arrival of Mrs. O. B.Brown's car, in which they speedily camehome, arriving in Berlin at 8.00 o'clock.Here they are; ask them about it:

MACHINE SHOPIra Garland, who has been away two

years, working with the Atlantic andPacific Shipbuilding Corporation at Ports-mouth, has returned to the machine shop.

Herb Kelley and Frank Perkins havebeen away on a hunting trip up back ofthe Percy Range. They got nothing, ex-cept that Kelley got tired.

In Joe Scammon's office there is apicture of an early machine shop crew.It is slated for early publication in theBulletin, and Joe has promised to tell ofthe part the machine shop has played inthe development of the Company.

BLACKSMITH SHOPJim Malloy has invented some very

useful tools, forms and dies the past fewmonths that have been a great aid to theboys in the shop in turning out iron to beused on car repairs. And he has a lot uphis sleeve yet that will open their eyes.

Fred Perkins is operating the steamhammer, and does very well on his newjob.

We are glad to see Roy Brown up andabout again. We trust he will be with ussoon.

Axel Johnson, the tall Swede helper, issurely the tallest man in Berlin. Axel isvery tall and Jerry Cantin is very short.Pat Collins asked Jerry how he would liketo box with Axel. Jerry replied that hecould chop the Swede down to his size invery quick time. More power to you,Jerry.

tive located at Chicago, visited Portlandoffice on business recently.

An impromptu outing down the harborwas enjoyed by about 25 members ofPortland office, Saturday afternoon, Sept.25, through the courtesy of Capt. Rowell.At 2.30 p. m., the Lewis L., our new tug,left the wharf and sailed for FalmouthForeside, stopping at " The Graunkar " totake aboard Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Brown.The sail was resumed as far as Yarmouthand then the return was made towardsPortland, arriving at the dock about 5.30p. m.

The craft is 65 feet overall and 14 feet,8 inch beam, and is newly equipped withtwo Mianus Deisel explosive engines of30 horsepower each, and twin propellers.The fuel used is 150° test kerosene, andwill burn a little less than a gallon perhour. She makes a very economic andseaworthy boat for the purpose intended.

Harold Chase, purchasing department,was in New York on a business trip.Mrs. Chase accompanied him.

On October 9th, Mr. and Mrs. Brock-way entertained the members of the ac-counting department and their families atthe annual outing held at Scarboro Park,Scarboro. Covers were laid in the dininghall for 60, and a most enjoyable dinnerwas had. The feature of the afternoonwas the ball game between the Sheep andGoats. The sheep won the game by ascore of 10 to 9. Entertainment for thechildren was provided for by Mrs. MaryA. Hocker, daughter of our host andhostess, and the kiddies appreciated herpainstaking care in keeping them amused.

I wish to locate in Maine andpossess executive ability. Have you aposition to offer ? " He evidently soughtto impress Charlie with his importance.

John Graff, Berlin photographic depart-ment, has been in Portland office the pastfew weeks making photographic recordsfor the Berlin office files. To one wholikes copy work it is an interesting pro-cess.

Carl Werner, paper sales division, re-ceived a letter the other day from Nashua,N. H., that drew a smile of happiness.Wonder who can be at the other end,Carl.

Leonard Stack, purchasing department,was in Bangor for a few days on business.

The auditors from Niles & Niles officein New York, are here for the yearlyaudit.

Tommie Churchill, pulp sales division,is spending his vacation with his folks atthe old homestead in Coaticooke, P. Q.Tom wrote they are having the excep-tional weather there that we are here, butthe evenings are kind of frosty.

Charles Safford, accounting department,has moved to the city from his summerhome on Great Diamond Island.

It is with deep sorrow we learn of thesudden death of Mrs. Edith King, wife ofHelo H. King, purchasing department, onOct. 23rd. Mrs. King was about to leaveon an automobile trip to the mountainswhen she was stricken, and expired with-in a few moments. It is a distinct shockto her many friends, and we extend toMr. King our heartfelt sympathies.

The advanced change in daylight savingtime in Portland, two weeks ahead ofschedule, caused two members of theaccounting department to arrive at theoffice on Monday morning an hour earlierthan usual, on account of their beingaway on vacations when the city fathersmade the change.

Gene Skillins, cashier, spent his vaca-tion at the Kearsage, North Conway, N.H. Gene says the mountain air is somedifferent from ours.

M. S. Flint, New York office, was inPortland office recently on a businesstrip.

John C. Sherman, advertising depart-ment, was in New York and Washingtonrecently on business.

W. B. Brockway has been called toWashington on company matters so muchlately that he feels like a commutor.

The retail department is sporting a newtwo-ton Pierce Arrow truck, for operationon heavier loads than the small truckwill carry. The cost of one shoe on thebig truck would keep a jitney shod for alife time.

Mr. John Kelsey of the traffic depart-ment, has been transferred to the positionvacated by Mr. N. W. Staples.

MY THREE OR FOURVOYAGES TO SEA

(Continued from October Issue)Well, as I said, the opportunity to go to

Frisco came and I took advantage of it.I signed articles on the S. S. Cottage City.There must be some readers of theBulletin who have seen the Cottage City.She used to sail between Portland andNew York. Well, she was going to thePacific to sail between Seattle, and I wason it. When we started, I intended to gothe whole way and a little further. I wasgoing to the diggings. We had the priv-ilege of staying by the ship or gettingpaid off at Frisco. Before we got toHatteras I had made up my mind Friscowas far enough for me. After a good fasttrip we arrived in Frisco. There weresix of us got our heads together and weshipped on the Oceanic of the Occidentaland Oriental Line, bound for Kobe, Yoko-hama. Nagasaki and Hongkong. Wemade a few trips across the Pacific andmade good money trading in dope. Thesedays when you hear a crowd of men talk-ing about dope, they mean almost any-thing from cigarettes and Jamaica gingerto wood alcohol, but in those days, dopemeant one thing, and that was opium.

