NAP AND REST TIMES Any children that are staying for the extended day program will be offered a quiet/nap time that is age appropriate in the schedule for the extended hours.

will be the initial step to resolve any issue relating to child care. Biting, although usually a rare occurrence, can happen in a pre-school setting. It is our goal to address the biting while providing a safe environment for the children in our preschool. In general, the policy for biting is as follows: The biting child will be removed from the classroom and taken

to the director. Depending on the severity of the bitten child’s injury and the reason for the bite, the biting child may be re-turned the classroom or the decision to send the child home may be made. A parent-teacher conference will be called to schedule a collaborative meeting about the child’s behavior and to plan for appropriate actions and consequences.

If biting continues, the biting child will be brought to the direc-tor and the child will be sent home for the rest of the day. A teacher will try to shadow the biting child however that is not always possible when maintaining ratios. An adult may be asked to stay on the premises to help us maintain these ratios until we determine that the biting is no longer an issue. Parents will be advised that Pioneer Preschool may not be the best envi-ronment for their child unless biting behavior no longer occurs.

If there are more biting episodes, another parent-teacher con-ference will be called to discuss alternative care for the biting child and the possibility of the child returning to the program when the biting has stopped.

Parents will always be notified if any of the above disciplinary ac-tions were taken.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 1. Pioneer Preschool does not offer water activities such as swim-

ming at the preschool or on fieldtrips. 2. Pioneer Preschool does not accept children under 24 months of

age. 3. Pioneer Preschool does not offer evening or overnight child

care. 4. Pioneer Preschool requires any outside support staff for a child

to be certified/licensed for the specified needed aid of that child. 3

pare for their absence that day.

Guidance and Discipline Policy The following techniques may be used by all child care staff members as a means to guide and discipline children. Any technique or prac-tice used shall be developmentally appropriate, consistent ad shall occur at the time of the incident. 1. Setting clear limits. 2. Redirecting to an appropriate activity. 3. Showing positive alternatives. 4. Modeling the desired behavior. 5. Reinforcing appropriate behavior. 6. Encourage children to control their own behavior, cooperate with

others and solve problems by talking. 7. Separation for the situation, if used, shall last no more than one

minute per each year of the child’s age. Upon the child’s return to the activity, the provider shall review the reason for the sepa-ration and discuss the expected behavior.

8. Holding a child for a short period of time, such as in a protective hug, so that the child may regain self-control.

Should more aggressive, continuous behavior or aggression of any kind occur (i.e., hitting, kicking, biting, etc.) toward another child or adult, the child will be taken to the director.

When the child regains composure, he/she will return to the class-room.

When a behavior requires a change or modification to the typical classroom routine, a Parent Communication Form will be completed by the Teacher, reviewed with the Director and parents then signed by parents, teacher and Director. This form will have follow up steps and behavior expectations that will serve as a platform for continued parent-teacher communications. The Parent Communication Form

J. Sore throat or difficulty in swallowing K. Vomiting more that one time or when accompanied by any

other sign of illness L. Evidence of untreated lice, scabies, or other parasitic infes-

tations 4. A parent/guardian will be advised of illness by phone as soon as

possible and requested to pick up their child. The ill child will be separated from the class, provided with a cot and made com-fortable, and then remain with the director or assistant until the parent arrives.

5. A letter will be sent home to all classrooms to advise parent/guardian of exposure to a communicable disease. (i.e. strep throat or chicken pox). As well as an email from the Director.

6. The preschool will not administer any medication, food supple-ments, or modified diet unless it is required for a life threaten-ing condition. Administration of Medication form (01217 10/2016), signed by parent and doctor, must be on file and the medication and training provided. All medication must be in the original container. Also, Form 01236 (10/2016, Child Medical Physical Care Plan) must be completed and on file. Pioneer Pre-school will require school age children to follow this rule.

7. If a student becomes sick during the school day, the student will be brought to the Director’s office, kept away from the other children, and the parent(s) will be called to come pick up their child as soon as possible. We will make the student comfortable and provide a cot for the student to lay down on if needed. If a parent can not be reached, calls will be made to the Emergency Contact names listed on the Enrollment Form until a pick up person can be reached.

8. Upon pick up of an ill child the parents will be notified that the child cannot return to school until they are free from symptoms, including diarrhea, fever, and vomiting for at least 24 hours. In the case of lice, scabies or other parasite infections, the child must have treatment to eradicate the parasite before returning to school.

and cognitive development. Age appropriate activities incorpo-rating fine and gross motor skills, combined with language, art and music experiences will help each child to develop a love for school and learning, as well as a positive attitude and self confidence. Our Christian emphasis will be developed by creating a loving, nur-turing environment that is enhanced by meal time prayer, good role models, and the celebration of the Christian holidays.

doors, greet families and then lock the doors at a designated time. If you are late for pick up, you will need to sign in, ring the white preschool buzzer and the director will meet you at the door to let you in. You will then need to sign back out.

FIELD TRIPS Field trips are taken only by the Pre-K classes. The 2 and 3 year old classes do not leave the church property. Field trips are intended to enhance the children's learning experience as well as to help them develop self-reliance and expand their interests. The following poli-cies were developed to make each field trip the best and the safest it can be. Written permission will be required for each field trip. Each child will wear an identification tag with the school name,

address, and phone number. Field trips are for children enrolled in Pioneer Preschool only. In

order to maintain the required student/adult ratio and for the safety of the enrolled children, siblings may not accompany par-ent helpers on field trips.

Children will be transported by their parent or can privately ar-range a carpool.

Parent volunteers are expected to remain with the class and will be responsible for more than just their own child. NO CELL PHONES USE PLEASE!

Field trips are a group experience. If a parent feels uncomforta-ble with their child going on a field trip without them, they may keep the child home that day. Parents should not drive their own child on the trip with the intention of staying with them.

A staff member trained in first aid will accompany the children, and the first aid kit will be available. Emergency forms and health records will be taken on each trip and drivers will be asked to make their cell phone numbers available for emergen-cies and communication on the trip.

7

As the school year approaches the end, each class of the 2’s and 3’s will take in-house field trips to the rooms of the next age level. They will see the classroom and meet the teachers, explore some toys, and perhaps participate in a story or another activity. Parents of our PreK are encouraged to take their own field trip to the local kindergarten in their area for a short orientation since there are too many schools for us to visit.

The last day…. On the child’s last day, the 2’s and 3’s class will have a picnic and play games outside if the weather permits. The children will receive an “end of the year” gift and a certificate of completion or a diploma de-pending on the age of the child. The PreK classes will join together for a graduation ceremony and receive their diplomas for completion of the PreK program.

TRANSITIONS In the beginning…. Tours – Children and parents are encouraged to visit during school hours. They will have the opportunity to tour the facility, meet the teachers, gather information and ask questions, and see the program in action. The director will be able to show the school, explain policies and curriculum, and briefly get to know the parents and the personali-ty and developmental level of the child. Tours are scheduled 9:30-11:00 Monday thru Friday. Registration - Children will be registered for the appropriate aged class unless approved by the director. Any decision to move ahead or to a younger level will be made in a conference held with the parents, teachers, and the director. The move will not take place unless all parties approve. Children will remain in this class (2’s, 3’s, PreK) for the entire school

8

year. An individual child will NOT move ahead when he /she has a birthday. The entire class (those children whose parents complete the formal registration process for the next year) will move ahead to the next level at the beginning of the next school year. Orientation Week – Visitation Day and Parent’s Night are scheduled at the beginning of each school year to make the transition into Pio-neer Preschool a little easier for everyone.

All Parents are invited to Parent Orientation Night held in early September. The children at each level will then spend Visitation Day with a parent in the classroom ~ meeting the teacher and making new friends, learning the routines, and replacing some of their anxieties with excitement and antici-pation. Visitation days vary by classroom. Refer to days and times in your start up letter mailed to you in August.

Separation – Separation issues are handled on an individual basis. Teachers and parents will discuss an acceptable way to help a child make the transition into preschool. If the teachers are unable to console a child and help him/her to become involved in the class-room, a parent will be called. Classes for the first week of school for the 2’s and 3’s are scheduled for two hours which is a half hour shorter time period to allow both teachers and children to get back into the school routine.