I will give you another illustration ofthe handicaps American ships have tocompete with. This line was a branch ofthe White Star Line, English of course,the Belgic was in need of new boilers.You would think she would get them inFrisco, not a bit. She was sent to Liver-pool, England, but she never got there.She ran on the bar at the mouth of theMersey and was a total wreck. I gottired of the route and homesick for littleold New York, so I signed on the City ofPara. This was the same ship I sailed onfrom New York to Aspinwall. But thistime she was bound for Panama. I madea couple of trips on her and then decidedI wanted to see the route of the PanamaCanal. Three of us left the ship in Pan-ama and started across the Isthmus onfoot. The canal was not built then, butwe did see the ruins of Ferdinand DeLesseps. It took us four days to reachAspinwall, then the next thing was to geta ship to New York. Jobs were not veryplentiful, but seamen, when they want togo any place, do not stand upon ceremony,they just go, and that is exactly what wedid—we went to New York. I then joinedthe El Monte of the Morgan Line. Nowyou have read these pieces about me join-ing ships and signing articles. I will tryand explain that. When a man joins aship he has got to sign the ship's articles,that is, he has to sign a contract with theship; something like this: Voyage one

hundred seventy-seven, S. S. Sulphite, ofwhich the Brown Company are the own-ers. I, John Barleycorn, hereby agree tomake the round trip to the port of de-parture, etc., etc. In event of leaving theship at any port but the port of departure,I, John Barleycorn, hereby waive allclaims against said S. S. Sulphite or theowners thereof. Touch the pen. So yousee what you get if you fail to make theround trip.

I have also told you how we fed; limejuice on English ships to keep downscurvy. American ships, in some re-spects, are not much better. On Amer-ican passenger ships, if you are sick, youdo get a little attendance from the doctor.On cargo ships they have no doctor. Thesteward keeps the medicine chest and ifyou should happen to break a leg, hewould give you a dose of castor oil or hotdrops. While I am on the subject, I willgive you another illustration of the diff-erence between Americans and foreigners.On the American, if after leaving portyou should be sick and not able to workuntil a day or two before the ship reachesher destination, providing that you didwork until she started on her homewardbound passage and then were sick againon the passage home, you wpuld receivefull wages for the full voyage, regardlessof who did the work. But the fellowsthat doubled their watches got nothingextra. I never thought that was a squaredeal.

Then, like every place else, the crewhave little spats among themselves oncein a while. Suppose an officer struck aman and the man turned around andgave the officer a good licking—if he werebig enough, the officer had no redressuntil the ship reached the first port, thenhe could have the man arrested. But thetrouble was generally forgotten beforethe ship reached port. I have never seenone man arrested. Now the English shipsthat I sailed on had a system of logging.What that really means is a fine for anydisobedience of orders. You would belogged one, two, three or as many days'pay as the officer felt like imposing. Ifthe officer was struck, the offender wasgenerally put in irons, but he surely waslogged one week or perhaps one month'spay. This depended a good deal on thelength of the voyage and the offender hadno redress. I understood that this loggingsystem was for the benefit of sailors'homes in different parts of England, butwho knows, I don't, and I always had theidea that a good many of those Englishofficers were more overbearing than therewas any need of, in fact I have seen themaggrevate men so much that there wasnothing left for the men but insubordin-

ation, with the usual, "I will log you."Well, after joining the El Monte, my

next was the El Mar, same line. I stayedon the El Mar longer than any ship I hadever sailed on, almost three years beforeI got my ticket. This ship used to alwayssail on a Saturday, at 3 p. m., from NewYork, and the Louisianna of the CornwellLine about the same time. This boat wehad nicknamed Lousy Anna, because wenever saw her leave port with her hull allpainted. She always looked half finished,but she could sail. As soon as the El Marand the Louisianna got outside of SandyHook it was the devil take the hindmostuntil we reached Port Eads, at the mouthof the Mississippi River. We have seenthem both abreast of each other and soclose together that you could read eachothers names on the port house. I neversaw the Louisianna pass the El Mar, be-cause the engineers on watch on the ElMar used to do the oilers' work as well astheir own and the oilers and the watertenders used to go into the fire room andhelp the firemen. We never set anynegroes on the safety valves, like theyused to do on the Mississippi steamboats,but we never let them blow off, and justlet me tell you from Sandy Hook to PortEads is some race, nineteen hundredmiles.

The boss calls it the " end of the fiscalyear," but November 30th is "JudgmentDay" for the Accounting Department.When the whistle blows on that day, theauditors come in, (some are here now)steal our cigars, borrow our tobacco, bor-row our matches, put on their big hornspecs, check up the books, draw a redline under the last book entry and say:

" Mr. Bookkeeper, time's up, you'redone for 1919-20. Where are all yourpapers and vouchers, if you haven't themall, explain to the big chief."

Now buddies, if you have borrowed anypapers or invoices from the AccountsPayable Department, get busy, dig themout and come across with them at doubletime. We like the big chief, but we don'twant to give him any explanations forborrowed property,

Forget thinking of what you thinkothers will say of you. Do the things youfeel are right. Why worry over whatothers think about your actions as longas you know they are based on yoursense of right ?