FORMAL ASSESSMENT POLICY All parents will be asked and encouraged to complete an Ages and States Assessment (ASQ-3) on their child and turn it into the Direc-tor prior to the first day of school. This assessment form will be giv-en in August at Packet Pick Up and provides the teacher with valua-ble insight into each child’s development. All assessments are scored by the Director with copies of the scoring given to the teach-er. The information we gather is NOT reported to ODJFS per code 5101:2-17-02. It is only used for lesson plan purposes.

TUITION POLICY Tuition for the fall term is due on July 1, winter term tuition on De-

5. The fire escape routes and weather alert plans are posted in each classroom.

6. An incident report will be completed when an accident or injury occurs to a child. A person who picks up your child, parent or care giver, will sign the written report and receive a copy. Please check your child’s book bag daily for any reports like this if you are not the pick up person. You will also receive an email or phone call from the Director that an incident report was sent home and notify you of the person who signed the report.

7. Spray aerosols shall not be used at any time when children are present at the preschool.

8. The administrator and each employee are required to immedi-ately notify the local public children services agency when they suspect that a child has been abused or neglected.

9. We have 30 minutes of Gross Motor play each day in our large gymnasium.

10. Once the children have been marked in as “arrived”, at no time will a child be left alone in classrooms, hallways, or the gym. A teacher, hall monitor or the director will always be with them to supervise their activities and guide them in appropriate pre-school behavior.

ENTRANCE POLICY We will be a total “Lock In facility” during school hours (9:00-12:30). All doors and windows will remain locked. The director will person-ally open the front door in the morning and greet families then lock the doors at a designated time. If you arrive late for drop off, you will need to sign in in the binder and ring the white preschool buzz-er and wait for the director to open the door. You then need to sign back out. You are always welcome to come see your child at any time during the day, just ring the buzzer and we are happy to let you in. At the end of the school day, the director will open the

please email the director with these addresses. The teachers and the director are available to answer questions in person or by telephone at (440) 498-1983 or by email at [email protected].

CONFERENCES Conferences will be held once a year with parent and classroom teacher (and director, if requested by the teacher or parent) to dis-cuss the child’s behavior, progress, social and physical needs or any other pertinent matter. These are typically held in the Spring. The conference should be in person unless a phone conference is the only possible method. All conferences will be documented on a designated form and are kept confidential. A copy of this form is available to the parents. If a teacher feels that a referral is needed for your child, you will be contacted by the teacher to set up a meeting to discuss . Referrals are based on numerous teacher observations and documentation or a period of time.

SAFETY 1. At no time, is a child to be left alone or unsupervised at drop off

or at pick up. The children are the responsibility of the parent or carpool person, and must be supervised by them. The gym is closed before and after school and at lunch time because it may be used for other programs. Children should be escorted to the classroom by the parent at the beginning of school each day. Siblings or care givers under the age of 18 years old should not escort any student to the classroom. A staff member should be present before the departure of the parent. At the end of the day, the children will be released from the classroom or desig-nated area to the parent or carpool person only, unless written permission has been given. Teachers are required to document the arrival and departure of each child on the prescribed attend-ance form. Parents must always make sure that the teacher is aware of the child’s arrival and departure.

Invoices will be sent home in your child’s book bag for winter and spring term payments. If a check is returned for insufficient funds, the bank charge is parent responsibility. If payment and/or late fee is not received within seven (7) days of the due date, and other arrangements have not been worked out with the preschool, your child will not be able to attend class or register for enrichment classes until all payments are received in full. If payment is not received for Fall term by July 1, your child will not be allowed to start class and we will assume you are with-drawing them from the school. All outstanding payments need to be reconciled by April 1. If it is necessary for a child to withdraw for any reason during a term, the tuition will be refunded for the months the child did not attend. Tuition for partial months is non-refundable. (ie, if your child attends on 10/1 and leaves on 10/5, you still have to pay for the month of October.) Two weeks notice is requested for withdrawals to allow time for the classroom teacher to prepare for the child’s last day. Second Child Rate: If you have 2 children enrolled, you will pay a reduced second child rate on the youngest child’s tuition. See Tui-tion Cost Form for details. Every line of the Medical Form and Enrollment Form must be completed or acknowl-edged with a slash or N/A. Your current Enrollment Form (JFS 01234 Rev. 12/2016) needs reviewed and any changes updated during Par-ent Night and the 3rd page needs your signature every year. The prescribed Medical Statement (form JFS 01305 Rev. 12/2016) must be completed and on file on or before the first day of school or within 30 days from the first day of enrollment. All physicals must have been within 1 year and signed by the doctor to be accepted. Children whose medical forms expire during the school year will be notified by the director and must be updated within 30 days or the child may not attend preschool. We do not administer routine medi-cations or food supplements. We will administer emergency medica-tion once the Administration of Medication Form (JFS 01217) has been completed by the parent and signed by the doctor. ping them off has made different arrangements ahead of time. If the child does not arrive and has not been called in as ab-sent, the preschool will call the parents and let them know their child is absent.

PARENTAL PARTICIPATION Pioneer Preschool encourages parents to visit their child’s class-room at anytime for the purpose of contacting their children, evalu-ating the care provided by the preschool or participating in an activ-ity. Upon entering the facility, the parent shall sign in and ring the preschool buzzer to notify the director of his/her presence. The di-rector will greet you at the door and let you enter. There will be opportunities throughout the year to volunteer for classroom activi-ties, such as occupational play units, school projects, holiday par-ties, or field trips. Parents are requested to check their child’s mailbox and book bags daily and to frequently read the bulletin board located at the front of the school for additional information about the preschool, par-enting, or other social opportunities for families.

BREASTFEEDING For the comfort of our breastfeeding mothers, they may use the Teacher Lounge located across from the Children’s Library at any-time throughout the school day. A changing table is also located in the church nursery for your convenience. Please take all soiled dia-pers with you after each change.

COMMUNICATION In addition to receiving printed class information and/or various teacher classroom website communications, you will also receive a monthly update letter from the director with school wide reminders for the upcoming month. We are attempting to “go green’” by communicating as much as possible through email. Please remember to check your email. The email that we use is the one you gave us on the registration form. If you wish to provide us with additional emails for communication,

18

Consent to leave by taxicab: Parents agree to leave Pioneer Preschool by taxicab and to reimburse the school for the cost of the cab, when a staff member believes that the safety of the child is better served if the parent or carpool person does not drive.

Both parents’ right to pick up: Under the laws of the state of Ohio, both parents may have the right to pick up their child, have unlimited access to the Preschool, and participate in a conference with the child’s teacher unless a court document restricts that right. The enrolling parent, who chooses not to include the child’s other parent on the authorized pickup list, must file an official court document (e.g. current restraining order, sole custody decree, divorce decree stating sole custo-dy). Absent one of these documents, Pioneer Preschool may release that child to either parent, provided that parent docu-ments his paternity/maternity of the child.

Shared custody parental agreement: Parents will file a copy of the section of the divorce decree that delineates custody, and write, sign, and file a written agreement about their child’s pickup schedule and procedures. If a parent attempts to pick up the child on the other parent’s day, that parent must document the change in the schedule or file a revised agreement.

Car safety seats required: Children transported in vehicles must be buckled securely into car safety seats/seatbelts that meet the state requirements. Parents will take whatever steps are necessary to maintain and use car safety seats. An-other person on the authorized list will be called if this re-quirement is not met.

Authorized car pool list: Persons on the authorized list must be at least 18 years old and be able to supply documentation of their identity. Teachers will ask for ID of all car pool pick up people.

If a child is to arrive from a different program or activity, the child should be walked to the classroom unless the adult drop-

Children who do not have both of these forms on file in the Pre-school Office may not attend school until all paperwork is sub-mitted. All forms may be found on our website.

SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY Social Media, a term that encompasses blogs, microblogs such as Twitter, and social networks such as Facebook and YouTube, among others, is becoming a component of every day life. As the use of Internet search engines, blogs and social networks continue to grow, it is important to address potential safety concerns and to help ensure the appropriate use of social media, Pioneer Preschool has adopted the following policy, which applies to all forms of social media. Failure to comply may result in dismissal from our program and it is at the discretion of the director and preschool board to de-termine a course of action. 1. We do not permit photography/video of any child (besides your

own), parent or employee at Pioneer Preschool, to be posted on any personal website, blog or online social network. By signing the Photo Release Form you agree to have your child’s picture on the Pioneer Preschool Facebook and Instagram page. Names of children in our program are never used on these sites.

2. Defamatory, harassing, threatening, misleading, gossiping or invasion of privacy comments about Pioneer Preschool’s pro-gram, teachers or the director should not be posted. Concerns should be addressed directly with the preschool Director.

3. Teachers are not allowed to be social media “friends” with cur-rent families throughout the current school year.

TOILET TRAINING POLICY: According to the regulations of our ODJFS Day Care License, all chil-dren in our 3 Year-Old classes and up MUST be completely toilet trained. Only our 2 year old class is licensed as “Non-Toilet Trained.” The 2’s diapers are checked every hour and changed as needed. OUR DEFINITION of “POTTY-TRAINED”:

The child is able to use toilet paper as necessary and take care of his/her private needs without teacher help.

BATHROOM ACCIDENT POLICY: The teachers will give minimal assistance to any child who needs help in the bathroom and will make every effort to make sure that each child gets to the bathroom as needed. PLEASE, take your chil-dren to the bathroom on the way to the classroom to eliminate many trips during the preschool time. We realize that accidents oc-casionally happen, but not on a regular basis. If a child has two (2) consecutive accidents at school, the parent

must remain in the school building the next day that the child is in school. If the child has an accident, the parent must change the child. If the child does not have an accident then the parent does not need to be in the building on the following scheduled school day.

If the child has a third accident, and toilet training does continue

orded message on the preschool answering machine will inform callers of our evacuation and the circumstances that made it neces-sary. At minimum, a sign will be posted on the door at Pioneer Church.

LATE PICK-UP POLICY Regular school hours are 9:00-11:30. The 2’s hours are 9-11:25. If a parent is chronically late picking up their child, the following policy will go into effect. If you are more than 5 minutes late you will be fined $10, and you will be fined an additional $10 for each 10 mi-nute increment that passes before you pick up your child. This will be at the discretion of the director, not the teacher. This charge will be billed separately from your tuition statement and must be paid prior to any enrichment sign ups.

ARRIVAL & DISMISSAL Parents/Guardians should walk all students to their classroom in the morning, wait for the teacher to open the door then greet the teacher so that she knows who has brought the student to class each day. Please call the school each day your child will be absent. Prior to release of a child to anyone other than the parent or guard-ian we will require written notification from the parent (no phone calls). A parent may sign a Car Pool Form which gives permission for a child to be driven by someone other than themselves. A phone call is only acceptable to inform the preschool that someone who is listed ON this Car Pool Form will be picking up the child. A picture ID is required from anyone on your carpool form prior to the release of your child, so please let your carpool contacts know that they will be asked for ID. The following are some state recommended policies and practices that we feel will help make the end of the day transition just a little smoother. These are remote possibilities, but your children are im-portant to us and we want to ensure the safety of you and your child.

NATIONAL ALERT If the NTAS issues an imminent alert, Pioneer Preschool will close and remain closed during this Condition Red alert. We will do our best to notify you of this ahead of time. If this condition would happen during our school hours, the follow-ing plan will be put into place.

1. Pioneer Preschool will close. Your children should be picked up at this time. Your child will only be released to you, or someone on your child’s authorized Car Pool List.

2. We will attempt a phone chain, however, you must stay tuned to the world situation and alert levels. Radio station AM 1100 has all the local crisis information.

3. ALL doors to the school will continue to be locked. 4. Pick-up procedures:

Enter ONLY through the parking lot gym doors. Check in with the staff or board member with a photo ID.

At this level of security, even those who are familiar faces to us will have to provide a picture ID.

Please wait at the designated area of the gym. Your child will remain in the classroom with his/her teachers and be brought to you for dismissal.

EVACUATION PLAN If Pioneer Preschool ever becomes unsafe for the children during our operating hours, we will evacuate the building. The Preschool teachers and staff will take all the children in each class to Solon Community Church, located at 33955 Sherbrook Park Drive. They will provide us with a large space, bathrooms, and activities, if nec-essary. We will stay there until it is safe to return to Preschool or until a parent is able to pick up their child at that location. If we are able to do so, we will notify parents by phone and the rec-
